Yeah, at the time, mainstream 3d was new and fresh, and 2d felt old, despite the huge advancements it made to the game. Honestly, Castlevania 64 isn't nearly as much a failure as the 2 PS2 3d games, which had no excuse for being that bad. Lords of Shadow showed what a real 3d Castlevania could be.

Honestly, "Wha Happun" has made me develop quite the sympathy for the people developing games out there (not the companies though, only the employees). As fans, we are very passionate about some games and are quick to hate when they come out in a lackluster way, but we often forget that game development is a job like any other, with deadlines, pressures and all that stuff. Even when some games suck I'm pretty sure the developers tried their best to make a somewhat quality experience with their resources while trying to deal with sales projections, company and market demands, fans and marketing and these series show this a lot. It must definitely be heartbreaking to see a game you worked your ass off fail because something just didn't work out during the production.

I just feel like game publishers and people making big decisions are so far removed from their product. Guys at EA publishing or activision just don't play video games and it shows in the lack of quality of life updates. Just inconvenient shit never getting fixed usually adds up to me dropping games eventually. Like call of duty not cleaning up there updates to not make a pretty basic shooter not take up 200+ gigs. Can't convince me anyone who owns the game and is constantly having to deal with it has anything to do with that decision. Or the battlefront 2 shitshow. If they asked and listened to a single consumer of the product what they thought, they would have got told how bad it would play out. Anthem too. Forced a studio to make something they didn't know how to make, didnt want to make, and no one wanted to play. All they could see was the destiny money. Basically put one of their most beloved studios (bioware) on life support out of sheer greed. Just the amount of anxiety that goes into buying games you want to enjoy sucks. I want to support shit that looks cool but have just been made to feel ripped off too many times to ever pre order shit again.

"Wha happun" and Larry Bundy Jr.'s channel has kinda redpilled me on just how hard game dev is, and that when a game ends up being lame, it's probably because the development team had a real bad time. Granted, some games just suck, but a lot of those suck for a reason.

Well, for what it's worth, I have very fond memories of Castlevania 64 and at a time when 3D gaming was new for me, I didn't have much to pick at and there wasn't much to compare it to. At the time, the game and it's gameplay was amazing, and I also liked the storylines.

@@walmorcarvalho2512 "being stuck with an early and ugly version of "THE FUTURE" that nobody asked for." Nobody asked for? Huh. 3D was *all the rage* back then, and we as kids loved it. We only seem to fetishize 2D nowadays because of blind nostalgia. It's similar with vinyl records: it's not like LPs were dearly beloved when CDs came around; it's just the best people had back then, and when digital audio came around, a lot of people couldn't wait to throw their LP collection away and replace them with CDs. Also, if early 3D games looked ugly, what do you say about most 8-bit games? The NES library is chock full of hideous things.
@nickelakon5369

@@FernieCanto until like 2015 vinyl was the best audio fidelity you could get. There was very good reason why a lot of people still prefered vinyl over CDs. And most early 3d is ass, but yes there's also a lot of early 2d games on the nes and atari that also looked like ass, but most snes games still look good today, same with games that got around their 2d limitations in creative ways like Donkey country making 2d sprites out rendering 3d models.

The whole idea of not seeing the actual final boss based on how quickly you completed the game I thought was a really cool concept. Yeah, the part where you carry the nitro was kinda gimmicky, but I felt it raise the tension a bit because if you got hit, you exploded. Castlevania 64 is an underrated game with some great ideas very good graphics, excellent music and presentation, fantastic atmosphere and much better than many praised titles on the other consoles. Yes it had its flaws like the problems with camera and platforming sections, but it was the first 3d Castlevania for Konami and the first 3D game ever realized for its developers so as they said in the interviews, they were testing and learning at the same time how to make a 3d game and the limits of the implementation of their ideas in a 3d environment. Was the opposite for me, Legacy of Darkness was the only version I owned as a kid. My parents initially rented Castlevania 64 for me from the local Blockbuster and I didn't make it far before we had to return it. After that, I kept asking my parents for Castlevania 64 for Christmas, and when Christmas finally came I unwrapped my new copy of... wait, what's Legacy of Darkness? I remember being a little disappointed at first because it wasn't the same game that I played from Blockbuster, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and played it through to the end. Hearing about the history of the development of the games after all these years has been interesting.

The 64 games were not bad, just unpolished. If they would have delayed those games to the 6th generation of consoles, they would have been much better. It's a shame, the 64 games had more of the Castlevania series in its roots (combat, exploration and platforming) than most other future games in the series. If Konami was the reboot the series into 3D, they should look into the 64 titles.

This was surprisingly even-handed given the game’s, I think, undeserved bad reputation. Legacy of Darkness in particular is one of my favorite Castlevania games as, aside from the transition to 3D, I feel the game has more in common with the original games in the series than the subsequent Metroidvania and Devil May Cry style entries did. One thing that I’m sure didn’t help the game’s reputation that was only briefly touched upon in the video was that Igarashi, after taking the reigns of the Castlevania series, not only wrote out Circle of the Moon but also Castlevania 64/Legacy of Darkness, and Castlevania Legend, basically all the games post SotN that he didn’t produce or direct. I thought that was a dick move.

