You’re Setting Up Your Litter Box All Wrong! (Biggest Litter box Mistakes)

In this video, we will talk about 10 common mistakes cat owners make when it comes to litter boxes.
A covered Litter Box
A covered litter box is problematic for many cats. Though hoods do create privacy, they also create a dark and perhaps worrisome environment for your pet. Cats are fearful by nature and may feel vulnerable in a covered box.
In addition, hoods tend to trap odors that your cat might find objectionable.
Not Cleaning the Litter Box Regularly
Cats are very clean animals. They deserve a well-maintained bathroom just as much as you do. If you are not cleaning the litter box regularly, don’t expect your cat to use it.
Not using the right litter
The litter used in the box is a critical choice and many cats are quite particular about the type of litter they like.
Ideally, a litter without a strong scent is preferred. Cats are very sensitive to strong odors and scented litter may drive your cat away from the box altogether.
Many cat owners use clay litters. But Clay litters may produce silica dust, which can be kicked up and breathed in, causing respiratory problems in both you and your pet. Clay litter also often gets stuck to the cat’s paws and is then tracked around the house. It’s messy and there's also lots of toxins and chemicals in these litters.
Even worse, the clay litter is mined from the earth and is not environmentally friendly. Pine litter or wood pellets are better alternatives. These litters smell good, they are compostable, healthier, less messy, and they effectively control the odors.
Not having enough litter boxes
Many cats do not like to share a litter box. In a multi-cat household, make sure to provide enough litter boxes to satisfy the needs of all cats.
As the rule of thumb, it’s best to have at least 1.5 litter boxes per cat. So, if you have one cat, you need two litter boxes; two cats, three litter boxes - and so on. This is because cats see their litter box as more than just a bathroom. It’s their private place, and somewhere they can call all their own. They might also view it territorially.
When you have multiple cats and only one or two litter boxes, it’s possible that a dominant cat could decide that one box is his, and no one else is allowed to use it.
Placing the litter box in the wrong location
Cats like a bit of privacy when they’re doing their business. Place your cat’s box in a quiet location, away from anything noisy such as loud TVs or washing machines that could frighten your pet while in the box.
Another rule is to never place the litter box near the feeding station. If a cat's food is too close to a litter box, the smell of excrement may overpower the scent of their food, which could deter them from eating.
When it comes to location, it’s also important to look at what’s convenient and easy to access for the cat. A litter box in the basement may be unappealing because of the discomfort of going up and down stairs.
It’s not big enough
When it comes to litter boxes, size matters. A 2014 study found that cats tend to prefer big litter boxes to small ones.
Sides are too high
Most cats can easily get into and out of a litter box with semi-high sides. However, an older cat or a cat with mobility issues may have a hard time entering and exiting a box with sides that are too high.
Introducing new litter too quickly
Cats are creatures of habit. Any sudden change in their environment, like switching the litter over to a new brand, can cause them to stress out. If you need to change types or brands of your cat’s litter, do it gradually over the course of about five days by mixing the new kind into the current litter.
Using a litter box liner
Liners are made with people in mind, not cats. For many cats, feeling a goofy plastic bag while they’re scratching and burying their excrement can be uncomfortable and may make them avoid the litter box altogether.
Using too little litter in the box
Cats love to dig and bury their excrement when they do their business. You can keep your feline friends happy by making sure they have the right amount of litter in the box to bury their poop and cover their tracks.
Another common reason for a cat eliminating outside the litter box is stress.
Environmental changes, visitors, or even arguing in front of them are some possible anxiety triggers in cats.
Cats are creatures of habit. These types of life changes can make your cat stressed and stop them from using the litter box.
Urine-marking is another reason why your cat may eliminate out of its box.
Of course, cats may also eliminate out of litterbox due to underlying medical issues. A likely culprit is a urinary tract infection.
Why cats like to cover their waste
Burying waste is a natural feline instinct, and it's not just because cats are obsessed with cleanliness.
In the wild, weaker and smaller cats bury their excrement to hide their presence, eliminate odors and prevent attracting the attention of predators.

When my 15 year old cat goes in his litter box, I pat my hands on my knees telling him he's a good boy & that good boys get treats. It's so cute when he gallops and trots around sideways all over the hallway. When he's in an extra hyped zoomies, he spins around in multiple circles as he runs.

