📜 object history:
The beginnings of the brick structure in Golub date back to the beginning of the 14th century. Originally, there was a wooden stronghold in this place, owned by the Włocławek bishopric, but as a result of an exchange, these lands fell to the Teutonic Knights. In the first phase, the southern and western wings and the perimeter wall were built on a square-like plan. In the next phase (after 1330), the castle acquired its basic form. It was also planned to build a main tower, but this investment was never completed. This Gothic building proved its value several times during the wars between the Order and Władysław the Elbow-high in 1329-33. During the Great War (1409-11), the castle was captured twice by Polish troops, but as a result of peace arrangements, it returned to the Teutonic Knights. In 1422, another Polish-Teutonic war broke out, in which the Golub Castle was the main background. This war was called 'the Golub War'. Władysław Jagiełło's troops entered the Teutonic State, occupied the town of Golub and, after two assaults, also the castle. Once again, as a result of the provisions of the peace agreement, the stronghold returned to the hands of the Teutonic Knights. Only in 1466, after the end of the Thirteen Years' War, during which the Golub stronghold changed hands several times, was it finally incorporated into the Polish Crown. In 1511, the building was renovated on the orders of king Sigismund I, but the most important reconstruction took place only in the first half of the 17th century, when the Golub county was given to the sister of king Sigismund III Vasa, Anna. She introduced a number of late Renaissance elements to the austere Gothic building. Interestingly, the Golub county (and the castle) was held by women associated with the royal court. After the death of Anna Vasa in 1625, it was received by Konstancja Habsburg, wife of Sigismund III Vasa. After Catherine's death (1631), the property was taken over (1632) by Princess Anna Katarzyna Konstancja Vasa, daughter of Sigismund and Katarzyna. In the years 1638-44, the castle was ruled by Cecylia Renata, Habsburg, wife of king Władysław IV Vasa. Later, the complex changed owners many times, but they did not carry out any major construction investments, which is why it retained its Gothic-Renaissance form.
