Originally, a Roman fort from the 4th century AD stood on the site of the castle.
The present buildings date back to the 13th century.
Several times the cities of Como and Milan alternated as owners.
In 1340 the Visconti of Milan became lords over Bellinzona.
In the second half of the 15th century, the Castelgrande was significantly expanded to defend it from attacks by the Swiss Confederates.
In 1500, Bellinzona submitted to the rule of the Swiss Confederates and the castle fell to the canton of Uri.
In 1803, it passed into the possession of the newly founded canton of Ticino.
Since the year 2000, the Castelgrande has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
