I sailed monohulls all my life until I retired and became a snowbird on a used Voyage 380 Catamaran in the Eastern Caribbean. Every boat is a compromise. You do one thing and the are consequences in an other area. My biggest complaint is that it does not sail upwind very well. I did not have the budget to buy a Catana with daggerboards My solution was to motorsail when beating. Unfortunately, the pictures of cats that you show are what I call Condo Cats, big boxes with lots of room but sail like a log. My boat is very comfortable for four, will hold more but small enough to single hand and rigged just for that, all reefing etc is done from the cockpit. I try to keep it light, but that is a difficult chore, need more spares. The bulk of your talk is about seamaship, which all sailors should practice. Weather, weather, weather. you are right. A cruiser stays at anchor until it is good for him. Unlike a charterer who is on a schedule and has to go go go. The resulting nice sail puts a smile on my face. To sum up, know the strengths and limitations of you vessel, practice good seamanship and it will really reduce that stress you talk about.

I grew up on boats. My extended family was or is in various commercial marine industries. That, plus a disastrous enlistment in the US Navy lends some validity to my comments. At one time in my life I abandoned boating altogether and became fixated on mountaineering. But spinal cord injury in 2012 ended my climbing career and I am back to boats and I'm seriously eyeing one for a retirement home. In any case I want to touch on a few issues that I personally hold important. 1. Man, if you are going to stress out that much to where it takes years off of your life, you might reconsider you avocation and switch to golf. I understand you were speaking in metaphors but it doesn't change the fundamentals: sailing is continually stressful. A powerboat much less so. But that is an enormous unmentioned problem. No one manufactures a true displacement hull diesel powered vessel in smaller sizes. ..the kind that burns about 0.75 US gallons per hour. It is not difficult to find a true blue water sailing cruiser in the 28' to 32' range on the new or the used markets. Try finding a seaworthy and sea kindly power cruiser in that size range. If I could find one I would retire tomorrow and set sail, absolutely no exaggeration and no pun intended. If anyone knows of one I would be eternally grateful if they could send the name and the manufacturer's name to me here. 2. Life is too short to drink crappy wine and far too short to sail on an ugly boat. I know this is about as subjective as one can possibly get but I find catamarans to be hideous in appearance. They are the blue water equivalent of the proverbial inland houseboat that looks like a loaf of bread on a raft. To be brutally truthful, I can afford a nice catamaran. But to be even more brutally truthful I wouldn't buy one if I had Bill Gates' checkbook. 3. I see advantages to multihulls although the advantages are pretty much limited to power multihulls. I know more than a few people who become violently seasick even on protected inland waters such as the Intracoastal. In such cases the high initial stability of a cat might be just what such unfortunates need. I also see the advantages of power cats for law enforcement and military purposes. Their high speeds are well known. Lastly, I can see the advantages of multihulls as ferries. But I have an engineering objection to multihulls. There are far too many "connection points" on multihulls while a monohull essentially has none except for the keel in certain designs.. I'm not insinuating that cats or tris are unseaworthy. I am insinuating that they are less seaworthy than a monohull of equal quality of construction. And although very few sailors will ever find themselves in that situation, in extreme seas I do not trust a multihull at all.

Good video. Honest. These days maybe it should be Mono vs Performance Cat vs Condo-maran. Performance Cats: Seawind 1600 (52') Light/Heavy ship 13t/16t; Outremer 55 13.9t/18.5t Lagoon 50 Lightship 21t, Lagoon 55 _29t!_ . I don't think many non-saillors who've been on condo-cats are going to like my performance cat. "Where's your hot tub?" The day I figured out reefing on a monohull (they didn't get around to it during classes) I learned two things: 1. The boat sailed at close to the same speed, but upright and 2. No body else (about 30 boats) out of Marina del Rey that day, in those 15-16 knot winds was reefed. Sure they didn't have to, but almost all were leaned over - very picturesque - but they could've been more comfortable. I'm sure they'd all share that widespread criticism of cats: "You have to reef by the numbers." Meh - I'll reef by the numbers. I've ordered a performance cat. Also when I began to dream of sailing, I had this mental image: after an exciting day of sailing, kicking back in the saloon looking out the window at all the wonderful places I'd sail to. Then I started looking at boats. A few had windows you could see out when you were standing up, a few had them lower down, I think the Halberg Rassys had both, and then there were the pilot house boats - but not very many. Why go sailing in cave? (At my house I have no window covering in the bedroom. I open my eyes in the morning looking at a 10,000' mountain.) I hadn't even considered cats - so I looked into them. Seaworthy? yes, plenty of glass? yes, do they implode in rough seas? Apparently they don't. A lot more expensive? Yes - but I've been saving up... Usually only one generator on cats, but now with more efficient heat exchanger HVAC units and lithium batteries, cats are going for larger, multiple alternators (12v and 120v on both engines) and ditching the genset. Hybrids are just now coming on the market. A few years before I got the sailing bug, when I got my Prius, my second thought was "this drive train would be great in a boat." I was a sea kayaker so I knew all the benefits of making as little noise as possible but I also understood the range/weight of a tank of fuel versus batteries.

