Castell Dinas Bran History / Legendary Tales of Knights, Giants & King Arthur
The romantic ruins of Castell Dinas Bran sit high up on a craggy hilltop overlooking the delightful Welsh town of Llangollen. The first structures on the site date back to the iron age but the striking ruins that still stand were built by a prince of Powys in the mid 13th century. Castell Dinas Bran, also known as the “Crow’s Fortress” has a number of intriguing myths and legends attached to it which we will explore.

Thank you. Watching a wonderful but cold and windy castle on a hilltop whilst hopefully not so cold enjoying afternoon tea, sounds a very good idea 😉

Glad you enjoyed it! Although Dinas Bran is very ruinous it is situated in a beautiful rural location, it is quite easy to turn back time in your mind up there or get lost in the folk tales 🙂

Having read through the Dream of Rhonabwy in the Mabinogion, I had reconstructed Arthur's journey to the Battle of Badon. And following the clues as best I could, and with the association in The Dream, and at Castle Dinas Bran with crows/ravens I had believed that this must surely have been the site of the battle itself. Sadly, as Steve Blake and Scott Lloyd point out, in their book 'Arthur The Untold Story' my extrapolation of the clues was incorrect, as they have correctly (in my view) identified the Battle of Badon as having taken place at Breidden Hill near Welshpool. I think the name Dinas Bran could actually have derived as another form of the term 'crows nest', as in on board a sailing ship. As the castle has such stunning and commanding views all around, just like the crows nest aboard a ship. The association with the character of King Bran could well be just like the ancient Greek habit of saying that such-and-such was named after King so-and-so (a river for example). When the King actually takes his name from the place, not the other way round. It's a truly beautiful place, somewhere I'd like to visit one day. Thanks for showing us round!
