Hi Koromo! The more "approved" spaces our kitties can use for scratching and climbing, the safer our other spaces will be. Ha! Kitties need vertical and higher areas to survey their domain, aka keep an eye on us. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! 😀

The improvements were from viewers like you who left comments. The only downside is I made it too easy for our larger tuxy Rosco to get up to the food. The old tower he had to climb and work for it. 😂 Overall, the kitties really like the new and improved version. Cletus was always in the shots, so I decided to mark the Cletus sightings when I started editing the video. He is truly loved, and we miss him much. Thanks for your kind words.

Hi Linda! You really could do all the cuts just with a jigsaw. As I build more projects, I acquire more advanced tools. For the original cat tower, I just used a jigsaw since that's all I had. Hi Rebecca! I have friends offering up tubes to use for cat projects and grab everyone I can lol. I have an oversized 10-inch wide tube I will turn into something shortly. The sisal rope you can buy on Amazon is reasonably inexpensive (this is what I used - www.amazon.com/dp/B00DKA3OGO ) I had to borrow the jig saw when I built my first project. As I progressed, I bought a little at a time. Now, I have almost all the tools I need to make some really cool projects. Good luck with the build and the kitten. Very cool! Nice that you inluded visit to the store to point out that you CAN sometimes get free stuff (they was jus gonna toss it anyways) when my lil one was bout 1 year, i bought him a 3 tier floor ceiling tree from amazon which was fine for a year or so. Then somewhere along the line he grew up. And his climbing style is a bit silly, he likesbto reach outbto the farthest edge of the next shelf n play indiana jones which caused the tree to bend. It gave up one day split in two where the mid sections connect and came crashing down. Hes okay tho he was scared. When i could afford it i went to big box hardware n got a couple lengths of 2x4 and dome other stuff i thought i would need, my ex donated some old carpetbshe was gonna toss n i built a nice sturdy tree that dont move no matter how goofy my boy climbs on it. ☺ i jus made it up as went with not many of the right tools. It aint pretty but it works n he loves it. Thanx for the vid!

@DIYXplorer Год назад
The big box stores usually just toss or hopefully recycle the tubes. The best time to get them is after a busy weekend. I've had other comments say they've used just 2x4s, which works just the same. The great thing about cats is they don't care how pretty something is; if they like it, they will use it. And at the same time, I've bought nice expensive things they won't touch. When I started building things and posting videos, I had to borrow a Jigsaw, and now 2 years later, I have almost all the tools I need to do most basic projects. It's not the tools but the ingenuity of what you have to do to build what you want. Thanks for leaving such an awesome comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😺😺

Hi Noelia, I'm about to upload a step-by-step how-to video today. The tower is not permanent; you use the hardware to secure it with pressure. You'll see it shortly. The only thing I do not have in the how-to video is the led lights installation. It was an afterthought; the way I had done it, it wasn't straightforward to explain sharing in a video. I'm going to try and figure out how to present it easier. These are the lights I purchased: AIBOO Linkable LED Under Cabinet Lights amzn.to/3ZBRxWx and this Flexible Extendable Cables for AIBOO LED Under Cabinet Lighting: amzn.to/3YwQmpS Thanks for leaving watching and leaving a comment!

Well done! I saw your very first version and was thinking that it might not be too durable, but you've solved it right here. I plan to build something similar except that I will just use two 2x4s screwed together to make it thicker and allow adjusting of shelf locations and orientation after it's been built. I also like the foam pads under the carpeted sections but I'll probably just make it pads not carpeting the entire board. Thanks for the idea of what screws to use to make it slightly height adjustable and easy to fasten it to the ceiling and floor. I like the lighting too. I'm now thinking of how to make the shelving more easy to adjust for location rather than have them perfectly fixed because I might want to relocate the tower and so the shelves may need to be re-oriented or re-positioned when the cat gets older and finds climbing a bit more challenging. Very inspirational built, mate.
@DIYXplorer
@DIYXplorer Год назад
Thanks for the compliments, Darius. The tower in the other video did hold up quite well, even with our 20 lbs. cat Roscoe. I really did want to improve on the design, fixing concerns others had. You def can use 2x4s for the pole instead of the tube design. It will be easier to make the moveable shelves you mentioned. If you solve that problem, let me know. I love the idea of rearranging them. With a solid pole, adding LED lighting where the cable won't be accidentally clawed along the pole would be challenging. Some neat ideas and new challenges. Feel free to send me a link to pictures or videos when you build it. I'd love to see your take on it. Thanks for watching and leaving a great comment!

@@DIYXplorer Instead of 2x4 glued face to face, you could still use a 6" tube. But, instead of just one board inside, you could make a cross (think + sign) of wood. Rip the second board so you have two narrower pieces, then glue those like a cross to the original board and insert that. This would allow for moving shelves in various arrangements AND allow space for cabling. And, your reply answered how you did the lighting. I thought perhaps they were each battery powered inside. Very nice! I am curious, if I may, what was your line of work prior to starting your channel? I'm thinking engineer of some kind. You've a very creative mind and excellent hand/eye control.

