I am a part of the Australian Antarctic Program, this is Wilkins Aerodrome where all our flights carrying passengers and cargo arrive in Antarctica from Hobart, we also support medical evacuations. Australia funds an Antarctic program to further understand the climate we live in and how it used to be, breeding populations of Animals here in summer and support meteorology with twice daily balloon releases and forcasting.
Our runway is a blue ice runway built straight on the glacier surface and we use snow blowers to remove snow off the ice surface and then utilise dozers to push the snow berms made by the blowers further away from the runway to avoid more snow buildup and keep our airstrip active.
We use three D7 LGP Dozers to push the Snow the Snow Blowers shift off the runway as far away from the runway as possible by working as a team and slot dozing.
These are the two original dozers around 12 years old and a newer one with 2500 hrs, we also have two brand new Next-Gen D7's arriving on this February's Resupply Voyage.
LGP is abbreviation for Low Ground Pressue, which are the wider than standard tracks on these machines so they dont sink into the snow.

This brought back good youth memories of building berms at Willy Field in Mcmurdo back in the 70's. We would have to put the tower, supply hut and other buildings on a berm after the last flight left as part of the winter over crew. They were put on berms so they could be found for the next summer season. We used wide track forked Cat's to load and unload the C130's and 141's.

Can't extend the oil changes because of condensation problems. Water contamination is a serious issue especially if it's really cold. The oil just doesn't get hot enough to evaporate out all the water that condenses in the case when it sits.

@@JM-nt5fm makes me wonder however with the incredibly low humidity in Antarctica if water condensation is still a problem. The only snow and ice that is melting is whatever the engine is keeping warm. it is so cold that any precipitation in atmosphere that does occur is crystalized. Very rarely does it snow, and much what you see gets covered is from wind carrying the ice and snow.

I always wondered how much do they pay operators out there? How long do you have to stay there and do you choose what you operate or do you just operate anything and everything?
@thommosaussieadventures2654
On the Australian Antarctic Division website there is a jobs tab with most of that info mate, but an Operator is looking at 69k per annum with a 63k added allowance when in Antarctica. The options are a full 12months in Antarctica without returning or a Summer of about 4 months long. Also have to factor in about 3 months of training on top of the Antarctic deployment in Hobart for any aviation related role such as this one. I left home in Late August 2022, will return home around December 2023. You are expected to operate everything when required as certain jobs cannot be done at certain times due to temperatures, like it is too hot to drive tyred machines on the ice runway in the middle of summer so we are running dozers day and night shift but when it cools down again we will grade and groom the runway surface.

@@n1uk214 They are shut off. Otherwise, they'd suck a ton more diesel than they already do. Can't speak to this crew but where I grew up the lows got down to -40(C&F) and properly shutdown & stored, they could be started days later, not hop in turn the key and go, more like 20min to get them running, but they'd start. Other option was to keep them in a shed. Amazing how an unheated shelter can keep stuff warmer even if the temp inside is the same as outside.
@thommosaussieadventures2654
Our machines have a blizzard cap the call it, red steel pipe with a capped end that fits over the end of the exhaust and one for the airbox, quite heavy so it wont blow away or lift like a rain cap might. Machines are stored outside but we have them plugged into block heaters overnight or we get up early before breakfast and use a portable generator to warm up the block while we eat then go and start the dozer an hour or so later and let it warm up for a while before operation. I have a video coming of how we get a machine going again after a blizzard.
