Miami Vice Series Finally: At OCB, Castillo calls Switek into his office and asks him if he knew anything about the hit, expressing concern about his gambling habit making him vulnerable (and the fact that he didn't ask Switek about it previously). Switek is adamant he would never give up his partners or any info about Borbon's whereabouts, but Castillo suspends him indefinitely pending further investigation, to avoid any possibility of more leaks.
From Miami Vice Season 5 Episode 17 “Freefall”: Crockett and Tubbs, figuring they're on their way out, are recruited by the government to help a dictator escape from his war-torn country - with double-crosses at every turn.

After Switek's partner was killed he really was never the same again...his gambling was just out of control, but he never sold anyone out despite what the bookies wanted from him. Man what a show! Great video...Miami Vice Forever.....

Let me tell you about my day so far. Coffee in Paris, surfed the Maldives, took a little nap on Kilimanjaro. Oh, yeah, I got digits from this Polish chick in Rio. And then I jumped back for the final quarter of the N.B.A. finals - courtside of course. And all that was before lunch. I could go on, but all I'm saying is, I'm standing on top of the world.

After seeing the earlier seasons, the lighting for this seems so... un-Miami Vice, its weird to see. I will say this though, I dont think Castillo truly believed Switek was guilty, but he had to see him in the same way their enemies would. If anything, suspending him kept him safe. It was his judgement call.
@captainpharaoh
@captainpharaoh 2 года назад
Agreed. In the back of his mind, Caastillo knew Switek was clean. He had to consider the safety of the rest of his unit. Plus I'm sure he wanted the investigators to see for themselves what he knew was true.

Although it wasn't revealed with what happened to Switek, He probably got an extended suspension without pay or he quit the force and start a new life. (Maybe becoming a private eye or a sheriff in a small town.)

In German TV, as I mentioned before, all episodes were cut to 42,5 minutes due to the old programme schedule without any commercial breaks. We - in Germany - never saw the revenge of Switek. He was suspended, left Castillo´s office and the rest of this sequence was cut out to reach 42,5 minutes in the second part of "Freefall". "Freefall" (in Germany translated as "Last mission" or so to say "Last task" or "duty") was aired in two parts as the final episodes.

this was the only time I hated Lieutenant Castillo in the entire series! It's okay that he knew that Switek was going through a gambling addiction problem and he knows that Zito's death mainly contributed to that, so why didn't he reached out to help Switek? This last episode left me a bad impression of the behavior of the lieutenant who was always lucid in the steps he took inside the OCB with his team, but anyway, this season 5 was really incoherent...🤷🏻
@luckyj.ferguson6308
@luckyj.ferguson6308 2 года назад
That's the way it was back then, it's still like that with a lot of guys today. Men never want to interfere with other men's lives especially when it comes to personal problems, it's considered to be forbidden and best left alone. Now from a professional standpoint Switek should have been removed from undercover work and any sensitive information long ago once his gambling habits came to light, to protect the team as well as its reputation. A shady lawyer in a future court battle could spin the weakness in their client's favour to achieve exoneration.

The final scenes several times reference the classic Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which ends with the two heroes running into overwhelming gunfire, presumably to die. The resemblance is especially strong as for the only time Crockett is shooting with guns in both hands, like the Sundance Kid, and particularly given Don Johnson's increasing resemblance during this period to Robert Redford, who played the Sundance Kid. It is also noteworthy that the film's musical style was clearly referenced in a previous fifth season episode "Jack of All Trades". Here, a riff reminiscent of the film's Bolivian robbery scenes was employed with music from the "Swingle Singers".

But, when you think about it, Switek became a tragic character after Zito died whose addictions (i.e. alcoholism and gambling) made him into a liability. And while it's never revealed what happened to him after he got his revenge on Montoya, some fans speculate that Switek quit the force and his life went downhill from there, which is cemented further when he hides his face in the shadows when he confronts Montoya and his goons.

Switek was suspended by the lieutenant. He was suspended of his police duties. Switek then shoots and kills three people. As a cop he would be put on paid administrative leave. This action has resulted in a whole lot of trouble for Switek.

What's even interesting is that Freefall ended up having some scenes from Too Much Too Late. Thing was that originally, that episode featured a subplot regarding Switek's gambling, but when NBC chose not to show the episode due to the main plot featuring a rather graphic subject at the time, they decided to edit those subplot scenes into Freefall which implicated how Cesar Montoya was able to manipulate Switek.
@figment1988
@figment1988 2 года назад
@Stefano Pavone that is very true. Canonically, this serves as the missing puzzle piece to some things such as Tubbs feeling the similar feelings of burnout Crockett has, and with his relationship with Valerie down the toilet for good, it gives him the drive to fall in love again, but like Crockett with Caitlyn, Tubbs' drive falls apart when Felicia is killed in Costa Morada, which adds the remaining catalyst that leads to him quitting the force.
