Hmong families even live together. Like, kids living with parents. Then their kids kids live their as well. They pool their money together and live nice lives. At least as far as spending and fiscal responsibility goes. I live in Minnesota, and there are groups of Hmong families that did this and ended up owning businesses and being super rich. It’s smart.

The most horrifying thing about growing up is that you never do. I always thought when I was 18 I would be older or more mature, but honestly I feel the same way that I was when I was 15 and I wasn't prepared for this at all. You don't just magically become an Adult, you get older and more experienced but that's it.

@@henrym5889 The clique saying of "money won't make you happy" needs to stop being repeated. Easy example, If traveling makes you happy, and you need money to do it... money does make you happy in that case. If cars, homes, cocaine, or that weird collection of rare sporks makes you happy and it takes money to get those things, money is what will make you happy. It's not the money directly that makes you happy, but what you spend it on. I can't think of a single thing on this planet that you can get and enjoy without spending money. Before you try and argue that, remember that you are currently alive and if anything in the future makes you happy, you first spent money to stay long enough to get to find that happiness. Generally the only people who say money won't make you happy are just justifying why they are okay with not having enough money to do/get the things that will make them happy. Also, FYI there is research that proved money can buy happiness so you know... science.

To all the high schoolers who get anxiety by just watching this, as I did back then: You will be fine. I promise. I know it feels like you're in no way ready for "adult things" and you feel like you can't move out until you magically become a different, more capable person, otherwise you'd just drown in the adult world. But that's not true. Even if you can't cook at all, have never done your own laundry, and super awkward and afraid - there is nothing magical and mysterious about life away from your parents. Some new chores come up that you'll manage, some old ones are no longer a concern, and you'll get through it being exactly who you are right now. You don't need to adult before moving out, you're inevitably going to adult as you move out. Don't worry so much.
@needicecream100
@needicecream100 4 года назад
Totally agree. To add to this, in case people have any doubts: How hard is cooking? It's easy - just buy stuff and Google how to cook it. Laundry is easy - learn how to do it online, ask your mom, or just go to a place that does it for you, if you can afford that. Taxes, insurance - this can all be done online. People say all this stuff is hard because they didn't expect it in the first place. If you're worried about "adulting", it's because you have already thought about it. And if you've thought about it enough to worry, you've already thought about it more than is warranted, for its level of difficulty.

A tip for young people: Be proactive in learning about adult life! For instance, I started joining my mom when she went grocery shopping, just to form a baseline understanding of what one might need to buy and how much things cost. Also ask your parents a lot of questions! I recently had quite a lengthy conversation with my parents about house loans and how expensive of a house I might be able to afford with X salary etc.
@KreeZafi
@KreeZafi 3 года назад
@@cczsus6513 I had to join my mom on her shopping rounds when I was too young to be left home alone, but as a teenager I didn't have to come. And it's not until that age you actually have the awareness to register what's going on. Plus, if you're just getting dragged along (regardless of age) you're probably not really paying attention to things, you're just waiting for your parents to be done. So my advice is basically to take the initiative to pay attention to the shopping, what is being bought, what things cost, scan the shelves to get an idea of what the options are other than what you're personally getting, etc :) My boyfriend - who is a few years older than me - clearly has no idea how to grocery shop so I have to take the lead to buy necessities. That's no good, every adult should have some idea of how to buy food for themselves
@KreeZafi
@KreeZafi 3 года назад
@@cczsus6513 Why would being rich make you not know how to grocery shop? :P I think that just has to do with lack of experience - another contributing factor may be if you don't really know how to cook and therefore don't have a good idea of what items you may need. Like I said, my boyfriend is pretty bad at it, and when my brother moved out he kinda struggled with it too. It's one thing to just buy a bunch of premade stuff (which is what my boyfriend does, he'll just buy frozen meals and stuff like that) but if you're going to actually cook you need to have some sense of awareness of what sorts of things you need. And if you've never really participated in grocery shopping (being dragged along by your parents does not count as "participating") it's hard to know what to get. You kinda get used to just taking for granted that everything is already available at home, until the day you live alone and suddenly realize you've got no salt or flour.
@KreeZafi
@KreeZafi 3 года назад
@@cczsus6513 Yeah, each person's experience is different. I think a lot of people grow up hardly ever thinking about food - their parents always do the shopping and cook for them, so they're used to food practically just appearing in front of them. If you live like that, it can become quite a shock when you're suddenly faced with the task of taking care of yourself. So I'm really trying to train my boyfriend to shop and cook, he has lived most of his adult life just eating takeout food (which gets really expensive). He has been getting those Hello Fresh boxes delivered for a while, where you get recipes and pre-proportioned ingredients and stuff, which I think is a good way for him to get used to cooking and learning the basics. Eventually he'll be able to get stuff himself :)