I lived aboard a 2013 FP Lipari for 5 years and have been living aboard my 2019 Jeanneau 440. Both boats singlehanded? If you take 100 pros of the catamaran vs monohull debate. My (I said My) opinion is 55 pros to catamaran and 45 pros to mono for most people. It comes down to livability vs sailing to keep the debate simple.

Hi, things you didn't mention : . Cats are more stable but they "follow" the movement of the swell (where monohulls "roll" because of the keel). People with seasickness issues will have problems on cats. . The structure of cats is less solid and durable than a monohull. A cat is made of a three parts glued together (and sometimes fiberglassed) and this is a weakness. A lot af cats have small cracks. A monohull is mpade of one part. . Big monohulls have a some space on the deck but you're right, equivalent cats have more space. . The sensations (and the possibilities) of sailing. If you compare a monohull to a motorbike, the a cat is an ATV.

Hi! I've been watching your channel because I want to buy a sailboat for long distance cruising and I don't know anything about sailing. So your vids really helps. But I do have a few years experience as a tugboat captain, so an anti-stress tip from me to you is, make lists for everything. Food, spare parts, potable water, fuel, life jackets, flares, basically every kind of stores should be listed and dated. Knowing all of that and keeping those lists routinely updated releaves 80% of stress. The other 20% is due to inexperience, bad behavior and unfortunate events. Which is unavoidable even for an experienced captain.

Anchor dragging isn't a catamaran thing, it's a poor seamanship thing. It's probably true that it happens more often with cats because cats are the majority of chartered boats in the areas where they mainly sail, which means a much higher percentage of inexperienced sailors. Also, I'm not sure where you got the idea that they need more scope than a monohull. Cats recommend a 5:1 minimum scope for all chain, just like monos. anchor scope is based on weight/force that can be held. Since cats tend to be lighter than an equivalent mono, the extra windage of the cat is largely accounted for. It could be argued that the higher mass of the monohull makes it more likely that once it's started dragging it is harder for it to stop due to its momentum (which is typically a big plus for monos over cats). It's certainly true that cats move around a lot more at anchor, but I'd wager the vast majority of the bad reputation cats get here comes from inexperienced sailors and people just being bellends. Regarding reefing. Everything I've seen suggests that cats actually tend to be reefed slightly later than monos. While it obviously depends on the specific boat and conditions when you should be taking your first reef, most recommendations I've seen for cats is to take your first reef in 18-22kt of wind. Meanwhile I've seen a lot of monos that are thinking about a second at that point. Not to mention the typical recommendation I've seen is 15-20 for a first reef on monos. I suspect this is far more dependant on the specific boat than whether it's a monohull or multihull. Also, your reasoning for why a cat needs to reef sooner doesn't make sense. Cats have stronger rigging to accommodate the load, so if you're making the rig stronger to be able to handle the load, then it should handle the load, not be worse at handling the load. The example of Delos beating the cat wasn't high winds or rough seas, lol, I suggest re-watching that video. IIRC it was low 20s? I mean, sure that's "high" but even the guy in the cat in that video talks about sailing in 50kt. I also think that the cat reefed way early (he even mentions that he reefs 5kt earlier than when it should have been). I also suspect he pointed away for some reason, because they were at 40 degrees early on, but somehow Delos was pointing higher at the end. Higher than 40 degrees sounds incredible for a ketch, which means that he had to have pointed away at some point. They don't really go into much detail in the video, unfortunately. I also somewhat disagree with the sentiment that cats are "way way faster" than monos. This is *highly* dependant not only on which cat you're talking about, but also which monohull. There are monohulls out there that will give a fast cat a run for its money, but there are monohulls out there as well that even a lagoon could beat. At the top end I think I would agree though. The fastest cat (not counting racing cats) is probably faster than the fastest (non-racing) mono of the same waterline, though I think that has become a lot less true over time as modern monohulls have adopted more of the "racing pedigree" design concepts. Solar capacity is probably one of my biggest driving factors. I would love to have a monohull because there really is something magically nostalgic about them, but you just can't get enough solar on a mono right now. I want a zero carbon boat that I can cross oceans in, and right now that is just not within the reach of a monohull.... yet!
@FlesHBoX
@FlesHBoX 3 года назад
I would also point out that there are several downsides to catamarans that you didn't list. 1. Despite having generally more room, cabins tend to be more cramped without sacrificing performance in catamarans. 2. Catamarans are much more prone to hobbyhorsing (you can sacrifice interior volume forward in the hulls to improve this) 3. Catamarans make (generally) more leeway unless you are willing to sacrifice interior space for daggerboards or add complexity and failure points with swing keel centerboards. 4. While cats don't heel more than a few degrees, some people find their movement uncomfortable when waves raise one hull then the other. Especially in confused seas. 5. Because weight is such a big issue for cats, some manufacturers/designers basically outright lie about this detail (printing light ship displacement as a weight, not including things like engines, fuel, water, etc...) which can make the purchase decision harder. 6. Kind of a good/bad thing, depending on which side you're on, but cats seem to retain their value really well these days, which means buying a used cat doesn't really get you much more for your money. While "there is no such thing as a cheap boat" this rule is probably a factor of ten more true of catamarans, lol. 7. If you have a cat you will probably have to put up with people who still believe misconceptions that were disproven decades ago about how you made the wrong decision, or assume that you can't sail. This is probably mainly true online on forums, youtube videos and comments and what not. Cruisers seem to be generally awesome people who don't care what boat those around them sail, and I suspect most of this attitude comes from armchair sailors online.