Another reason why not to use plastic bag is it may discipline your cat the wrong way. See may cats ago, I used to spread large Plastic bags under the litter box to protect the floor. it so happened that one of my cat took the plastic bag as part of the litter box and started doing his business on anything that remotely resembled a plastic bag. it was a very laborious and painful journey to retrain him not to do that. 😅

The wood pellets are great but you have to have the right litter tray. It is two layered the urine breaks down the pellets every few days lift the top tray off and clean the bottom tray. You also need the correct scoop. The correct scoop will scoop up the poops which can be flushed down the toilet while allowing the pellets to fall through the grating in the scoop. A bag of pellets can last months.

I have got 7 rescue cats in my home. I have 4 large low litter boxes , no covers. They have plenty of room and don't have to jump in and out of these, they just step out preventing litter from getting on the floor. I scoop them daily and add some new litter if needed. Change the entire litter boxes about every 5-7 days. This has been working fine for almost 5 years now. They have NEVER gone to the bathroom on the floor. Not once! The litter i buy has no dust at all, and no scent but it works great against odor. The cats are free to roam the house, both upstairs and downstairs. Two of them sleep on the end of my bed at night. The wood pellet system with a double pan with multiple holes in the upper pan so the sawdust can be sifted through to the underneath pan is what we have used for years now. It is perfect for almost eliminating odours and cheap and easy to maintain. Some older cats may not be able to transition to it. Our five year old rescue cat took to it immediately.

I run a cat rescue with over 3100 cats a year. A sifting box is a waste of money. Simply shake the litter box, the wet will go to the bottom and the feces will come to the top and scoop the feces daily. But the pine pellet expansion is the job of the pellet. It will be ok to expand as a sawdust, then let the sawdust absorb once again, dont waste the pellet litter, many do. with over 100 cats, we go thru about 4000# of pellets and it is very inexpensive to use if used correctly.
@Sotanaht01

@@PawsForACauseCatRescue It's even cheaper if you use the animal bedding version, which is the same stuff. But regardless of what kind you get it's pointless if the cat doesn't like it, which is all too common (just read the reviews on any wood pellet litter)

@@PawsForACauseCatRescue I have a smaller rescue here in Northern Michigan. 60 cats on premises. I find you don't really need to shake the box. If you just tilt it to one side, feces will rise to the top and all wet areas or feces planted in the bottom is easy to remove. Then repeat to other side tilt. I've been using pine for 3 years now and cats and I both are impressed with it. Thank you for all the work you do at your rescue. Mine is small but I'm the only one doing the full scope of work required to care for them.🐾🐈

Tried sifting boxes and didn't like them. First, most of them are small, especially if you have large cats. And I found that wet sawdust would clog the sifter, and urine would make its into the bottom pan. I use a 13-1/4" stackable classifier gold prospecting pan with 1/4" mesh on top of a 5 gallon bucket with a compost bag inside of the bucket. A 5 gallon bucket will hold more sawdust than any sifting box. And as the prospecting pans are designed to sit atop a 5 gallon bucket, they do so perfectly. I use medium mixing tubs, 20" x 28" x 6" from Home Depot, less than $8 each as very large litter boxes. I use a dry food scoop, and scoop the pellet blooms into the pan, stir and shake until only pellets remain, then using the prospecting pan, I toss the remaining pellets back into the box. As no urine is making its way thru this setup, there is no clogging or collection of urine. But there biggest bonus to me is that l can use any litter box of my choice.

in my experience the single most important factor for a happy cat is the size of the litterbox. if the box is huge, you need very little litter. all my cats loved to be able to walk around in the box, and build little littercastles before they do their thing right on top of it. sifting was not needed, the dry cigars just fall out of the next castle they build in a different corner., ready to be picked up. and with silica litter, all the pee gets absorbed anyway.

I've been searching for the perfect litter box solution for twenty years. After trying a variety of litter and methods, I eventually discovered the best option for me: a big plastic storage container. I've been using 19H x 17W x 21L same litter for twenty years now; I'm in my 2nd set of 3 kittens each time. I cut an opening 9 x 10 inches at the top, and I put a litter square stool next to it for easy access. I have two litter boxes, one on the main floor and one upstairs. I will talk mainly about the downstairs litter because that is the one they use the most, as they don't go upstairs often. I use 40lb ANTIBACTERIAL Dr. Elsey's Multiple Cat Litter. I don't use a liner and pour half of the bag into the box. I scoop the litter 2-3 times a day and pour the other half of Dr. Elsey's litter 2-3 days later to freshen up the box. I also change the litter every 7-10 days and wash it once a month. This system has worked out perfectly for me and my three cats over the last twenty years, and I haven't had any issues with smell or their health. My cats have been able to climb up quickly into the litter box, and so far, my first set of cats lived healthily from 14 to 17 years. My current cats will have the same long life span. WARNING! DON'T USE BAKING SODA. After pouring in the litter box, it took two weeks before two of them started hacking. I brought them to the vet and told me they have asthma. I refuse to believe her so I had to figure out what I changed in the last two weeks; it's the baking soda! I stopped using it, and one of them has completely recovered. The other one continued to have asthma and all because I put that baking soda!

