Situated in Flintshire, Wales, Ewloe castle is really a rather unique and mysterious castle. There is very little documentary evidence to tell us the castle’s story and its location is most unusual as it does not appear to hold any strategic vantage point, it is located deep within ancient woodland.

This is where I grew up. I grew up camping in the castle, swimming in the Devil's basin, and spending night after night waiting to see the nun. Good Friday was a great time to go there. Local tradition led dozens of families up there on that day for picnics, etc. My mum still lives in the family home on the edge of the forest.

Another castle I have been to ,Twice.First time we parked on the main road and walked across the fields ,not knowing there as a way through the woods I like you first wondered why it was built in the middle of the woods. Though its not the grandest castle u will ever come across ,its a fav. of mine. This was the second castle I visited ,the first being Beeston in Cheshire. I am impressed by the knowledge you have about these castles you visit. Very nice video Thank you .

Thank you 🙂 The ruins are not the most extensive but the setting makes Ewloe one of my favourite castles too. The views at Beeston are fantastic and there is a lot more documented history, I must return there soon and make a video 😉

Thank you for the video. I am a little puzzled that there did not seem to be any fireplaces suggesting this fortress was meant for garrison purposes only. Did you see any remains of fireplaces or kitchen ovens? Best wishes, Veronique.
