CAT 1LW Engine Front Plate from a 6NZ Engine Front Plate

Trying to get some of the footage that has not been shared yet out, so forgive me if this video is a bit later out than it should have been. We had a customer who had a cracked front structure plate on his highway tractor engine, which is CAT 1LW variant of the 3406E engine family, and we were having trouble finding a replacement plate. So, we took what we had, a plate from a 6NZ variant of the C15 engine series, and made it work.
As always, thanks for watching, and I hope you're all doing well!

Lol, thanks Lee, we sometimes have to think sideways to get stuff fixed and dealt with in a timely manner. It amazes me how much big trucks are like Lego, with parts and bits that can be fitted in ways most automobiles can't.

Very nice Everett, Brings me back to 1987 at the ripe age of 27 when I started my little side machine shop. Was already working for a local tractor dealership and always bringing work home to do. Many times they needed it right away so I would head right home to do the job. Only about 5 minutes away that made it nice. My first of 4 kids came alone in1989 so working all day, coming home and working on whatever side jobs I was doing at the time while trying to spend time with the family could be a real shuffling act at time. With your little ones of your own im sure there's time your in the same boat. I always enjoy your videos Everett, Hope you and your family are all doing well. Gary

Thanks Gary, I certainly have had fun trying to balance work, family and shop time at times but lately the shop time (apart from a few work jobs) has taken a beating. In the near future we have some more family craziness to deal with after which there will be some fun news.

Thanks Rick, I honestly don't want to be presumptuous as time is valuable. There are many things a person can watch, read, or otherwise take time to do, and I don't take it lightly that some people are actually interested in hanging out with me in my amateur adventures. As for the hobby portion, as we are moving to a house with a large garage I would like at some point to develop it into a part time employment, we'll have to see how the process goes. Thanks for the kind words, I do appreciate them.

One of the things I like most about your videos is that you use your machinist skills to solve real problems. Your examples associated with your salaried work (vs unsalaried hobby work) are great. I noted that you forgot to mention one important consideration in the hole enlargement - knowing what is on the other side of the hole. In this video, you used a table groove, thus when the reamer went through, you weren't cutting into the table, which would be a crying shame. Of course another method would be to raise the workpiece off of the table with spacers of some type or using a sacrificial sheet (even plywood?) between table and workpiece. Again, good work.
@EverettsWorkshop
@EverettsWorkshop 3 года назад
Thanks Bob! I am still a hobby machinist (at least at this point) but enjoy fixing things, so it fits well into my day job. As for the table, I certainly don't want to add any marks to it because it came to me in very good shape (the vise, on the other hand has, some previous owner dings in it). I did mention at 8:20 that the hole was lined up with a slot, but you are very correct in that using spacers or a piece of wood would be better style. I was just feeling lazy and in a rush to get the part back to my buddy at work :)

Hey, Everett! It got down to -18c last night. I think somebody left the door open up there! Nice to see the mill working well for you. I had to resort to my drill press and using one of my new boring bars (in a way it was probably never intended) to create the counter bore for cap head screws. Got it done, but it sure ruined the factory finish on the end of that bar. Watching this has given me mill envy again.

I see you have that new to you mill being put to use. If you wish I can send you photos of my power knee adapter that I made, or you can go back and see the video. It is simple and doesn’t require milling angles to engage the mill knee. Sure saves time and energy on cranking that handle. I use a battery 3/8 ratchet to do my drawbar, the ceilings in my machine shop is low so I can’t use an air drawbar puller. Take care and stay warm up there

Thanks Jim, I don't really have the time for a while yet to start making accessories for the mill, haven't even cleaned the grunge off the painted surfaces yet. @@EverettsWorkshop I would have used an impact like yours just because of the ceiling and my Lagun is a bit taller than a BP or some clones. I’m 6’ and it’s a reach to the drawbar. The first tool is the lift. So if life lets you I’d do that first

I don't have the round column here anymore, it's in my friend Eldon's shop now, but I do think it would have fit on the table, given where the holes were.
