This is my dream, having my own 3D printer and cast my own designs from my home! This is so badass. I’ve been teaching myself for about three years and doing it all by hand, and thankfully found a jeweler who casts them for me ( and gives me greatly needed tips and criticisms) it’s an expensive hobby but gosh I wish I was better. Really wish there was a class I could take in technique

what a workshop....stunning....so many machines and all so fancy and it goes to show this has come a long way since I was a student doing my fine arts degree where I chose silversmithing as my major. I loved it but wow...my fingers were so sensitive with all the filing we did, it was worth it and my favourite was casting. I know it was complicated with the kiln and hot wax and getting the measurements according to what you were doing. This has brought it all back but with a new eyes now that I see there is great advancement with such machinery and tools ...I loved it and thank you for such an insightful tutorial

I have been watching videos about this for days. Your vid does an excellent job of tying things all together so that it makes sense from start to finish. I am interested in making small brass or bronze parts for some models that currently make use of resin printed parts that are not quite durable enough. I think that this is the direction that I need to go. Not cheap to start from scratch (I already have the printer and associated support equipment) but it seems like the only way to reliably get accurate small metallic castings. If you get it right (temp and pouring speed) you can take the peices straight to a buffing wheel and polish it up after cutting them off

I'd love to know more about the limitations of sand casting, I know lost wax casting is better quality and you can basically do whatever you want, but I'm trying to decide which designs I can sand cast and which I need to send somewhere to be lost cast.

This was fantastic. I already have casting experience from 3D printing and casting silicone molds in pressure pots. I knew metal casting was similar but different enough that if I ever wanted to do it I'd need to do research. I'm currently debating printing and metal casting prop dagger or if it would be better to just print it in resin and paint it/faux gold leaf it. Pros and cons to both I feel

Great video! I’m quite familiar with the process of lost wax casting as I used to work with my Dad in his dental lab before he retired and we used to do some fun jewelry projects on the side, but all the tools went to my uncle who started his own lab in nyc. I’ve become a lot more interested in 3D printing in the last couple years and this has rekindled some casting ideas however I live in an apartment and thus can’t operate a hobbyist forge lol not to mention the equipment costs. Just out of curiosity, if I were to provide the 3D design stl & the material, would you be able to cast some things for me? What would you charge for that sort of thing? my family ran a commercial lost wax casting business for 50 years and if he had done it the way that you show in this video he would have been bankrupt in a year. all the tools that you use in the video are ok for a hobbyist or dentist but for a jeweller making items by the thousand no way

Yeah that is a completely different setup seeing this can't make large quantities. This would be more of one off orders, custom work or small batches for cast items to be sold in a small shop. You wouldn't be able to make large amounts of castings for wholesale.

Don't forget that jewelers who use this process can also make industrial parts. Not something you can really hand carve in wax

what's the reason for the burning cycle? wouldn't it be enough to place the investment material in a oven or something to melt the wax out and then just pour the silver in?

It makes sure all the material is gone along with making the investment hard so you can get the best details for your cast.

About to build my own electric kenthal wire lion with a PID controller that can be programmed to ramp and soak temps. Should be buildable for about $150 with a nice PID. But could be done for sub $100 with the cheaper PID. Also building a vacuum chamber with a spare vacuum pump, seeing that the $1000 commercial vacuum casters use nothing but a refrigerator pump 😂 throw in a steel frame, inch thick glass, a few rtv silicon gaskets, and should be able to build a vacuum caster for sub $100. Even if I didn’t have a spare vacuum caster a 1.5 HP pump only costs about $50

I get very confused at the end about how that mold turned into jewelry? Was a metal put over the mold and left on it or was metal used on the mold and then the mold cut out?

12:28 The mould, after burning out the wax, is put in the vacuum machine. 12:41 Then the metal is poured in to fill the space that the wax left. 12:55 Once the metal sets, its put in the bucket to cool and removes some of the investment mould.

Can the wasted train resin be reused or is it the same as a regular two part resin that once it's mixed it's activated and that's it. I guess it just looks so much like wax that it makes me ask! Lol.

No any cured resin is just waste and can't be reused.

So the wax from the mould is in the plaster cast? Wouldn’t it get in the way when you pour in the molten metal? Where does it go when it melts away?

You can do individual links and people do that all the time but as a whole chain would be hard to support to make sure it all doesn't fuse together

If you wait for the investment to rise>boil it will collapse in on itself. Then it's done and ready to transfer to the flask. This way you don't get as much mess and it will barely raise in the flask.
