Cat 973C Cutting Around Manhole

Finally a 973 video! So here we have the loader cutting around a manhole base for the first lift. As you can see we are chewing out the walls to have enough room for the loader to work its way around as well as the packer. Once the loader has dug its way around one side, you can see I go around to the other, dig out there and the lift is complete and ready for packing.

The ditch is a good place to learn what's going on. When you finally get a seat hopefully you paid attention and learned all the little tricks to make things go smoothly for the guys on the ground!

Can't believe how much play that tilt cylinder has in it. In there for a reason or Cat engineers wouldn't have designed it that way
@vantagetes
@vantagetes 13 лет назад
@533nick we use laser's for laying grade or sometimes batter boards of the depth of the excavation allows. The depth of the ditch depends on the grade needed for water to run. We don't use lift stations here very often so everything is layed to grade.

@mustangboy402 Yes thats normal. The 2 bucket cylinders need some side to side play to keep from cracking the end of the cylinder.

Hey man.I want to say this is an outstanding and smooth performance!!!
@vantagetes

@farmguy2400 Yes it's hydrostat drive, and yes the rod on top of the right cylinder is an auto level.

I want too.I just applied at Deep Creek construction school about 4 weeks already.I have no HEO background,however I can operate already certain equipments. I agree not as this guy,but I skills to do so.

@wailnshred pump stations not only cost more to build but they cost more to maintain, and if a pump fails and needs to be replaced then even more costs are involved. the fuel is a lot cheaper hahaha

We dont have track-loaders down here in little old NZ, dont know why but generally everything is done with an excavator or a loader.
@wailnshred
@wailnshred 13 лет назад
@lambejr1 You would have to ask the people who designed it, but probably it was cheaper to go deep, than build pump stations along the way to the sewer plant. Remember sewers are gravity flow, it has to go downhill.

@daveyrusselllee With the cylinders movin side to side so much... they are bound to be kinda shiny all the time. I pour the grease to er and she still looks that way.
@vantagetes

@533nick If you dig a wider hole then I have nothing to backfill with and you use more sand around the base. Those are 4ft tall, 4th wide rings. If you know it all feel free to educate us.

On top of the right cylinder is that a level position sensor for the bucket? The propulsion system sound like it might be hydrostatic because it look very responsive and smooth also it has the typical engine RPM drop when shuttleling or laod variation.

@YotaLizard Burnout is the in house Water/Sewer guy at vantagetes. I work for a underground utilities company specializing in water/sewer work. Jason works for a earthmoving contractor specializing in dirt work and now water and sewer.

@mrbluenun I went up out of the hole to go down the ramp on the other side of the manhole because I wasn't cut all the way around yet.

@250bigtime As we have stated many times, that slop in those 2 cylinders is that way from the factory. If you find me a track loader without some side to side play in the curl cylinder... I'll show you a cracked cylinder.
@letsdig18
@letsdig18 13 лет назад
need a lil grease on that left bucket cylinder I can see the pin shine!
@vantagetes
@vantagetes 13 лет назад
@vantagetes Also if he were to cut it out ahead of time, you'd use much more sand and concrete on the collars, both of which cost money. The track loader is there, it gives me the dirt I need for my first and sometimes second lift. If the main hoe moves it out of the hole... then I have to push it in, then come down and move it around. Essentially your moving dirt three times when you can move it once this way. I realize most places don't open cut like we do so I imagine you've never seen this.

@YotaLizard I would wager burnout is running the loader. Push cats are any dozer used for push loading scrapers. Some put cushion blades on they're push cat, but then you can't do much else with them.

i know how you feel bro, although i'm 17 and they have been known to throw me on my own sites in the excavator from time to time, now im stuck with the loader and rollers lol.

its a v pattern for the drive and being burnout its probably a single stick control on the other side

@533nick Yes, and he's using the dirt to back fill against the manhole. So what's daft about this?

Good Video, Is this a Santary Sewer and how many more section are going to be place on the Manhole ??
@vantagetes
@vantagetes 13 лет назад
@533nick We called you daft.. not deaf. I was going to adress this in another video on why we cut around manholes that way but I will do it now anyways. Yes you could cut it out wider with the hoe... but then I'd have to push the dirt in from up top anyways. When we set a base in we have to backfill up to the height of the pipe with sand and a concrete collar where the pipe goes into the manhole. By the time thats done the mainhoe is usually a couple hundred feet away.

I would kill to be an operator of a piece of machinery. I'm 18 and can run loaders and backhoes as good as anyone at my company, but because of my age I'm stuck with a shovel in the ditch. It's very frustrating. I feel as if my skills are going to waste.
@YotaLizard
@YotaLizard 13 лет назад
Vantagetes, is if common for one guy such as yourself to be able to operate so many different machines or do most operators specialize on one type? Also, you mention "Pushcats" sometimes...what exactly is a Pushcat? Is it a regular 'dozer with a very small blade that can only push pans and not do much else? Thanks.

Hello again, I was wondering why you went up on the mound to your left about halfway through the video. I thought it was to push soil down bit that didn't make sense and you did not appear to do that anyway. Yes I know I am nosey bugger, but really interested why things are done, when there is no apparent reason? No insult intended OK? Take care, mrbluenun

Not something we see in the Republic of British Columbia is trackloaders, look back at the 1980s they were common as mud.

Why use the hoe? We have a 973C for that. Even when you use the hoe, the track loader will have to come through and clean shit up for the packer to run through. So you've now just used 2 machines for a job that 1 can do in less time. This ain't diggin basements.

Tracked loaders sound badass... until you find out the controls are designed to make you hit everything around you. Everything is wrong. Steering should never happen with your feet. It should just run like a big skidsteer... but nooooooo. These dinosaurs never got an update.

It's amazing the amount of people who comment on these videos that just seem like they have 20 years experience, yet they are just keyboard operators. Go Canucks, go. Boston sucks.

@redheadedduckhunter Cool. These two guys have the best heavy equipment videos on RU-vid. Apparently Canada is the place to be for equipment operators...there are no operations nearly as big as what they show in their videos in the US right now. These two Canadian operators are putting all the white American operators to shame really. I have a new-found respect for the Canucks! (I use that slang in a harmless, light-hearted way).
