Juliet Taylor, Ellen Lewis, Patricia DiCerto, Laura Rosenthal and Jennifer Euston reveal secrets of their craft and why women rule their industry. THR senior editor Stacy Wilson asks the roundtable guests how they felt after hearing former DGA president Taylor Hackford say in Casting By: "Casting directors don't direct anything," and therefore don't deserve to be recognized with their own Oscar.

Yes, she's my favorite! She's so likeable and easy to talk to so it helps people open up and tell good stories. Stephen Galloway, her colleague or boss (i'm not sure), is the worst. He is so cold, so the energy in the room is always awkward during his roundtables. Also, sometimes he asks questions in a condescending or rude way. Stacey needs to do all of the roundtables! Love her :)

Very interesting Roundtable. I appreciate the section where you all speak of the strengths you have as women and what those bring to your success in doing your job. I see this is 2013, maybe that kind of talk would be more difficult today (everyone on social media is looking for someone to burn for whatever reason they can.) and it's just true. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. I just moved to LA and while I'm primarily writing, I hope to run into some of y'all someday for future opportunities.

Unfortunately though, you can't really talk about diversity at the casting director level. You have to start at the writer and director. If a part is written specifically for... Because that writer's experience is so linear, then the CD's can only fill that order. They aren't going to shit on their money either and throw them under the bus. I def want to see them grill the writers/directors more on opening up their world.

Very helpful to understand that the casting directors are under this budget pressure for high profiles to help the movie on a creative and budget worthy level so it pays back. I met Juliet Taylor decades ago, she was very kind. This was before my BA, before Strasberg, before I did anything. Looking back I feel like a total idiot about that day, handing her a video of some school play I did, which she probably never watched and I hope she doesn't lol Before you contact a casting agent, get some training, some local experience, read, write, learn. We live, we learn and if we stick with it, we make lemonade

How is it still a thing that gay men/women cannot play the romantic lead, and actors hesitate in being cast as gay characters?!? They are ACTORS. No one bats a lash when they play a murderer, or a saint... It's their job, it does not say ANYTHING about who they are in real life. Baffled.

@emspechk

it's not about who they are in real life. It's about the requirements of the role in 'fake life'/ the movie. Murderers don't actually kill anyone in movies (no one actually dies). Gay roles, require you to be gay, especially if it's specified that you're gay in the role. That means being intimate with the same sex. Some people arent comfortable making out or simulating sex with the same sex. The difference is what you have to do on the set, not how people see you outside.

Internships are for children of wealthy people, it excludes poor and working class people. That's the point. It fast tracks the kids whose parents can subsidize them so it keeps the jobs in the elite families. Besides, unpaid work is slavery which is illegal.
@nomadpurple6154
@nomadpurple6154 2 года назад
The condescending comment on this point by the older woman "we are a select group" made me want to vomit slightly. If all casting agents come from similar backgrounds then it's likely they will share similar unconcious biases for who fits which type of role. A director can only choose from those people put in front of them. Unpaid internships clearly mean that the best people for the job may be excluded from ever applying.

These bitches act like there job is so important. Most of the great directors work exclusively with the actors they want and love not ones that casting directors love. Casting and producers work together to maximize profits by casting some flavor of the week. They do more harm than good in most of the situations.

So, "white" people have no race? Every race on this planet, regardless of the color of their skin, has experienced prejudice (Irish, Slavic, Polish, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, etc...), so we ALL have, not only the right to promote diversity in art, but the responsibility to do so. It's great that the interviewer brought it up.
