Bought it. Oh my I love this phone. My average time on my phone dropped about 4 hours a day within a week. Yall, we are missing life being on our phones all the time! Wake up! This lets us do what is needed. I hope more companies go this route
Are you able to install social media? My daughter is interested in a flip phone that still has features like maps, alarms, texting; But doesn't want to be able to access social media from it.
@@ericacloutier6372 To my knowledge this phone still has access to some social media edit: I purchased this phone and all social media work on it from what i've used so far
@@ericacloutier6372 It does have access, but to use social media would be so clumsy and difficult compared to a smart phone that getting "sucked into" browsing is highly unlikely. It's difficult enough to prevent using social media as a time waster.
I'm on an iPhone 12 Pro and I'm getting tired of how much screen time I spend on it. I would've moved to a flip phone earlier but I still need maps and other smart features. Looks like I finally found a phone for me! Great review man!
@@MrRetroswag this comment has the same energy as “don’t be depressed, just be happy”. Today’s hyper-addictive technology is quite literally designed to override your brain’s natural cues and willpower and keep you scrolling. That’s hard enough for regular people, but now we’re in the first generation of people who have grown up with technology, whose brains have literally developed in conjunction with this addictive technology and who truly do not know anything else. Now take a person who has been raised to be extremely susceptible to addictive tech, and give them a portable, durable device that is literally on their person 24/7. It’s like giving a person who has been drinking alcohol since baby bottles an infinite bottle of vodka that fits in their pocket. It is hardwired into many of us to be addicted to our screens, which is why the entire world essentially revolves around technology, and in large part specifically smart phones. So, here is a person who has acknowledged that they are spending too much time on their screen. They want to change and are looking for a solution that works for them. In this case, getting rid of the smart phone that enables the addiction. And what do you do? Make fun of them, and tell them not even to try their solution, because just not having an addiction is “so easy”, according to you. Honestly, just say you’re retarded and keep scrolling, man.
I'm a supervisor for a landscaping company and was just searching flip phones and ran across the Cat s22..next thing I know I'm watching a vid on it that made me lean more towards purchasing one. Right on time man! Thanks.
@@MustafaGatollari It is a very solid phone. No real complaints other than web browsing, you need small fingers or make the text very large. I have large hands so the phone fits perfect. Basic use and battery lasts for three days. I thought it was not a smart phone but it is definitely a smart phone. You must use T9 or button texting because the screen is so small with keyboard screen.
Nice to see flip phones making a comeback. Now would be a great opportunity for manufacturers to introduce dual-layer screens. We see that technology in some smartwatches, but none for phones imagine the battery life and visibility!
I absolutely love this phone. The small screen limits my screen time effectively, and the key pad prevents me from engaging in long, devolving text chains. At the same time, I appreciate having the touchscreen and the ability to download navigation apps that I enjoy using for backpacking (specifically Caltopo). I also love the ruggedness. It's just about perfect for my needs.
I'm glad you mentioned how expensive the phone is. Some reviewers treat it as if it's affordable. If the weight and ruggedness makes up for the price, then I guess it def is worth it
Great review. Thank you. There are so many other reviews out there that are just a stolen video of the promo video caterpillar made. You delivered a lot of value here and deserve credit for that.
Pretty cool phone. I'm sure it can still limit you on what you can do since most apps are optimized for bigger screens and it be difficult to just use a tiny screen.
@@JoseBriones this is how flip phones and keypad phones in general should be. A phone with physical keypad and an android OS. If all feature phones were like that, I would definitely consider them as a daily driver
I got mine to get away from all that. I want to talk hate texting. And can use it for Google maps. And Amazon music and audible. Plenty for me. Plus I get to not have my nose in a phone all day and more in tune to my families needs
So glad to come across this review! Was looking for a more rugged flip phone for my step dad and this one definitely tops it! Love the feature of it being simple but still smart!
Apple really needs to start looking into making a small durable flip iPhone like this one. I’m tired of carrying around this wide flat screen tv in my pocket everywhere. Not to mention eggshell of a screen that shatters into a million peace’s every “drop”.
Odd, I paid $100 Canadian for a factory sealed and unlocked CAT S22. They have seriously gone down in price but why I'm not sure because it's a crazy good phone. A perfect daily driver tbh. Thanks for the honest critique lad. I totally agree.
I've got a sunbeam, a pixel, and I'm hoping to get this for Christmas. I'm a postal carrier, I need maps and group messages for work, the sunbeam is great, and I'd love to carry it when I'm off work, as for now, I find myself on the pixel almost all of the time since I need it for work. Being able to close the phone makes me more likely to feel done with it.
Great info sir. Thanks so much. Just ordered this phone as a work phone through Mint Mobile. Paid $79. Can’t wait to get it. It reminds me of the old school PTT Nextel phones of the early 2000’s. Once again, thanks for the superb video.