Mhm. The games that Iga 'disowned', in a sense, have often likewise been disowned by fans of the series as well. I do consider this a flaw in my personality, but I can be a little reluctant to play any of the games that don't fall within Iga's canon, myself... Aside from the games that contradict the lore of others, eg, Legends, I personally like the added stories of these gaidens. They sorta flesh out the Castlevania world a little bit more, and it's fun to have a few vampire killers who aren't strictly Belmonts. There aren't many Castlevanias I find unplayable. In fact, there are none. Games like Legacy of Darkness and CV 64 lend us a somewhat fresh, new take on the world of vampires and vampire killers that we otherwise might not have. I agree, it's a bit of a dick move on Igarashi's part. People worked incredibly hard on all these games, they should at least be acknowledged as official Castlevania.

For better or for worse Iga had total control over the series and dcided what ot include and what not in the canon. I don't want to think he had bad intentions with no real proof but i enjoyed Circle of the Moon a lot, and it bums me out it was dissowned by him. It's not like he was perfect either, i had fun with Harmony of Dissonance for example but that game has lots of issues. And i'm still not sure how to feel about Julius Belmont kinda looking like Iga and being the one that gets the glory of defeating Dracula for good.

@@jordankeller4253 rather than it being spite or an insult to those games and their developers, they probably just didn’t fit Iga’s vision for the series and it’s overall storyline that he crafted. Having one cohesive timeline is hard to do when the entries were made decades apart and by different teams of people. Basically what I’m tryna say is it was probably more due to story and aesthetic reasons than anything else. They were only cut out of the current canon, meaning existing overall storyline, not invalidated altogether as entries in the series or as games in general.

FF15 was in trapped in Development Hell during those 7 years because Nomura (who was put to work on it when it was Versus13) kept changing the story until SE executives got fed up with his shit and replaced him with Tabata. As a result, the game we were SUPPOSED to get was VERY different from what we actually got since more than half its original narrative was either re-written or CUT entirely in order to meet its release date. Only to be re-packaged as "episodic" DLC and sold instead of included with the story (which they eventually did with the Royal Edition). Most of that DLC would be canceled after Adryn, because FF7R was suddenly more important and SE learned that "episodic content" could be lucrative. So, no. Square Enix are not perfectionists. They fuck up occasionally. FF15 is definitely one of their (bigger) fuck ups. And I say all this with love, because I did enjoy 15 despite its problems. ETA: SE FIRED TABATA, despite his efforts to save the game (it was STILL INCOMPLETE) and the game's sales. So no. Not perfectionists. Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness really aren’t the worst game in the series as many people like to make them out to be. They’re in my opinion very underrated and misunderstood games in the series. Yes these games have obvious flaws with how dodgy the platforming can be and how the camera is poorly implemented (although a tip for this the camera has two modes you can switch from called battle mode and free mode, you normally want to switch to battle mode when you’re facing enemies and to free mode when exploring, still doesn’t fix some fundamental issues with the camera but does help) and the fact some of the puzzles the games make you do aren’t explained properly coupled with the Sun/Moon card system not further elaborated in that the game does have a time limit if you’re going for the best ending which these cards can compromise if not used properly. The game truly did feel like a 3D transition of 2D Castlevania gameplay and has a very atmospheric feel to it, while it doesn’t have the classic banger soundtracks Castlevania is known for, the OST it does have really does well to compliment the atmosphere. Later 3D Castlevania games would more lean on more combat based gameplay over platforming as Lament of Innocence has very flat level design with platforming sprinkled here and there with Curse of Darkness being in my opinion the best 3D Castlevania due to level design improvements, the crafting system, as well as the Innocent Devil system. Lords of Shadow wasn’t a bad reboot as the first game was serviceable but Mirror of Fate felt like they tried to throw too many design aspects of Castlevania into a blender and you get a game that doesn’t know what it really wants to be. Lords of Shadow 2 was a mediocre sequel and is so far the last Castlevania game to be released that hasn’t been a compilation. The series has been somewhat stagnant since and while the Netflix series has renewed interest into the series we still haven’t had any new mainline games (since Castlevania is currently suffering a mobile gaming hell atm) in such a long time and it’s uncertain when we will. Thank you for anyone who took the time to read this tangent on Castlevania.

I was agreeing with pretty much every word up until you said that Curse of Darkness improved the level design. I don't really see how it improved anything level design related over LoI, the game still consisted of flat copy-pasted rooms and hallways. If anything, I think the castle environments from LoI made this kind of level design feel more natural. CoD had many different locations instead of one big castle, which migh seem good for the sake of variety, but I felt like I was traversing movie sets or something like that. The forests, the caves, the city - everything was structured roughly the same and some of the locations felt downright claustrophobic because of this when they really shoudn't have. Just my two cents.
@YuriNoel7
@YuriNoel7 3 года назад
@@Miguel_OHara928 CoD was more of a sequel to Dracula’s Curse then it was for LoI which is why they went with such variety in the locations since they were harkening back to DC by having you explore the countryside with Dracula’s Castle being the endgame. I say better level design since there’s more of an incentive to use your IDs for hidden passages and the like. I never had a feeling of claustrophobia whenever I played CoD so I think thats more of a personal preference. Don’t get me wrong CoD still has flat level design but it isn’t as bad as LoI. Places like Eneomaos Machine Tower are one of my favorite locations due to the elevator and some nifty design choices like utilizing the wizard ID time spot to progress.
