Garfield has an easy legal defense: He isn't a copy off of Heathcliff, he has a completely different personality and acts differently. Heathcliff's shtick is that he is tougher than a regular cat, he doesn't act like real cats do. He beats up dogs. Garfield is based on real cats. He is lazy, selfish, and all he wants is to eat and sleep.