Thanx for the vid. Interesting idea with pine litter. :) I knew a cat owner, who used an empty litter box with double bottom, placed it near his toilet, and his cat happily used it. She would crawl inside, do her business, scratch around instinctively to "cover the waist" and leave. And the owner just needed to throw the waist into the toilet and rinse the box a bit with water. - Very easy, clean and no need for extra expenses on litter. For those who didn`t guess: double bottom is needed to leave the liquid waist on a lower level so that a kitty wouldn`t dump her paws in it. :) There are also some cat owners who manage to teach their pet to use the human toilet :))) - without any extra tools or sometimes with a smaller toilet seat that is put over the regular one.

Some Pine/wood litter brands/ products are very rough and hurt their paws. I certainly don’t want to put any weigh on my hands there. Some brand offers softer texture, less pine smell, and clumping options instead of shifting. I leave new ones left open to reduce the smell. For those with backyard, I saw someone on RU-vid wetting pine pellets to disintegrate to sawdust half way and use it as non-clumping cheap litter. Since it’s not clumping, he just change it more often and dump #1 soiled sawdust to compost after #2 are discarded.

Oof... that takes quite a spacious dwelling to place the litter boxes with consideration to all the recommendations (big enough ones, more than one, in private area our of traffic, etc). I'd literally need to dedicate a whole extra room to fulfill all the requirements. :) Surely a luxury many cannot afford. I have two cats (they are brothers) that have been using a single (covered) litterbox for years and they have been very accommodating to be pleased about it which I am very lucky with. Have been using pellets for most the time; have tried all other kinds of fillers and this one turned out to be the most practical one. (also to add 1 kilo of clay != 1 kilo of pellets in terms of volume; the latter can fill much more space)

I don't agree with this video almost at all. Everything said can be true but is also, in a sence, completely wrong. I use a closed litter box (took the door off) with a slight sent. My cat doesn't mind at all. I clean her litter box every night before going to bed (partially also because her litter box is in my room and no one needs to smell poop before bed) and she loves it. I think that if your cat doesn't like the litter box, just try changing one per one thing until you hit the jackpot. We are all different and so are cats. What one cat may like the other may detest.

Thanks a lot, I'll try it one by one. I'm desperate because there is one rescue kitten that stops using litter box and keeps dumping on the floor in front of the door of the cat room. Yes there are 3 kittens inside the room, but they are from the same litter so they are all siblings. I don't know why now one of them seems to protest and do her business outside the box. See I can't open the doors without spreading it. So stressfull I have to put her inside cage with litter box. Here she behaves normally, do it inside litter box. But once I let her out she'll do it again. I wish I can learn from this video and find best solution for her

I agree with everything in this video. Having raised over 17 cats (and at one time we had 13 in the house) I maintained a large number of boxes to accommodate them all, had the requisite amount of litter, different box heights for the different age groups and except for one who was an obsessed coverer, flinging the litter out of the box, we had no problem. After the others became old and later passed away, we got Poncho. He is so much bigger than any cat we've ever had, and the other boxes we had weren't big enough. I bought the largest one I could find, but he frequently stands in the box too close to the edge and pees over the rim and onto the floor. Guess I'm gonna have to look into farm equipment for a small animal waterer. Still love him to pieces, though.

Granted, he'll still use the box we started when we first got him and I was still looking for something more sizable, but he (and our second) kick so much litter out of it. I only keep it down because we have it and the room its in doesn't really have space for a larger box at the moment. . .they both use it often though.

