I am on a mission to take my dice production game to the next level with some perfectly clear dice sets. This is part 1 of two for the process to make that happen, check out the other video in the near future!
So as I said in the video, the pressure pot doesn't completely remove bubbles, but instead makes them invisibly small so that we don't have to worry about them. The part 2 video will focus on creating better molds using a vacuum chamber, but for now, let's focus on the pressure pot.
It's a super simple setup, the air pump is a bit loud, so I recommend doing it when your neighbors aren't home if you have close neighbors like I do.
The results from the pot are fantastic, and I love just how clear it makes the dice. This is what I need to make proper 2 tone or 2 color dice in future videos.
List of Parts:
Big things:
1 Harbor Freight Pressure Pot (Got mine 20% off for 80 bucks.)
1 Air pump (Also got mine on sale.)
Small Things:
Kobalt 12 pc air pump starter kit.
3/8 inch to 1/4 inch reducer. (if that doesn't work, try 1/2 to 1/4)
1/4 inch ball valve
1/4 inch male connector for your air hose.
loctite sealer - (alternatively you could use thread sealing tape, but it just didn't work for me.) Here is a link to the stuff - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...

The "reducer" he mentioned and labeled as "3/8 inch to 1/4th inch reducer" in the description is called a "reducing coupling" in case anyone else had trouble finding one like I did. That's what it was labeled at Lowes.

for those who may see this comment and are trying to make your own pressure pot for resin casting, it is possible to set up the pressure pot in more than one way. there is a little bit a flexibly you can take when setting things up. One important factor I learned is that you don't need to use the three way pressure gauge setup like he uses. In fact Rybonator caps off one end because it isn't needed. All you really need is a T joint, or in other words a connector with 2 connections and a third one connecting to your pot. One side of the T joint will have your ball valve and connector for the air hose, and the other will have the pressure gauge attached. you can choose to use the elbow joint if you wish to connect the safety valve like rybonator does here but in reality you can attach the safety valve directly to the pressure pot.

used your instructions to build my own pot. works well. did have to use some vaseline on the seal, but worked well. I did replace the bolts to lock them down with M10-1.5 x 40mm Socket Head Cap Screws. the reason is because the intake valve would interfere with the wing nuts turning. gave me more room. the replacement screws needed M8 Allen wrench to tighten it even more. works well. no leak from the lid anymore.

hey man you helped me out a lot with your videos and with how you respond to questions. I had the exact same spiky bubbles in my silicone and I didn't have enough money to buy a vacuum chamber after assembling a pressure pot so I tried mixing the silicone and painting it onto the numbers of my dice and pouring the rest into the cup with the dice to make sure my it filled the numbers perfectly and then I put it all in the pressure pot to cure. After the silicone was done curing I took it out and I had perfect molds since then I get super shiny and amazing dice every time no vacuum needed. I use the exact silicone and resin you use at 40-42 psi
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 5 лет назад
So just so that I am clear, you paint your dice with the silicone first, then cover then with the silicone like normal? Do you let the painted layer dry first, or paint and then immediately cover? Thanks for the tip! I will have to give that a go and compare the 2 results. If that works just as well, you are a genius my friend! :)

Thanks for the video Rybonator, you're really going for my wallet. Knowing harbor freight they probably use different parts for some of their stuff, but I just wanted to let everyone know the exact part numbers that worked for me from Lowes. 3/8 to 1/4 reducer - 877214 1/4 ball valve - 369194 1/4 male connector for air hose - 15306 (but your air compressor starter kit may include this piece, mine did.) and then for the part that you cap I used a 1/4" FPT Cap - 877194 I also decided to try a different thread sealer instead of the loctite because it is so dang expensive, I will edit in a couple days to let everyone know how well it worked. I used Blue Monster sealant which is about 1/5 of the price of loctite. (make sure you get the one rated for metal, they sell a plastic only option) - 829881

I went to my local Harbor Freight to find the pressure pot, and the guy there said they didn't sell anything like that! lol So, I went to one from Amazon, but couldn't find a CP branded pot. I got one that was branded Aeropro and was a similar style. It just got here, and I was excited to start the build. However, they must have listened to your difficulties with teflon tape, because they used the red permanent loctite sealer on every. single. joint. Hey, at least I got a heat gun for a different project -- it should soften the loctite enough I can disassemble the parts. On another note, I've really enjoyed your videos. Hey I was just wondering, when adding the cap and the ball valve with the male air hose connector to the gauge piece does it matter which side I put them on? For some reason neither a 1/4 cap or a 3/8 cap will fit on the right side of my gauge, and a 3/8 cap on fits on the left leaving me to have to put the ball valve and male air hose piece on the right. Will this affect the pressure or the ability of the pot to function? Thanks

