These young Indian women on Instagram rake up views in the millions. What they are posting about on the platform is an assertion of their caste and religious identity. The BBC's Divya Arya and Prem Boominathan travelled to small towns in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra to meet these young Instagram influencers to understand their common motivations but different goals.
After the BBC flagged such content to Meta that owns Instagram, some of it was found violative of their guidelines and taken down (00.08-00.18 and 00.28-00.32). A Meta Spokesperson also issued this statement -
“Our Community Standards prohibit content targeting a person or group of people on the basis of their caste which is a protected characteristic. Any content that threatens or incites violence is also prohibited. We want to foster a positive, diverse community on Instagram and accordingly have removed content that violated our Community Guidelines.”