Hi Melanie, sorry for the delayed reply. I am exporting the finished how-to video as I type this. Drilling 3/4 through the top piece and adding rubber bumpers will give you extra space. Hi Gabriel! I used a heavier fabric on the shelves, which I purchased from a place called Old Time Pottery. Your local fabric store would have something like that. On the base and top, I used a regular throw carpet you can get at any home store. If you want to use the carpet as I had done for the first cat tower, you can find it at Lowes, Home Depot, or other big box home improvement stores. It's basically an indoor outdoor area rug. It comes in multiple colors. I'm not endorsing Home Depot, but this is an example of what I speak of Hobnail Granite 6 ft. x 8 ft. Hi Lorie, it depends on your tube width, how tight you wrap your rope, and the height of the pole. I wrapped mine pretty tight on a 4-inch wide pole and used 3 rolls of 100 ft length. Hi Marie! I've seen videos using PVC pipe. Usually, the super big/wide type you can assemble together. (like this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dqg2ZT-53B8.html ) I'm unsure if a PVC pipe the size of the cardboard tube I used would work. The hardest part is getting the sisal rope to stick to the PVC. The cardboard tube standard hot glue works great, and from what I know, hot glue is safe for cats. With the center wood support in this version, I can screw shelves in tight. Overall, I think it might be a more difficult build. I have a few projects I'm working on before returning to the cat tower project. If I can figure out a way, I'll come back with cat tower #4. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! 😺

Hi Kimberly! Thats tough. Cats can climb up easily but going down is harder. While I haven't posted videos in a little bit I'm still building fun stuff and recording. One project is a cat pole you can mount to your wall. It's the same pole as this video but it has mounts at the top and bottom that secure to the wall. You could create that and mount it at an angle up to the loft. Or you could do staggered shelves up the wall to the loft. Something like this would be neat: Cat Wall Mounted Shelves - amzn.to/3NFwA8r I hope that helps and gives you some ideas! Thanks for leaving a comment and watching my videos!

Hello, I recently ordered a floor to ceiling cat tree but it came with no instructions. Do you think you'll be able to assist?

Hi Hala! The second video about cat tower 2.0 is a very specific step-by-step with cuts and sizes. Watch it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ej_UyUNB_GA.html You can download the cut list from my website for free here: bit.ly/cat-tower-2-build Hope that helps! what is the average total cost of materials you had to pay for?
@DIYXplorer

Hi HottieChick, I mostly used scrap wood from construction sites. I ask them if I can grab them from their junk piles. The pole came from a big box store that sells carpets. I just asked for it as well. If you were to purchase the materials, I'd say around $100, excluding the LED lights. I have a blog post with a list of all the materials, more detailed pictures and videos, and links to the supplies. I hope this helps. - bit.ly/3P8zXW3

Wait, so are the shelves anchored to the wall and is that how the tree is more secure?

Is there is list of materias? Did I miss it?

Hi Melody, you can find a list of materials and cut specifics on my website here: bit.ly/cat-tower-2-build The only difference would be the height; you would adjust it to your house. I'm still working on the second "how-to" video. I've had a hard January and just had to put to sleep my cat Meme. I promise I'll get it up shortly; it's almost done. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! 😺

Oh yes thanks! Will do this with PVC instead of cardboard cylinder. I live in an island so humidity is a factor!

Also, I don’t see anything about the tube height. I have 10 foot ceiling.

Also, why in your website there are two cut lists with the exact same thing? Thank you!!

You are the bestest! What do you think about pvc pipe? Please Sir

In my original cat tower ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mKk9tnHHhxY.html ), people commented they used PVC pipes. I haven’t done it myself, but it would eliminate the board inside (It’s there for extra strength. My first cat tower didn't have one, and it was fine). The only concern I would have is attaching the sisal rope; I know from experience that standard hot glue does not adhere to plastic very well. You would have to scuff it with heavy sandpaper to have it stick. The main reason I use the carpet tube is; first, it’s free, and second, it works excellent gluing the rope. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Wow. You took your time to send a reply. Impressive. Thank you for the glue info. And if it's free, I'll take

I love responding to friendly people like yourself who take the time to watch and ask questions. My channel is small enough I can take the time to reply, hopefully, to answer questions and/or thank the person for the compliment. If you still considering the PVC I'd try some practice on one piece with the sisal rope and hot glue. You could also Google hot glue sticking to PVC to see if there are any articles or videos. Good luck and if you build the cat tower send me pictures.

2023 and you still play music instead of the natural sound of your wonderful build? This is so 2018. C'mon man.....
@DIYXplorer

Lol, cat tower builds don't have many natural woodworking sounds. I could add the freeway noise I hear while I'm working on my back patio, though, if that would be better? 😜 In the upcoming video, I left a little sound, with music and a voice-over which might be even more annoying than just music. Thanks, Kenneth for watching and leaving a comment!
