For its 50th anniversary the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D.C., commissioned a statue of President John F. Kennedy, one that would reflect the humanity of a leader beloved and mourned by so many. Correspondent Chip Reid talks with sculptor Ivan Schwartz about capturing the 35th president in his team of artists' memorial to JFK.

This is genuine art, heartwarming and moving! What a talented group, EIS! A sculpture that captures the very essence of the subject, more so than the giant bust indoors. Truly, a worthy addition to the Kennedy Center. Caroline and the rest of the family should be proud. I think President Kennedy would have enjoyed it; he probably would have made jokes about it.

A funny little quirk of JFK is what they say about his button - you’re only meant to do the top button up on a suit, but in all his pictures he does both to hide his back brace. It’s so cool they immortalised that minute feature, also gives the man humanity - that he suffered like everyone else.

Went on a White House tour 8 years ago. Last stop is hallway with big JFK portrait - classic one with his arms folded & he is looking down. I stood there taking a photo & overheard 2 American young college age women stand near me asking the other who was the portrait of. Neither knew. So scary when history is not taught, when schools & parents & grandparents don't do their jobs in educating the next generation.

I have a special affinity for John F. Kennedy. He was inaugurated just two weeks before I was born, so I guess I could say my life began with his administration. Obviously, I was too young to personally remember him, but as a lifelong student of history I feel I've come to feel I know him personally enough to still feel a deep sense of disappointment over what could have been.

Oh, look, from his ancestors, JFK got hands the shape of Sigmund Freud's lute/cello/classical guitar hands. I don't recall what my grandpapa's hands looked like. But my mother took one look at MY hands when I was little and made me study the cello. My dad carries the lute hands and many of his German lutenist friends, with Sigmund-esque faces, not only, carry lute hands but express them also. My dad expresses FDR/piano hands, much longer and more elegant. I express my dad's long, elegant limbs...until the wrists and ankles, and "click", there are the pudgy, strong, lute-playing hands and sturdy, d-width feet, at the end of each long, elegant, FDR and Henry James limb. You can see limbs like that on Gregory Hines, for example. (Grandpapa had the long limbs, also. Even into his seventies, when he went to the swimming pool at the Racquet Club, in his red plaid knee length swimming trunks, his chest and body were the same as JFK's in the PT 109 photos... and Grandpapa KNEW it. I wouldn't say he ever strutted. He just walked slowly, in a dignified manner, along the poolside, with his pre-teen granddaughter at his side, until we came to our pool chairs.... At the pool as at the press club and the capitol, he introduced me to everyone as "This is my granddaughter, Mark's daughter. Doesn't she look like me?" And I did look like him, especially like his photos from when he had been my age. Grandpapa had spent his teen-aged college summers of 1916 and 1919 in Worcester, MA, with his parents, and likely had a summer job, like the character Johnny in the movie Dirty Dancing, only it had all taken place some 45 years earlier in real life than in that movie.) It was an ahah moment to eat dinner in Germany a few years ago with a group of bearded Freud lookalikes who all played the lute....and had Sigmund Freud hands as well as faces. So that's where the pudgy, strong hands come from.... Sigmund Freud!

I think JFK is the last idolized democratic president. LBJ accomplished more but is less thought of because of Vietnam. Carter was a man of morals and principle which just didn't work in Washington D.C. (a place where there are none). Clinton blew what little legacy he had on an affair in office. Obama is about as good as a modern day president you will ever find and is well thought of but no monuments have been built to him yet. I think all of this is so because democrats tend not to idolize leaders. They only care about what you can get done in office. Republicans on the other hand are all idolizers. They named everything they could after Reagan. They treat Trump like he is the golden calf. They want to build a shrine to every leader they have. Put them up on a pedestal. They are now a cult in the form of a gang.

I think it’s good to pull some of those old statues down. People get too attached to figures from the past. We have to dig into everything in someone’s life to make sure they are worthy of being memorialized for generations to come. So taking down statues of evil men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.. and putting statues and monuments of George Floyd in their place is 100% the right thing to do. Because after all, we want young people to look to memorialized men like George Floyd and the things they did in their life and mold themselves after the qualities men like him represent.. It’s all truly starting to make sense. #2022America
