In this video I recycle aluminum profiles melting them into ingots that will be used in my future projects as a pure source of aluminum.

Grazie

I have three questions. What are you using as the mix for the walls of the furnace? Also, what flux did you put on top? I used Mr. (Grant) Thompson's mix but I've heard that cracks easily. (I'm not trying to be rude here) Is there any reason why some of the pours were sloppier than others? Anyways, awesome video! I put the ingots into muffin tins as well!
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 8 лет назад
Hi! The furnace is made of refractory cement and sand mixed approximately 1:1 . After a year it is starting to crack a bit, if the damage will get worst I will fill those crack with more cement I guess :) I don't know about the king of random mix because I never tried! As flux I am using lite salt (a mix of Potasium Cloride and Sodium Cloride) and as degassing agent when I cast stuff I use baking soda (sodium carbonate) that I both buy at the mall for really cheap and they works great for me. Some of the pours went a bit uncontrolled because the crucible was really full and so really heavy too xD No other particular reason! :) Thank you!
@aaronwest2511
@aaronwest2511 8 лет назад
Thanks for replying in timely manner :). Grant Thompson's mix was plaster of paris and sand of a 1:1 ratio (I'm pretty sure).
@BlackBeardProjects

Well I guess refractory cement would hold better against heat xD But I don't really know since I never tried ;)

Aaron West grant Thompsons furnace was for small project beginners that don't want to spend too much money. he said it in another video that there is stuff that will last longer and insulate better but it will cost a lot more

i dont respect fire and molten metal enough to star a project like this. i might burn my house to the ground. Nut it is amazing to watch! You are great at this. and you won a subscriber today :D

Man, your furnace has a really thick lining! You could probably get away with decreasing it by an inch or more.

i found when using my "steel" muffin pan, the ingots got stuck as there is a thin layer of aluminum ... did this ever happend to you?
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 лет назад
Well, with my pan they always get a bit stuck, but a quick tap with something from behind always frees them :D Maybe there is still a layer of anti-adhesive stuff? I really don't know :(

I've searched, but I don't see a video of you making your melting kiln. Am I missing it? Is it just a half barrel with refractory concrete and a hole for the air source? How do you clean out the ash? Thanks for the videos, they are great.
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 6 лет назад
Hi there! Yeah that project was made before I was recording myself :) I have a couple of building process photo on my social pages, but that's how it works :) I take out the ash every time I use it with a spoonlike tool.. nothing fancy!

hey awesome video men :D and one question, can your foundry melt brass or steel ?
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 лет назад
I could melt brass or other copper metals with this foundry if I had a proper graphite crucible, my steel one can't stand that temperature for long :) Steel is very hard to melt at home, too high melting point :) Thank you bro

What was the powder you put in the aluminium while it was melting?
@BlackBeardProjects

I use 2 powder! As flux: lite salt (a mix of Potasium Cloride and Sodium Cloride). As degassing agent: baking soda (sodium carbonate). I degass the aluminum only when I cast stuff. I buy them both at the mall for really cheap and they works great for me!

Is aluminum toxic to melt? Asking because of the mask and if I should wear one.
@DBADruid
@DBADruid 3 года назад
No Aluminium it is not toxic, however is always recommended to use a mask due to fumes. like unwanted reaction due contamination, like oil, other metals that may cause a random reaction. Long exposure to metal fumes can be toxic indeed, for a small hobby low working hours in metal foundry generally speaking is fine. Always use mask better to be safe than sorry.

Why do you add drossing flux to it
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 8 лет назад
It helps to aggregate all the little impurities inside the aluminum and it makes them float to the top :) In some of my video you can really see how much black stuff It forms to the top when I mix in the flux!
@mattm6178
@mattm6178 6 лет назад
Not correct. Pointless and ignorant. The black "stuff" your referring to is the flux.... and any Aluminum that Oxidizes would already float due to its lack of mass and density, oh and the fact it melts at over the melting point of copper. I've been casting for quite some time, tried it all each with different variables ALL when under same conditions come out exact same.

the metal needs to bee pored properly, there is so much waste
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 8 лет назад
Waste? I've remelted the bits already :D These pour where a bit uncontrolled due to the weight of the crucible being so full. When I cast parts there is always less aluminum and it's much easier to get a clean pour :)

Black Beard Projects Do you have any tips for what i could use when I'm casting brass and dont want the zink to boil off and burn? something so that the oxygen wont come in contact with the melt.
@GodsP3rfectId10t
@GodsP3rfectId10t 7 лет назад
+Toffladum I you don't want oxygen to come into contact with the metal when you are pouring it I have seen a few videos where they light a propane flame above the mold, which also helps to heat the mold preventing thermal shock.

You: "As flux I use lite salt (a mix of Potasium Cloride and Sodium Cloride). As degassing agent I use baking soda (sodium carbonate)." Sorry, but what do you mean with flux (some sort of catalyser?) and degassing (cleaning/purifing process?)
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 лет назад
The flux helps to aggregate all the impurities in the molten aluminum and the degassing release all the gases that gets trapped during the melting process :)