It's was scary for me to move out at first when I was 29, but it became happier that my parents don't control me all the time. No more curfews, nagging, or asking for permission to do anything. I moved out because I got a new job with much better pay in SF Bay Area. At first, I was living in someone's bedroom and the home owner was friendly at first. But things turned bad in a month and I started to search for my own apartment. After living in an apartment for a while, I faced a big rent increase and decided to look for a new apartment. At first, I looked at apartments, but then I decided to look at buying a house instead. I had just gotten married so I decided it would be a good time to buy a home anyways. In hindsight, I'm really glad I did buy a home. My home value skyrocketed in the last couple years that I lived in it. Doing laundry is really simple. You just put all your clothes into the washer and add a cup of detergent. Once it's done, just move the clothes to the dryer. After the dryer is done just take the clothes out and fold it all up. The washers and dryers are all automatic these days anyways, so just set to normal and forget it. Bills are really self explanatory. Most of them can be setup on autopay, so you can just set it and forget it. My wife, who is an accountant, does the taxes. But, all you have to do is just get Turbotax every year and just answer the questions. For bills that don't support autopay, I just put them into my Google calendar. Cooking isn't too hard either. Most foods have directions on them so you can just microwave it, boil it, or bake it in the oven. It's not much harder than making ramen in college anyways.

😅 I've come to accept that fact that if you rent places under a certain price cap, but do NOT want to live in squalor, you're gonna wanna develop some DIY and gardening skills. Sadly, most owners simply won't fix things, unless law changes force them to or the house actually starts falling apart. They're often simultaneously very fussy about how clean and tidy you keep the place though! There's most certainly a strong double standard present. If you can find out what your basic rights as a leaser are, that's a really good precaution?

Laundry maybe, the nearest laundromat is just uncomfortably far for me, as for cooking, my mom hates cooking and I cook pretty much everytime I visit her lol, I know it's not how it usually goes but for me moving out was pretty easy and so liberating, student support is really good in the UK even if you end up with a massive debt, which doesn't really matter because the repayment system is pretty damn fair. Decent student accomodation+ maintenance loan + even a single day part time job and I live a better quality life than most adults working full time, I get about 300 quid a month from my part time job, I also have about 500 quid a month leftover from the maintenance loan, so basically 800 quid that I can put aside for whatever I want.

It's scary, but you can't let it get you down. It has been six years on my own, and I'm pretty happy. It doesn't have to be depressing or anxiety inducing. Living on your own is tough, but that's life. You make the best of it, organize your life, and live responsibly and life won't have to be nearly as hard for you. In my culture, young adults usually leave their parent's home when leaving school (college, technical degree or bachelorship/mastery/doc.). Many of my friends and family members are engaged and still live separately in their respectif parent's home, before moving out in the later year with a stable job, stable life, stable relationship and usually with plans about having kids and such. I personnally think that this way of life is much better. Most of Western's North american way of living for young adults is stunning, most of them living in near-poverty because ''hey, you are 18, you gotta leave now kiddo, bye', fend for yourself''. The excuse of ''it gives you autonomy and makes you taste real life and its dangers'' is bullshit. If you are responsible enough and active in life, the fact of living with your parents until you are 21-23 gives you plenty of time to taste that kind of life. The freedom to live in poverty is no freedom at all...

Ah, I remember getting my first apartment. I lived by myself and actually managed to afford all of my rent, utilities, and other expenses. It was great until the crushing loneliness set in. After my second suicide attempt, however, my family coerced me into moving back in with them and now I don't have to pay rent at all. Happy endings do exist.

Indeed. The plan is to save for a deposit to put down for a house, since houses are generally a solid investment due to their habit to increase in valuation over time (at least in the UK). But if you are renting, it is near impossible to start saving, which makes it hard to fund a deposit for a mortgage.

I had to change my major a few times as I began to realize I was never going to manage to complete the education that I wanted. Then I finally just had to quit school and focus on work, because it's almost impossible to scrape by at the bare minimum when you don't have a degree, and almost impossible to get a degree when you're stuck at the bottom. And even if I got the degree, I'd still be lucky if it got me a job.

When you move out you finally realize you had nothing important to do all along. Then you get a job you hate, and become a cog in a machine that serves people who were born financially stable. You quickly realize they're the "real" people of society, and you stare at them going about their day doing things they want to do, enjoying the sunshine, raising families...and wonder if you'll ever know what it's really like to be a real human.
