Casterbridge: Taking the Mastery and RSD Concept to its Logical Conclusion? Offset Bridge Upgrade

I saw a sponsored advert for this bridge and just had to try it out on my offset guitars! I'm always looking for DIY/affordable alternatives to popular offset guitar parts, such as the Mastery bridge, and thought this looked like an excellent candidate. Sven, the owner of Dietrich Parts, was excited about the idea when I reached out to him and sent me a free sample of the bridge to try out on offset guitars. He's keen to know whether there's any demand amongst other offset players for a purpose-built bridge - as the one I'm using is a Stratocaster model which I modified myself.

This is the sort of innovation that offsets have been needing! If the retail price of a potential offset version of this bridge is less than that of a Staytrem, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

@400_billion_suns

Same. The “plunkiness” of the Fender bridge is a significant part of the unique tonal character of offset guitars. All of the aftermarket bridges that I’ve heard make these guitars sound more generic and boring, IMO. I understand why some people prefer them, but for me, I want all the warts and quirks of the original designs because it’s the only way to get that distinct tonal character. And if you spend a few hours setting up the stock one properly (making sure to get the neck angle right), it works just as well as the 3rd party designs. Anyway, just my opinion based on my own preferences. No offense meant to others with different opinions.

Hey mate! Yeah, so Sven started a run of custom order, hand made versions of the bridge for offsets and was selling them on Reverb. He wanted to gauge how many people were interested enough to buy one before doing a production run. The problem was that because they were custom made, they were a fair bit more expensive and he didn't sell too many. After getting some feedback from people struggling to cut good string slots he decided to shelve the offset version of the bridge. Last time I spoke to him, he still had one 9.5" and one 7.25" offset bridge left - if you hit him up he might still have them! Hey Vulmen, thanks so much! I hope you love your Jag as much as I love mine, it's such a great guitar 😊 I have changed the pickups in mine. The stock ones were really badly microphonic and unusable even at home volumes, unfortunately. I've got a set of Early 60s spec pickups handwound in the UK by Northern Pickups. They're really amazing pickups, they have a lot more clarity than the stock ones and they have a lovely three-dimensionality and a lot of character! The pickguard is from a seller on eBay in the UK called EarlPilanz. I ordered a Classic Vibe pickguard but he actually sent a Classic Player pickguard by mistake - but it fits fine! The colour I went for is pale mint. I think it really complements the guitars finish well 😊

@@Vulmen311 the stock pickups in mine were so bad that they'd even produce microphonic feedback on the clean channel 🤦🏼‍♂️ I really highly recommend checking out Northern Pickups from the UK. There's a comparison video on my channel between the stock pickups the the set I got from Northern: www.northernpickups.co.uk/ Fletcher Pickups from the UK are a little more expensive and I'm not sure if they ship to Europe, but they also make great pickups in my experience. Yeah I can see what you're saying! The Mustang bridge does have that traditional sound but I love the fuller, warmer, sweeter sound of the Casterbridge. Sven did initially start making hand made versions of the Casterbridge for offsets but they were quite expensive. He eventually decided not to go ahead with mass producing an offset version as there's a high risk of user error in cutting the string grooves and the bridge needs a lot of down force from the strings. Yeah, brass definitely does change the high end character. It does roll highs off, but also adds a really nice chimey quality to the upper-mids/highs that's really nice. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Like you say, different strokes for different folks. @@MarkB.Guitar Very interesting to hear what became of the offset attempts of this fine company. I suppose their marketing (reach) was less than needed to get the full attention of the offset community, else it might have really taken off. I can't stand the stock barrel shaped saddles. It's not really the shape that bothers me, it's the threaded screw ends that are right under your palm. I can't understand why Fender hasn't come up with a better design? However I did notice that while you were installing the Casterbridge, that there were two long screws facing the trem, but when you were playing the guitar, they seem to have disappeared, removed or replaced with shorter screws? What's going on there? I would like to know, because I am considering this upgrade for my guitar. One thing that I don't care for too much is that you have to file in the grooves for the strings. I worry that they may rust or oxidize. Thanks.
@MarkB.Guitar
@MarkB.Guitar Год назад
Yeah it's not the most comfortable design having screws sticking out above the saddles. Well spotted - if you're really eagle-eyed, you will have noticed the screws are shorter when I'm cutting the string grooves than when I initially finish the assembly, too (Sven provides 2 different lengths of screw and switched from the longer to the shorter before adding the string grooves). I just cut the screws down, same as shown in the installation montage for the other screws. I did it for 3 reasons: 1. It looks neater only having the screw the length it needs to be and no longer 2. With the screws sticking out like that, the A and B string were making contact with the screws before they reached the bridge. I want to maximise string resonance behind the bridge and this screw-string contact was affecting that. 3. You then don't need such long springs on those screws to hold everything in place. There's no spring on the bass side and a very small spring on the treble side. I just measured how long they needed to be for the intonation to be correct and cut them down to that length - roughly, just eyeballed it. The grooves in the saddle shouldn't corrode any more than a regular unplated brass bridge - e.g. on a traditional telecaster. It might discolour slightly but nothing more. Those Gotoh In Tune Saddles are unplated brass and have been gigged extensively with loads of sweat and beer spilled on them and the tarnishing is very minimal. Having a string in the groove should reduce the contact it gets to moisture as well, I'd have thought. Hope that makes sense! Feel free to come back with any further questions 😊

@@MarkB.Guitar Excellent, thanks so much for the feedback. I love this design and I would put the Casterbridge on every Fender guitar I have or any future Fenders I get. I recently bought a Gibson SG bass guitar and I was wondering if a String Butler would be necessary. Definitely for a 6 string. I'll have to research it. On an unrelated note, I don't care for those "relic-ed" guitars. To me it's like cheating. I'd rather have honest wear and tear than some fake crap. If I buy a vintage guitar, then that's a horse of a different color !!!

@@jameslanclos568 No problem! It's definitely a great design 😊 Awesome, I'd love to try the Casterbridge on a Tele! I'm not sure about String Butlers on bass, but beneficial on guitars for sure. Haha, I think relicing can look cool, but it can also look really bad! Just depends how tastefully it's done imo. Let me know how your Casterbridges work out if you get any!

Looks like a pretty easy mod But I saw there’s hardly space to intonate Did it intonate well? Obviously it’ll never be perfect

Hi David, yeah it intonates really well. I did my best to demo the intonation at 16:53. There's enough room to set it and adjust it as necessary for different string gauges, etc 😊

@@MarkB.Guitar awesome, I reached out to them and they are making custom jazzmaster/Jaguar bridges now Just ordered one I’ll see if he can set my string spacing

@@DavidGarcia-pi9wn Oh nice! I knew he'd decided to put an offset model into production, but I didn't know you could custom order one already! Let me know how it works out for you 😊

so, you need a dremel, to cut the screws, to cut the springs, and file out the holes is you're existing bridge...? I don't get it...Am i the only one..?

🤷🏼‍♂️ horses for courses. I love tinkering and modding and finding affordable alternatives to expensive things, so it works for me. A model designed specifically for offsets would obviously fit without any of those mods required.

I don’t get these designs, including the mastery, that combine saddles, it seriously effects the ability to downtune or use a wounded G

I appreciate the issue with a Wound G. I personally wouldn't ever use a Wound G, so that wouldn't be an issue for me. I think with the majority of the 3 saddle designs, like a Halon or a KMS bridge, you can reverse the middle saddle for Wound G strings... I appreciate a design like this isn't for everyone but I'm still loving this for my uses 😊
