A young student named Conor sent me some wax rings he'd carved. he had no way to cast them and asked if I would did it for him. I was happy to to have a go at casting his rings, and I even made one of my own from PLA on my 3D printer

Aluminum bronze might even be oxidation resistant enough to prevent Conor's fingers turning green from wearing copper alloy jewelry. Good choice! Why change your channel name, if I may ask?
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
You're the first one to ask : ) Three man reasons.... 1) I'm fed up with people saying, "I was going to subscribe but when it said 'VegOilGuy' it put me off." I don't want to put anyone off with a name when I can do that perfectly well with my videos : ) 2) I fancied signing some of my work, and fitting 'VOG' onto something is much easier than 'VegOilGuy.' 3) Some folks were already calling me VOG for much the same reason as 2. 4) Okay, there's four not three, it's not really a name change - just an abbreviation : )

Jewelry is often cast using centrifugal casting. Myfordboy used lost PLA to do centrifugal casting in a video earlier this year. Check it out!
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
I'm a subscriber and fan of Myfordboy, Jake, so you can be sure I've watched it. You can actually find his comments on some of my videos, which was very kind of him. The only drawback of centrifuges, if you ignore molten metal spinning by you head, is that need to know the precise amount of metal needed in your casting. This is poured into the basin outside of the flask, and the centrifuge pushes the metal inside. I'm not that precise in honesty. But fortunately with a homemade vacuum system like mine (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EGNnH_xbjR4.html) this isn't a problem. Thanks for your input : )

Mark, that's AMAZING. I'd love to see pics when they're done. Please take silicone molds before you risk any castings. I'd hate for you to lose all that hard work. Are you going to do the casting yourself or maybe hand it over to a jeweller?

Have you considered trying to make a magnetic induction foundry? I've been seeing a lot of videos here on the RU-vids of people demonstrating how it can heat and even melt metal for casting. It makes me think that if someone were willing to scale it up enough there might be a very green alternative to using fossil fuels for melting metals with exceptionally high melting points like steel and iron.
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
I did see a company advertising them on banggood I think. I wrote asking if they wanted me to review one but they never replied... at all. That made me sceptical. I may not be the biggest channel on RU-vid, but I hope I have a reasonable reputation for casting. So ignoring me suggested they didn't like the idea of someone who melts metal a lot having a go. Of course I could be wrong there and it might simply have got lost in the system...
@scarletletter4900
@scarletletter4900 5 лет назад
@@vogman That's a bummer, but it gave me the idea to try and find some DIY instructions online; inductionheatertutorial.com/ . I think the person who did this just wanted see if they could do it, or were working on college project, and posted it online so others can repeat the experiment. Ether way, it's something to build off of, and one thing I know you are very good at is building on a good foundation. Keep searching and researching. I have faith that you'll pull this off.

I know I have said it a few times that I am building a pile of meltables, but I am. I plan on building a couple different sized foundries and melt my piles for ingots and stuff. I travel a lot so I find aluminum a lot. 300 pounds at a guess with 20 pounds of copper and 5 of brass. Most is outside. I just don't have a workshop yet. Next couple of months and I will have one 😃 Then the work and fun will begin along with a RU-vid channel too boot. My fiancé does crafts and I will help make items for that. Till then, my piles are building and I am gaining knowledge. To the future 🍻🍻🍻

The totenkopf with runes is cool, carved with special tools? I’d buy a werewolf or one of these, 3D printer needs directions not a photograph, this seems like based hobby, good for him. Beats having to spend money if made it yourself for fun. Dog tags from Otto Skorzeny or copy of rare limited production. Wouldn’t gas burner be cheaper, than that kiln thing? Like use to burn glass or set fire 🔥 to sugar cane, genuinely don’t know. I’d make one for a item or too, but sure,the could do it. Special wax, soda, wow completely a knob.

Hello, im have a question, the aluminium bronze is toxic in rings for the aluminium??
@vogman
@vogman 3 года назад
I'm going to be honest and say I don't know. There's lots of theories about metals being toxic and I don't think there's a definitive answer yet. My guess, as long as it's occasional, it should be fine.

Don’t quite understand your furnace situation- you seem to have lots! Why have you stopped using the homemade one?
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
I guess the answer to that Tim is 'which homemade one?' There's been a couple. For Lost PLA / Wax I need two heat sources, one to melt / burnout / prepare the plaster flask (for which I use my homemade electric furnace) and one to melt metal (for which I use a tabletop, store bought electric furnace - though I've also got a couple of gas furnaces I use from time to time). The choice is purely preference... electricity is quiet, clean and indoors. Gas is noisy and outdoors. But for more on the why, have a look at this video I made on Lost PLA. It should tell you everything you need to know : ) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qxj5eUkAFUI.html

Hey there! Which 3D printer do you use? Also, can the used “lost wax” be reused in the printer?
@gratefulcrown4846
@gratefulcrown4846 3 года назад
Hi, I can’t answer about the printer but as someone looking at getting into casting, no you cannot reuse the lost wax as to clear it from the mould you actually burn it away to ash
@MartynHutchby
@MartynHutchby 5 лет назад
What do you do with the "burnt out" plan / wax, or does it just "vanish"?
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
The PLA and Wax mainly drip out of the plaster onto the oven floor where they mostly evaporate, but some fine ash gathers after a few casts. But the plaster... you're stuck with that mess : )

Quick question is the plaster still inside the ring or di the heat melt it down im confused, so is it just like dipped
@vogman
@vogman 4 года назад
The PLA and Wax both stay inside the plaster until it is heated to a very high temperature. These then melt away to leave holes in the plaster. Molten metal then fills up these holes and once cool the plaster get removed. Then you're left with the rings 😊

Not everyone... but nearly everyone, yes. Why? Why not? As you say, this interaction with like-minded people is great. Even criticism is appreciated, as long as it's genuine and not just intended to be hurtful nonsense. I don't know everything, so if someone points out a mistake, I learn. And, to be a bit corny, I do love getting comments, questions and feedback. So hearts.
