Recycling the dust and marble rubble from her art studio, sculptor Jyl Bonaguro shows how she makes a colorful faux marble resin casting or cold cast marble with dust, aggregate, resin, and pigment for a raw lapis lazuli stone effect. Crushing marble, permanent silicone mold making, and marble casting along with concrete and marble base casting are demonstrated in this Start to Finish on how to cast marble using her studio waste rubble. In recreating her studio as a zero waste art studio, Jyl Bonaguro is now able to recycle all her
marble waste into cast bases and cast marble sculptures.

Jyl Bonaguro, a contemporary sculptor, is demonstrating how to carve marble with traditional tools such as the tooth chisel, the point chisel, flat chisel, engraving knives and diamond rasps as she completes the small scale version of her Modern Athena sculpture.
"Over twenty years ago, I dreamed of carving a female figure of major stature - a Modern Athena on the scale of Michelangelo’s David out of a single block of marble. It seemed an impossible dream. However, in 2014, a friend offered me some blocks of marble and I began teaching myself how to carve stone. In the ensuing years, I have exhibited and sold works nationally and internationally, along with completing residencies in Italy and Greece. I am currently carving a small scale version and releasing weekly progress videos on social media. The Modern Athena sculpture is about breaking limitations, for myself and anyone." - Jyl Bonaguro

Let's go zero waste by using more material, electricity and create more waste. Great idea!!

You are so very welcome. I feel with all the technological advances a lot of these older techniques will no longer be used, so it's important to me to document them. Enjoy!

A nice thing to do with the marble waste. 👍 I think the mould the guy made wasn’t well executed, I’ve no idea why he thought he needed 6 parts , totally not necessary with silicone. You should’ve used fibreglass for the jacket , it’s lighter and more durable over time. Just laminate straight over the silicone applying a gel coat first. The joins could’ve been formed when applying the silicone , not cut with a knife afterwards, this might be suitable in other applications, but not this. The amount of flash lines you had to clean was a nightmare. I think the guy was probably more used to making plaster piece moulds.

I agree the amount of flash lines was intense and the plaster is heavy vs fiberglass for the outside! Thank you for your feedback, I will pass it along.

I was wondering if it were possible to cast marble and other stones into dice, and here you are giving me a tutorial, and while I’m pretty sure the mixture you made is too thick to cast as dice, I’m pet sure it can be modified. Thank.

You should never be working with marble dust without a fine particle mask, this is scaring me. Your lungs are delicate. Don't expose them to marble dust and get miner's lung disease. You think you are invincible when young. Take heed and protect the only set of lungs you have! Reusing marble scraps is an excellent idea! This is just what I needed to see to repair a marble inlay table. Love the blue color just like lapis. I need the same color. I would love to know what pigment shade you used and brand. I had a house fire and lost all my art. I was able to save this little table with a marble top inlaid with lapis, carnelian, malachite, black onyx, and coral. I want to recreate a stone like paste to press back into the lost inlays. This lapis looks realistic, very pretty! When making your next 'lapis' sculpture, consider getting mica flakes to add to the final coating. Also some pure mica dust, maybe larger dust particles. When polishing it, the mica will look like the real pyrite in the lapis giving a very realistic lapis effect. fyi - the background music was very distracting. Best not to have music when talking.

That beautiful lady needs some gold leaf vanes running down her body. I was wandering why blue and not white? But now I know Lapis lazuli. Stunning.

Hey look, that's the way the ancient Greeks did it. Except they used wax not rubber. Nope, not at all how the Greeks did it. They covered a body with wax then cut it away. Then filled the mold with marble dust which gets harder and harder

Yes, but the base will be recast. I might use a clear resin next time and color it purple instead like amethyst.