You are *absolutely right* about the potential for monotony on a monohull, although it depends a little bit on your deck layout. There's usually some place on the foredeck of a beamy, sloop-rigged monohull to hang out when the wind is light. A current Island Packet has a lot of coachroof eating into the foredeck, and the hoyt boom for the staysail clutters up whatever's left. As a general rule, though, you're right, you fall into a routine pretty quickly, and a routine can quickly turn into a rut if you and your shipmates aren't careful.

I would like to add one more and very important advantage for the CAT. The dinghy davit. Yes, you can also get one on a monohull but the dinghy is blocking your access to the sea when on the davit.

Your last point about things to stress out over was very relatable. It reminded me of the old airplane owner joke....What's the difference between a non-owner pilot and an owner pilot? When the non-owner pilot hears a strange noise he thinks "Oh no, I'm going to die!!", when the owner pilot hears a strange noise he thinks "Oh no, how much is this going to cost??" Lots of similarities between owning a plane and owning a boat I think.

I understand your reasoning on more power but I wouldn’t say it really decreases worries. As you started adding more things that run on electricity and each thing is another thing that can break and need repair. And most of the things you mentioned as worries are just part of sailing period. Personally I’m more a KISS fan. And I don’t mean the band. I mean Keep It Simple Stupid. For me all those things like two engines two generators more solar equal more things to maintain. More worries. My perspective when I started this sailing thing was from camping. You see the HUGE motor homes that have to stay at the KOA lot but are a hotel on wheels and then you have me a backpack a tent and a sleeping bag. Everything I needed to survive was on my back. But I could adventure away from campgrounds and roads and see wildernesses the motor home RV could not. So for me I didn’t look for a big yacht. A cape Dory 28 has everything I need. And I don’t worry much as it’s easy to maintain in comparison to larger boats it’s made to go anywhere and frankly I’m happiest at sail not at anchor. As soon as I’m somewhere I’m planning my next passage. But I also get it as space is limited my lifestyle on board isn’t for everyone (ask my wife) but for me it works.

This will seem apostacy, but honestly I've been looking at trawlers. Power and space are the greatest concerns. Where to put the treadmill and how to plug it in! A diesel would do, but bring noise and dollar burn as we go. The trawlers big sofa is overboard: treadmill space. Your pro/con list was a mind-changer. Well thought out and VERY helpful. One thing omitted - where to park the thing. I imagine my floating house will eat through the boat parking meter budget, fast. I can easily imagine all those panels and, given my engineering ways, the setup will be very efficient, potentially perpetual, and as if I were at the dock. Can one ply the ICW with a cat?

