Casting Aluminum Wheels | Old Timey Casters

I thought I’d try my hand at casting some old timey wheels in aluminum. These were originally intended for a cart that would carry my foundry furnace (they still might eventually be used for this).
They are extra wide for transporting something ultra heavy across the lawn where thinner wheels would just press into the soil. To cast thinner wheels, I'll simply use half of the pattern.
For those of you who will ask why sodium silicate and not petrobond!
I decided to use sodium silicate sand primarily for the texture it leaves, but also because I had minimal draft on the pattern (~5 degrees). Also, sodium silicate sand is much more forgiving for such deep details.

You can powder the talcum very well using a wide flour sifter. I have a 9 piece set and usually i follow the rule that 'the sifter size should be matching a least one of the lengths of the mold'. Gives a perfect powdery surface from 3 knocks or so.

Brian Oltrogge after using silicate sand what do u think is much better silicate sand or petrobond sand quality wise ?
@ajistewart
@ajistewart 7 лет назад
watching some of Brian's videos, the petrobond sand is much, much more higher resolution compared to the sodium silicate sand, this time he went for the SS sand because of the rougher texture it gives. It can also be a bit harder to work with unless you have a bottle of CO2 at the ready with a funnel so you can cure the sand. When i come time to doing casting, i will be trying to use Petrobond as it gives a much nicer finish, and i don't require CO2 to set it. Petrobond can generally be also reused. there are a few videos on youtube that show people who have made petrobond mixers as it requires oil and something else (can't remember off the top of my head) hence the "petro" at the front of it. it clumps together a bit like clay, but doesn't have the moisture as when hot metals hit moisture, they can cause explosions :). Hope this helps
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 7 лет назад
Petrobond hands down. It will recreate your finger print if you leave it in the mold. Sodium silicate is easier to deal with if you don't care about surface finish and have a difficult pattern.
@waynoswaynos
@waynoswaynos 7 лет назад
Can either of these sands be reused to make another casting form or are they single use only?
@pneumatic00
@pneumatic00 6 лет назад
Man, you really did a fine job on those. I like the funnel with CO2 fed in used to flash cure the sand. Even the master forms are attractive.
@charles1379

great work and very entertaining. I note that you use a funnel shaped pouring basin. the current thinking is that these pouring basins entrap air and oxide into the melt and induce turbulence into the flow. There are basin designs simply built that includes a weir that allow a better pour as described in the "OldFoundryman" videos in accordance with James Campbell , I believe. they also have narrow sprue's so that they are completely full when pouring. please look into them, they have some merit. but them if it works, it works.

I need to work on Rhino! You make it look so easy! >>> Apologies if I missed it somewhere, but have you figured out how hot your furnace gets? I'd like to melt down silver which is doable at about 1700ºF. Aluminum melts about 500º before that. Think your burner / furnace can do 500º more?? >>> I once drew up plans for a heavy butcher block island that called for wheels like this. Commercial stainless steel castors were a couple hundred bucks(!) if I recall correctly. I'll be interested to see the final application and how you machine the hub and fit bearings!

I would have used poplar perfect plank as it is more stable. You can cut the whole thing without the need for sanding afterwards. Just cut from the top of the radius created from the ball cutter to the parting line with a flat endmill and it's done. To keep it from flying away when it cuts free,,,,, oh never mind. I have been a pattern maker for 30 years. What you did is fine. They look great.
@Chrisworkshop
@Chrisworkshop 7 лет назад
Very nice work. Congratulations. But I have A question. Why not to use green sand which is reusable. Sodium silicate sand is lost, so it is an expensive solution to make a mold. For my part, I only make a sodium silicate mold when the part has details that can't be made with green sand, like the fins of an air refreshed cylinder head by exemple.

Fantastic work as I've come to expect. I can't help but wonder why you didn't simply install the indexing pins before sanding it to final shape instead of gluing?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 7 лет назад
+brocktechnology Long answer: I loaned my CNC to the school where I teach. It is in a wood shop with set hours. I intended to completely cut this out but the shop was closing. Without the CNCed edge to reference, there in no way to locate the pins. Even if I could have installed pins, I would have just used less glue as trying to hold it together while sanding would not have been ideal.

What do you use as a degasser? I tried using chlorine via plunging powdered pool-shock, but it still left my castings more porous than I would have liked. Perhaps I just didn't use enough? Regardless, all of your projects always end up looking extremely professional, on what seems like the first try.