I always wanted a dumb phone to be able to disconnect and not always be stuck on my phone but I also needed access to certain apps so I think I’ll like this
This is very impressive. I've been looking to disconnect recently. Having a smartphone has just been exhausting. I want something I could just have for talk and text. However, I do use my phone a lot for listening to podcats and music at work. If I can use RU-vid Premium and Bluetooth on this, it will be perfect.
Thank you so much Jose for all of the great work you do. I'm on T-Mobile prepaid and after trying for over two weeks and through multiple departments I'm unable to purchase the phone from T-Mobile, you mentioned that you had difficulties buying the phone, it would be a great assistance if you can elaborate on how you ended up getting it from T-Mobile
@@JoseBriones Interesting... The (T-Mobile owned corporate) store I went to would not do that for me, my guess is I should try a different store. And to be sure I get what your saying, was your purchase made as a T-Mobile account holder or as a guest?
thinking of getting one thanks for the rview its on amazon now for like 53bucks i have the orginal cat so it should be more suited for me thanks again for sharing
Hi, does Google maps work like it does on regular Android phones or is it a step-by-step map like in other dumbphones. Great video! this might be the phone I've been looking for. Thanks!!
Pulled the trigger and bought this phone today! Gets here today. Put my light phone 2 up for sale. I feel confident that I can reintroduce a smarter device like the CAt back into my life and use it intentionally..if I can't then I will go back to dumb phones!
Hi, Jose! I found your channel while doing my research to downgrade a little from my current smartphone, while still wanting to keep some features. I really like this option. I have a question: one thing I would want is to use operating system different than Android. I saw that LineageOS and /e/ are some open source options based on Android. Do you know if they are compatible with this device? And how about privacy and security, do you have an idea of how reliable those OS are?
I own a Samsung Galaxy but many years ago I used to have an old Nokia and also a first Alcatel, Now I want to go back to this kind of devices, just looking at your videos and trying to decide. Thanks and rgds from Barcelona
Can we see more on this phone? I'd like to see the usage of the front screen, ports, using apps like Spotify, etc. Very interested in it but I don't know if I should switch.
I have a livestream where I compare flip phones. You can see more of the usability of the phone there. Ports: USB-C. Apps like Spotify: works just like a smartphone. Front screen is read only, no interaction.
This is our phone of choice at work. I love it. I have no problem with the weight. Yes, it's expensive. Jose missed one important review: the keyboard on the touchscreen (only way to type letters) is very user unfriendly.
Thanks Jose, I'm considering going to a Flip phone and you're covering most of the flip phones on the market. That really helps to decide on which one. After all your testing, do you think the Schok Classic Flip is worth buying? Thanks again!!
I kinda tumbled around the minimalist phone deal earlier this month, started with the 6300 4G, moved to the (current) Nokia 2780, and now I'm eyeing this, still wanna be able to use discord and my messaging apps, so this interests me a ton.
Hey Jose, great review as always. I'm tempted to go semi-dumb with my next choice of phone and this may fit the bill. Two quick questions. Does the phone have a 3.5mm headphone jack? I've read some reviews that says it does have it whereas some say it doesn't. Also, is this phone available for purchase in Mexico? Keep up the great content.
@@JoseBriones What a shame. I may resort to another smartphone but uninstall a few apps that are draining my life. Maybe you could upload a video describing a survival guide on how to make the transition to a dumbphone. The digital obsession seems to be imploding as depression skyrockets. Thank you so much for your prompt response. Subscribed.
@@mikeformato8655 Thank you very much for the informative response, Mike. In the end, I purchased another smartphone but deleted certain addictive apps like RU-vid. Hopefully my mental health improves over the coming months. Regards. (reply posted from my laptop)
I have this device and really really like it, the one issue I have is using usb-c headphones and usb-c to aux adapters. The only adapter that i've gotten to work is the one that came with the device. I've tried using my google brand ones and they don't work, neither do my usb-c headphones. These accessories have always worked perfectly for me on other phones, I'm wondering if you had or have noticed this issue? Thanks.
Ordered this one! Sas that Cat are now closed and they stopped creating phones started this january onwards. However, i am still excited to get this one! I spent 8+ hrs on my mobile phone 😢
Mine just arrived and WOW, this phone is GORGEOUS, feels amazing in the hand and I do not find it bulky at all. It is a great phone. Mine does have an issue with heating up while I am using it but for 96 bux I am not going to complain and I will barely be using it so I am find. Is there a way to remove certain things etc to prevent heating, it must be running a bunch of apps I don;t want or need. Regardless this should be the number 1 dumbphone/transition device it blows everything else out of the water, I see why you use this as your work device I love it!
I have enjoyed coming back to this phone. Sold my LP2 to get money back after pre-ordering the LP3. I do miss having a true dumb phone but I will not lie its nice having spotify on the go whenever I need it. Every other app is disabled, browser, user etc and I use the freedom blocking app to lock myself out of text messages for 1-3 hours at a time has really improved my focus. This phone will do the trick for me until the LP3 and Mudita Kompkt come out..will have to decide between those two! I agree with you the phone is heavy for sure but because it flips it doesn't seem that large in the pocket. I just find because its heavy and cumbersome to use I don't want to use the phone so that keeps you away from it. I was just at the library with my kids and I was purely in the moment. I played board games with them, I read, they read, all the while the Cat was in my pocket not calling for my attention.