I have a question, though, because we're struggling--we are using the same methods as you and the same resin, however our dice keep coming out super tacky and not fully hardened. Do we need to leave them in longer than 24-hours? Could it be that we vacuum the resin in addition to pressurizing it be an issue? We cast in our basement and have a dehumidifier, but could the temperature or humidity be an issue? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 года назад
Hi Ubergeek and Ubergeek's Husband! Thanks for watching my stuff :) It makes me happy to think that there is a family who follows along with me. So it could be a number of issues, but let's try and tackle them. First, I don't think it's using a vacuum and pressurizing. You can probably skip the vacuum step for the sake of it not being SUPER necessary, but hey, it will ENSURE you have crystal resin, so I get it. I leave mine in the pot for the entire demolding time. If that's with Art N Glow resin, then it's 24 hours. BUT you can leave it for longer if you are getting gooey dice. My initial thought is that it's in your basement. Humidity can effect it, but it sounds like you have that covered, but temperature is a huge factor. You really should try and cure your resin somewhere between 68F - 80F. Any lower and it will inhibit curing time. Also make sure you are mixing by Volume and not Weight for Art N Glow. The other thing, is sometimes you just get a bad batch of resin. If you are doing all of these things, and still having trouble, then get another small set sometime and try it out and see if you get better results. I really hope this helps! Best of luck :)

I did the pressure pot conversion and got a compressor, but for some reason it won't go up to 40 PSI In the pot. I did the Loctite but when I opened the valve it went to 3 and declined in pressure when I closed it.

I am in search of advice and I hope someone who might see this can help me. I arranged my pressure pot basically the same as Rybonator's video. I had to tinker with it several times because of loose or unsealed connections. I have used soapy water to find those areas that are leaking and can no longer find an area that bubbles when I spray it. I still consistently drop from the 40 or above pressure that I put in down to around 36. This happens every time. Once the pressure hits around 36 it holds and has for as much as 24 hours. So my question is is that drop ok, will that drop cause me problems in the future. If I were to add pressure later after the drop would that cause problems (I imagine it would). I'm more interested in ways I can run with the system as is than trying to take everything apart (again). But, any advice would be very helpful

thank u so much for the video!!! just a quick question, i've noticed that when i make dice i have issues with the molds not filling all the way with resin... is that a problem with my filling (i also use pipettes) or would a pressure pot help with this? thank you! :)

Rybonator That’s good to hear. I’ve tried looking up the physics of bubble size and pressure but there’s too many complicating factors with viscosity and surface tension etc. I’m surprised 20psi does the trick as you’d expect it to only crush the bubbles to a little under half their original size. I’ll try it out sometime when I can!

Only downside to locktite is if you ever need to remove or replace a valve or gauge it makes hard to remove with tools. There is also different types, blue is removable with hand tools and red needs a torch. (I think I’ve got the colors right; might be reversed) If the threaded part is broken off it’s near impossible without special tools and a lot of swearing... PTFE sealant is what you really need for sealing if the Teflon tape isn’t doing the job. Your method is fine if you never have to swap any faulty parts.
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 года назад
^ I had heard of better ways to go about this after making it, but my lack of experience told me to go for the ultimate seal so that I didn't have to worry about it. I would probably try PTFE in the future :)

I'm also just getting started with dice, but from other work I can say that these pots should be perfectly safe to work with, as long as you keep the safety valve. Mine automatically vents if the pressure gets above about 35, and the tank itself should handle quite a bit more than that before there's any risk of shrapnel.

We just did this setup tonight and our pot is struggling to make it up to 40 PSI. It gets to around 32 and then stays there and it takes it about 10 mins to reach just that. We have just Teflon tape on it right now.. do you think it’s just not sealing good enough to reach full psi? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks!🤗
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 года назад
I wouldn't say that is the case. If it wasn't sealing good, you would see your PSI start to fall at some point. Check your safety valve. If you hear a hissing coming from there, then it probably means that you have a safety valve rated for 30PSI instead of 40+ :)

I've been wondering if it would be possible to setup it up as it's originally meant to be except with the modifications of capping the paint outlet, the air outlet, and adding the ball valve? Am I missing why that wouldn't work. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey there Rybonator I was just wondering: Could you bypass the pressurised tank by simply adding the molds with the uncured resign still inside them , inside the vacuum tank? In that way wouldn't the resin be completely sucked into the mold while all the air bubbles being extracted ? thanks for these videos :) Labros
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 5 лет назад
Hi Labros, So if you were to get rid of one of the 2 machines, pressure pot and vacuum chamber, get rid of the vacuum chamber. The pressure pot can cure the silicone without bubbles (I am told), but you cannot remove bubbles from resin with the vacuum chamber. You technically CAN, but it takes far too long, and the resin would begin curing, AND more importantly, it would spill out of the mold, leaving you with not enough resin in the actual dice mold. So with that in mind, you could nix the vacuum chamber, but would still need the pot. Hope that helps!

Question as i am waiting to get into dice making myself. After watching both parts and seeing later videos. Is the vacuum chamber really even needed. You use the pressure pot in later videos in the mold making process and if that gives good results as seen with no spike bits then it would make sense that the problem was the old molds before either pressure or vacuums were used. Not trying to sound rude. Just trying to understand.