I have 1 spoiled cat, 2 boxes for her. Here it is, one she chose using strictly to urinate, which is the smaller of the 2 in fact, she has used the smaller since she was a near adult kitten when I'd first rescued her 2 years ago. The larger box I purchased as she grew and for a good 1 year plus some months after she'd challenged me training her i.e I'm assuming she may have been born outdoors, then captured with a group of cats by local animal rescue team because she wasn't trained nor did any instincts give way which took a couple months of a hard won various efforts to finally get us on the same page! 1.5 years or so she will not poop in her box she picked to poop in anymore without a struggle!! She's literally gone in reverse refusing to go #2 in the second box let alone either boxes leaving me unwanted drop offs anywhere other than the proper receptacle! She always uses her original box to urinate and thank heavens she won't ever pee outside her one box! Nothing has changed there. However, I'd pay handsomely to figure out why she's canceled going in her box anymore to poop! It was so cute that on her own she'd created her own methods of which box she habitually used for either of doing her business, only to have reverted back to the beginning of me litter training! Lastly, she is an indoor as I live in an apartment building. Besides, she hates it when I saddle her harness on and take her out to where I just quit that idea nearly a year back! But this newest bad habit of pooping anywhere else other than her box is a first of any cats I've had! I keep both clean which I tell by her language and demeanor she super appreciates! It's highly disturbing to see the one remaining as clean as can be yet she goes everywhere in the apartment other than using the one that she'd marked strictly for pooping and the other to pee!! I'm sadly at my wits end 😞 Please, if anyone can offer anything you may even slightly think could solve this mystery and resolve this problem, I would much appreciate it!

I think you should completely dump out the litter after 3 days if possible and put just enough to cover their elimination and use garbage bags that will cover the box so you can use that as a liner. Because all that used litter, probably bacteria grows in it and you want to start over with fresh litter every time. But keep just a little to put in a spot so they know it's their box.

I do love this video and all the other videos that are posted on this channel, However i feel the video and people just are not getting the full picture. Before i continue this paragraph though, bare in mind im not offended or trying to cover people who don't actually do a great job taking care of their cats, im only stating what needs to be stated for the cat parents who actually love their felines a lot and don't really have the confidence to state what im gonna state. So I Have two lovely cats. one is precious and the other is Rosie, Rosie is actually in my profile picture while precious is a gray tabby just like Rosie. Except Rosie is an orange tabby and is actually rare because of being a female. However, my point is there are a lot of "how toos" and "what your doing wrong" vids everywhere on the internet. However i only follow like 25% of all these videos, and reason being is because NOT all cats are the same. think about this, some cats love being in water. Which is something most people would not recommend a cat parent to encourage as you can be scratched. another thing that cats do on a rare occasion is love being dressed for photos, this is another one that this channel and a lot of other people don't recommend. However i see some people dressing their cat up and that cat actually looks happy with being in a outfit. ( I'm also not saying i would do any of this because my cats are not the 0.1% of rare cats that love these scenarios) im only saying that sometimes it really doesn't matter how you set up a litter box. all that matters is if your cats are happy and content with were they are. Think of it this way, you can have an owner that follows this step by step, but if the cat isn't comfortable with their owner it won't matter how many times you clean that litter box, that cat will stay the heck away from you for as long as it takes. i do use clay litter that is scented however i do keep it cleaned and take the extra step to empty the litter box every few weeks and bring it in the bathroom and actually scrubby dub dub and make it shiny and clean. yes i use bleach as a soaker, and yes i use other chemicals that a cat could "smell" from a mile away, However i know darn well i do better then most people who will leave a litter box for days and not even empty it out. Then wonder, HUH why isn't my cat using this litter box? well maybe its because you treat that cats litter box like you would with your room, Leave it a disgusting mess.... If you have to watch this litter box video you really should not have a cat in general as its a question of, Can you really handle the intense responsibility of a feline companion, anyways. Nice video @Jaw-Dropping Facts. I watch a lot of these and they are very interesting to know.

Pine pellet litter. If it doesn't clump, then how do you know where the urine starts, and where it stops. Doesn't it all look the same ? With the clumping clay litter, the urine causes a clump, so that I know exactly where the urine is/was. My previous cat liked the 'Special Kitty' clumping multi cat strength, odour control, fresh scent, but the damn stuff still has scent in it. It's so hard to get away from the damn scent. Some manufacturers and people have scent on the brain. I'm rescuing two cats tonight, and I hope that they will like this tonight at least. Thanks, Aarre Peltomaa

I have an issue with this poster saying that enclosed litter boxes should be avoided. If your cat finds comfort in an enclosed box w/ a single opening (cats tend to find areas like this where they feel safe, especially if it's in a home that they already feel safe in.) then more than likely your cat will use an enclosed litter box plus every single one of them these days comes with built in vents on top with replacement filters for them.