Thanks for the review. I just bought this phone. I break phones all the time because my hand twitches or gets paralyzed every now and then thanks to epilepsy. But I've got a good feeling this one will last me better.
I’m considering this to downplay my screen time. I also need an app to clock in and out of and an app to communicate with at work so this is perfect. I also rely on maps so just what I’ve hoped for.
Just bought this phone. I gave up on many phones for reasons of them just being terrible and dropping calls or losing service. I had the light phone for a bit but no navigation that is actually useful.. sucks because that’s something I need, due to all the new places I drive to. Hopefully this phone will do and it’s like $60 on Amazon . Fingers crossed it finally gets me off my phone 😅
Got one for € 50 on eBay. What's not to like at that price? Got the 62pro too. Looks like new even after 2 years. Heat camera comes in more useful than I thought.
I switched to this after using a Kyocera DuraXT for seven years. It has not been a pleasant switch. I wish this CAT had true T9. One other frustration, though it may seem minor, is that its nearly impossible to flip open with one hand.
We went with this one! Do you have somewhere where you wrote or did a video about all the ways you can customize this phone? (dumber and smarter) Thanks!
The texting on this phone is terrible and mine has some kind of flaw where if I have the auto lighting on and open it in the dark the screen doesn’t even turn on.
@@JoseBriones I just need a simplistic phone that has gps, email, spodify, and group text msgs without any big issues (which I don't absolutely need spodify either so if a dumb phone doesn't have that then I can survive)
I would warn your viewers there are a ton of issues with this phone according to users on reddit and Cat does not give you a warranty, ONLY T-mobile does so there is a reason this phone dropped in price. I have 30 days to try mine before I can send it back to the ebay user so I will let everyone know if I have any issues. This was the exact response I got back from Cat when I live chatted them: 'Unfortunately, the Cat S22 Flip does not have a warranty in the US or Canada. This device is locked with T-Mobile and all warranty queries should be directed to T-Mobile'
I decided to go for this phone cause I don't want high-tech phones anymore, I bought this cause I don't wanna be sitting the whole on my phone, so I decided to go for such a phone to get a life loool. I'm waiting for my order to come so I switch from my Galaxy Note20 Ultra to that phone. Smartphones are taking up all our days and realized that we spend our time in front of the screen without being productive, and this is one of the biggest reasons I decided to go for that kind of phone.
I am keeping my eye on this device. I do need access to gmail, google for work and school. And access to instagram chats for friends to keep in touch. But this phone still allows you to use those it seems. But would limit how much time youd want to spend on them due to acreen size.
I feel disappointed, I originally thought this was going to be an actual dumbphone, but it's literally just a regular smartphone in a flip-phone form factor. You don't get any of the benefits of an actual dumbphone, I guess it could be a cool gift for your dad or something, but that's it.
Respect Jose. You do what you do very professionally. I really like this phone, but here in Serbia (Europe-Balkans) it is still not on the market. Do you have any information on whether it will appear on the European market in the near future and what are the other ways to get it?
For now it’s just a matter of waiting. I believe that CAT will release an international version, but they have an exclusivity agreement with T-Mobile as of right now. Maybe by 2022 :)
Can you assign phone numbers to the buttons for quick dialing frequent numbers? Also, T-Mobile provides free data and texting overseas, so WhatsApp can be used for calls. Will it work on this phone too?
Jose, this phone was selling for about $270.00 in 2021 but I see it now being sold in 2023 in the US on many web sites, even Amazon, for about $70.00, unlocked. Why the price drop? Another important question, ,Jose: what does T Mobile charge you for a monthly cell phone carrier service for the CAT S 22?
I am in love with this phone but...is there any way to find a CAT phone similar to this that supports dual sim? If they had the S22 for dual sim, that would be total perfection! Usually markets outside the US have dual sim options but the S22 seems to only be found on the US market?
It's 2024, wonder if CAT will release an upgraded model of this with a slightly bigger screen, better specs and Android 12+ AND work with Verizon. I know more power may defeat the purpose of a dumb phone, but honestly? A dumb phone with powerhouse specs is something I would definitely buy. (unless that already exists, of which I cannot find, and also I use Verizon which does not have the largest range of compatibility)
All some people want is a rugged phone to text and talk. No one makes one with a qrty keyboard anymore. We had a LG Extravert for YEARS.....long battery life and a physical keyboard. Don't want the keypad thing of pushing three times just to get a letter "c"
Hi Jose...Can this phone be used via AT&T ? Is it available through Amazon? I can't find it there. Many thanks and yes, I'm a subscriber to your channel. It great! 🙏♐
