From clay modeling to carving a marble sculpture using traditional tools like hammer and chisel... Jyl Bonaguro, a contemporary marble sculptor demonstrates the Start to Finish stone carving process of carving a modern female figure goddess sculpture in Italian statuario marble using footage from Italy, Greece and her studio in Chicago.
These are the beginnings of Modern Athena: Herstory. "Over twenty years ago, I dreamt of carving a female figure - a Modern Athena at the scale of Michelangelo’s David out of a single block of marble. It seemed impossible. However, in 2014, a friend offered me some blocks of marble and I began teaching myself how to carve stone. The Modern Athena sculpture is about not accepting prior limitations, not just for myself, but for everyone." - Jyl Bonaguro
Please consider a donation to help me fulfill my dream to carve the 17 foot tall Modern Athena :) jylbonaguro.co...

@Jyl~ I'm deeply inspired and in awe of your undaunted pursuit, to accomplish your dream of hand carving a Modern Athena in marble! Watching you chip away the stone, bit by bit, was absolutely mesmerizing! The inverted rose in her hair is exquisite, as are the hand painted feather details. Your Modern Athena is a GLORIOUS FEAT OF BEAUTY.... but she's also a testament to your artistic courage, skill, patience, and strength Jyl!! I can only imagine how your hands and wrists must've ached, especially during the initial stages of "carving away" the marble stone! I bow to you and your wondrous sculpture! ~~Christy~~

Christy, thank you for all your wonderful compliments and insight into my process. I truly appreciate it! I wear braces so the aches are few but it is a very tiring process to block at the beginning carving stages. A lot of thought and time went into this video and your words make me realize it was worth it. Best wishes and thanks

You can see that footage in my video LIFTED ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KN8qm7hSJwg.html the packing of the crate was not filmed and it was sent via boat to America

What is the easiest way to get started?
@JylBonaguro

Depends on where you are in the world, but if in USA you can order some alabaster from Blick Art supplies and start with a soft stone like alabaster.

How long did the whole process from buying the stone to getting the finished product to it's location as well as everything in between take?
@JylBonaguro

Well, years because I could not work on just this project but in a normal timeline it would take 1 year or less.

You have skills, but speaking as a working sculptor for thirty plus years, you need to study proper anatomy and forms, especially of the head and face. Your school training must have been lacking in fundamental principles, but this is sadly not uncommon. I feel the need to say this because I don't think that you are hearing proper constructive criticism and it's stifling your growth as an artist. No hate or shade. My father worked in marble and I know how challenging it is. The positive comments from well-meaning viewers of your content are coming from people unable to perceive what skilled artisans see. I made the greatest strides in my work following true but often stinging criticism from others. It may not seem like it, but my comment is an attempt to help, as you seem like a nice person with the ability to grow.
