In the 7th Episode of Shastrartha, I discuss Casual Casteism and Gender Insensitivity in Everyday Language with Pratyasha Rath, Abhinav Prakash, and Abhijit Iyer. We try to understand the problems associated with language and its evolution. How we are used to uttering certain words as pejoratives which are casteist, sexist, and homophobic. How do we deal with such problems? Do we legislate language itself? Or do we appeal to the better angels of our nature and go for a gradual societal change.

Best thing this country could do is put an end to caste. Many politicians wants Hindus to fight against each other and this is exactly what they want. If you notice; not a single politician want the caste to end even the Jai Bheem once because their vote bank survives on caste votes.

According to me reservation system need to be reviewed, 2nd and 3rd generation need to be removed from reservation cycle. And govt need to look into and change the reservation policy now. And it's high time to decrease the total reservation from 60-67% to max 40%, but give it to the real person who requires it. It just need political willingness.

What pratyasha was talking about female slurs affecting the fairer sex is correct when there is a derogatory projection by people. But, in case of her opinion on the law she has internalized the same feminism movement since the 60s as outlined by rollo tomasi. The security that a law provides to females like to have in society e.g. dowry laws. But to what extent should the state get involved needs to be thought out. The problem of female slurs exists in every country. How far can the state interfere in daily free speech?

Like Abhinav tried to intervene and point out, Abhijit is talking of an era earlier than Islamic one. Post Islamic era, Arabs are not even a trace of their ancestors. In any case I doubt if Arabs prior to Islamic era did anything of their own or they were transit points for Indian goods and knowledge above all.

Abhijeet - It's economy stupid Pratyusha - Contextualisation is important to understand meaning Abhinav - Negotiation cannot be fruitful unless the two social groups are at similar hierarchical standing. My stand - Economic emancipation would bring one caste group at a similar stand as the higher social group where the negotiations for sensitivity can truly fructify Once that's done perhaps the groups in question are in better position to empathise and contextualise other side's stand. I know it's not perfect but it's my initial observation on first hearing. Btw brilliant speakers and content as always.

A Tamilan person told be Papan was the Tamil word for Brahmin, I did not know till now it was a slur Paul was the one who wanted to change the food laws Peter opposed it (Nothing unclean has touched my lips).Yes Pontius Pilate was a brutal man and the hand washing episode was used to throw the blame on the Jews for killing Jesus and make the Romans look good.. I'm a Christian but not a Fundamentalist. I left India on Feb6/1982 I live in Hot Springs Ar. USA. I wrote this several months ago since then I've also learn't that the Malayalam word for Brahmin "Pattan " also a slur. So would you kindly mention all the the caste slurs so one does not use them innocently ?. In Southern Kerala the word "Pattan" is a slur for Brahmin.

Pretty sure the person talking about caste even acting like some social Security system was talking about how in lower castes in bad economic conditions, if you leave your caste, you're ostracized and not allowed back and then if you ever need help you will not be able to rely on any support because you're out of the caste. This is very much a phenomenon. Like abhijit said, India has to focus on making the pie bigger and setting up environments for everyone to prosper. Right now, business environment is terrible in India as usual. Once economy is much better, then caste will naturally settle and change. Of course, when I talk about economy becoming much better, that happens because of better and more widespread education. We should not try to establish a social security system(like the one in USA) to replace caste right now. That will not work until we get to the economic level of USA and the proper enforcement of the laws of India

So a rule of the thumb is that if you as a brahmin are offended by the term "brahminical patriarchy" then you know how it feels to a lower caste person when another person uses the words chamar or a bhangi as insults. Same can be applied to sexist and homophobic language and behaviours.

Individuals, communities ans society have a big role in doing vichar manthan on such issues. That's the only way such issues can be understood and resolved. Legislation has very limited rule to provide some protection and set examples but it's is ineffictive to make societal changes. Indian pluralistic society and culture is endowed to take up such challenges but the economic development and increase of resources is a must for having enough to go around and overcome basic challenges. It will take time to dig out of the hole, and it's good to see some digging happening here.

Amazing discussion but just one point of disagreement here...you should talk about caste and gender separately bcz caste is a social construct while gender is not! I am not saying that there's no gender discrimination but i think there will always be gender based slur words because men and women are made different physically and mentally as well! For ex the word "dick" is also used as an insult and men themselves use the word. Same for the word "bitch", i have seen women using the word for their friends and making a joke about it. You will never see a person from "chamar" community using "chamar" as a slur word for someone else!

Solution to Reservation: India’s problem isn’t reservation its the capacity of educational institutes. All education must be made online. If institutes like Stanford can have masters Degree online then why cant the IITs do the same. Engineering streams like Computer Science and I.T. Can go fully online. For other branches, divide the problem in 2 parts. 1. Theoretical 2. Practical Theoretical part can be done online. This will reduce cost of land and labour for the goverment. Involve private companies to built practical branches and they can earn a portion of financial aid from the government. Any how virtual reality labs are also coming. Many of the big universities in west are having online education.

Sorry sir, it's won't solve the problem, in some cases it may also increase it.

That wont solve the problem. We need more solid primary education with basic english. More polytechnics. Basically we need a social conciousness syllabus and skill development syllabus. We are expecting the whole dalit samaj to crack mbbs and ias. Aise thodi na hota hai. Where are the stepping stones for the non academic population? Where is the chance of intermixing?

I agree with this one. If we increase the opportunities, kafi Sara RR khatm ho jaayega, but that has to be throughout the system from basic education.

People talking about anhilating caste. I am not for it today, i am all in for anhilating caste based discrimination. i was for anhilating caste 6 months ago or an year ago. Because i belong to a lineage of pandits all my ancestors till my father were pandits, it was because of the economic downfall we have to move out of our ancestral village to get higher education and jobs. But today, i know nothing about the scriptures, i will soon start reading all of it. But if you say i shed my identity of being a brahmin it is not acceptable. Because it is who we are.
@RAIRADIO
@RAIRADIO 3 года назад
Its is not who you are. Its all in your head. Anyone can take up scriptures and study (although its very hard). No family lineage is required for it. You could also take up a broom and clean your neighborhood instead. No lineage needed either. We are all Brahmins Kshatriya Vaishya Sudra depending on the time of the day. Its useless dividing society up over it.

The Title says "SHASTRARTH". Really? 😆😂🤣🤣 Do you people have an slightest iota of what Shastrarth means? THE PROBLEM IS NOT PEOPLE BEING UNEDUCATED: THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY ARE EDUCATED JUST ENOUGH TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY'VE BEEN TAUGHT. AND NOT EDUCATED ENOUGH TO QUESTION WHAT THEY'VE BEEN TAUGHT.

Abhinav Baad yes, that is caste oppression, and so is reservation. The difference between this oppression and reservation is reservation is state-sanctioned oppression.
