I'm totally captivated by motor graders. One would assume there isn't much to blading/grading -- "just put the blade down and drive" kinda thing, but there is a lot to it, and it takes time to learn so many of the subtle techniques to get the job done right.

That sounds like a two stroke Detroit in that gimmy Lol. I tried to run a grader long ago on a crooked snake of a drive way thru the woods, was a small Allis Chalmers and there wasn't enough cuss words in every language so I quit and never sat in one again. Man got to know his limitations.

Dad always used a 2 Ft. level made by Craftsman with the "plumbers level" built in which is about a 2-3 degree slope. He used that level for 35. Until he retired and he retired in 1979. I received it in 1998and still use it today.

I had no idea you were a pilot and liked to move and operate big yellow iron. That's pretty cool! Small world. By the way I really enjoy your videos. Great content, and it's nice to see there are still some "normal" people out there makin it happen. Don't buy a roller! Anything that vibrates or compacts is a breakdown and leak looking for a place to happen. Where I work, if it vibrates or compacts, we rent it.

That bit about rolling the aggregate with the blade so it stays homogeneous is genius. Backdragging with a light bucket is the opposite. If the bucket is kept heavy, there's less separation of the gravel from the binder.

I think a lot of county blade operators use the crab method to cover more area. Plus you have less side drift. I remember from heavy equipment operator school books if you lean the front wheels slightly to the lower side of the angle it will counter act the sliding of the machine.

Well I know why you couldn't get the Brigadier up to lift off speed there Jeff, you were trying to do it with a full load......... some wings might of helped a little bit too ! 😁 Done some flagging for a duster company in my younger years and they had an old Agcat that was very, very much louder than the other three and I could never figure out why ! Near as I could tell it was identical to the rest but was at least twice as loud ! I sure don't envy you with the snow coming, that's why I live in a place that doesn't get white..... except in the summer when it gets white HOT ! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

Been awhile since i have seen an ole Corn Flakes (Consolidated Freightways) trailer. One of the companies my stepdad drove for bought 25 old CF single axle, daycab Freightliners back in the late 80's. All powered by 903 V8 Cummins in them. Bought 25 so he could keep the best ten running. Those were some ragged P.O.S trucks.

I’m in Illinois, we can’t use super dumps because our bridge laws are so strict. Very few guys even have try axles because it doesn’t gain enough capacity to even warrant the maintenance.. so we just haul 15-17 ton at a time depending on the truck

Jeff you used to be able to get what they call rollers they consist of 8 plus solid tyres mounted on a common shaft and they were mounted behind the rippers are on CAT graders and you use existing hydraulics to lift etc and you can apply down pressure as well by the ripper lever, just something for you to think about, maybe a machinery wrecker would have a set

Had a couple cases of R-12 & R-22 in the little cans put away, went to use it a couple of years ago, and they all had bled empty. Guess the crimped seals on those aren't for long term storage. Good luck on the weather, word is you're in amongst some serious accumulation areas out there. Too early for that white stuff.

Unreal how rules change from state to state. Here in Tn, tri-axle dumptruck. Can gross 74000 on State Hwy's. And most can haul 24 tons. I ran one GMC brigadier L10 and 9 speed, single frame truck. I could haul 26 tons, that was a money maker for sure.

Thanks for the gravel explanation, Jeff. It amazes me the difference in ways things get done around the country and the difference in materials people use. We are almost strictly crushed granite here where I am, I see up around Pittsburgh they use a lot of crushed limestone, in Portland Maine granite is so abundant they use it for making the curb and gutters around the city- it was rare to see concrete for this anywhere in the city itself. Upstate New York is shale country, but the people up there aren't making heavy highway roads, just mostly driveways they top with granite (it looks like). Thanks for the videos, Winter is coming.

Wow, Look at that Champion 7GCBC Citabria. She even has flaps and the long wing. Great flying Citabria. It will come out of just about anywhere you can get it in. Did he put new Spruce spars in, or put new metal wings on it? There are several wing AD's out on the wooden spar Aeroncas, Champions and Bellancas. They are bad about developing compression cracks right on the outboard spar doubler plates. I'm sure your buddy is well aware, I'm just a Champ and Citabria nut. Have had a lot of fun in them! Easy cheap compactor, use old Kenny and the low bed with the 336 on the deck. You probably weight well over 100k and with all 8 axles I believe you would have the same effect as the rubber tire compactor machines the paving guys use.

Flippin plowed snow Saturday, Sunday, and Monday here in central Oregon.............in September!!! NOT READY FOR THAT $HIT YET!! The 14 looks mean with the Titan rubbers Jefferson, we're slowly getting our 14's into Titan tennis-skippers too. I've slept since, but I think we had them on the 163H for last winter but it has the all wheel drive option so I pay less attention to the traction with it than the standard 14G machines.........be interesting to see how those tires grab for the big girls on packed snow. And..................if you don't cuss when you run grader, you haven't tried to do ANYTHING to the earth with one while it was moving 🤣🤣🤣🤣. They are the most aggrivatingly satisfying machines to operate there is, you can be so damn mad and wanna burn it to the ground one minute.........and just like that all the sudden everything's going just right .............then you think goddamn I do know how to do this, you turn and look back (mistake) behind you, lull the wheel as you turn and come out of your line and your gouging like hell lmao! My favorite is going behind someone that don't give a pinch of poo about their work and you have to recover half the material out of the ditch, process the rocks and brush out of it, reestablish every part of the road, and all the gravel you need to fix the top of this hill................it's down on the other side of that dip 200 yards away..................

I helped my best friend make a runway for his gyrocopter he built. It was only 2000 feet long but it still had to be sloped and graded properly. We rented all this huge stuff like a Volvo G940 grader and Cat 563E roller. We were clueless. There was so many controls on the graders that we spent two hours just figuring out what all the levers did. And there's so many techniques that we just didn't understand. We got it done, basically we just smashed the shit out of it with the roller to fix our grader mistakes. Not an easy job, next time we will hire a pro to do it. He's going to expand it to 4000 feet and add crushed limestone. Not me !