This is definitely a good comparison. In my research I found cats have a tendency to pitch poll. So another reason why a catamaran sailor may want to slow down. As far as spillage newer performance cats will heel up to 20 degrees in some cases I have read. Basically to each their own, but I feel a nice boat like a Garcia 45 is more like it. They have a nice panoramic view from the saloon. You get catamaran levels of natural light, and center board for comparable draft. With the heavier blue water friendly payload and storm riding capabilities of a mono. Which makes them great for high latitudes. Plus nothing beats aluminum hulls for durability imo. Again to each their own lots of people have circumnavigated in catamarans. There is no such thing as a one size fits all boat.

There are clear advantages and disadvantages to both hull types. If I was hanging around the 40' - 50' range I would go with a cat but since I am considerably larger, I went with a mono. Though some would still go with a large cat and that is fine to. Do what is right for you.

@LadyKSailing
@LadyKSailing 3 года назад
Hey I'm not sure. I know some people make sort of shutters for their windows to use in a storm. Perhaps it's to prevent a blowout and subsequent intake of water. Also most monohulls are designed to be able to be upside down and right themselves so perhaps that plays a factor. Cats on the other hand cannot self right so the risk of windows blowing in doesn't matter. My thoughts anyway

Great video, and good points on cats and monohulls. What? No banana or orange on the couch? I've always admire cats because of their living space but probably if I had the mula, I'd buy a fifty something monohulls, instead of a 42/44 Lagoon, or Leopard. The windage issue is real, and the added maintenance is obvious. Cats are abundant in the Bahamas and the Caribbean because they are best for island hoping in a day or so, with the right weather window, and plenty room to rest docked or at anchor. Speaking of dockage, most cats have 50A plugs, which most marinas have less of, compared to 30A power connections. They are beautiful to watch, and above the waterline living space is awesome, and great for entertaining guests, marketing anchorages, and movies, but I take the monotonous monohulls any day. Having a beer on the foredeck on a beach folding chair, under a canvas tent watching the scenery is pricesless and a great stress reliever. And I only have a 33". Hope the people on the capsized cat got out okay. A lot of boat below the now waterline. Refloating her is a serious task.

I have 2 analogies for the Cat vs Mono debate. Cat vs Mono is the same argument as Motorcycle vs Car, and the only right answer to both questions is: Cat vs Mono, which is best FOR YOU. Car vs Motorcycle, which is best FOR YOU.... for your finances, for your circumstances, for your needs. They are 2 types of vehicles for the water like cars & motorcycles are two types of vehicles for roads. Cars have advantages over motorcycles, and motorcycles have advantages over cars, just like cats/monohulls. 2nd analogy, in my experience of mono sailing, a monohull is like having 5 people in a 2-man pup tent on a hill. Cats are like a condo on water.

The first boats I sailed were all cats, culminating in a Tornado. My present boat is also a cat (also with a trapeze). They are not 'all or none' as far as lean is concerned. There is a gradual transition from horizontal to someplace you don't want to be. In fact you try to get that windward hull out of the water a little and keep it just there as long as possible; actively managed lean so to speak. Even on a Gunboat 68 the same principle applies. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PKWCNz3yrxw.html You do a lot of attitude management with the traveler, daggerboards and then main sheet. The third step is to get close-hauled as possible to bring the on-beam vector (against sail and hull windage) down in a savage gust. Sort of like a yawing version of the keeled monohull's roll to dump excess force. You have to have your wits about you - that's the juice. But I've never seen anyone rounding up in a cat, and never heard of a cat broach until they changed class rules to allow spinnakers on the Tornado. The hulls are very sharp and steep so there is no slamming in chop or swells. At worst I'd slice down into a sharp swell up to the crossbeam at which point the cat would stop and back itself out with the hulls popping up like an animal backing itself out of a rabbit hole. At which point it took off again like a scalded cat, so to speak. Assuming the crew didn't swing off or get washed off the boat. I never ran a spinnaker. There was also a masthead hook on older models that caught into a grommet at the head of the sail and held it up to take pressure off the main halyard. Reefing did not exist. If things got momentarily really hairy, you'd try to get yourself cross-jibbed and sat there with the rudders set so you'd just get pushed backward to sort of keep very close-hauled without tacking. Trimarans are a completely different species however. They'll sit there and bury the lee hull down to a point and just lock in there. Then eventually the rigging snaps or they flip. I think I'd be very uncomfortable in a trimaran in heavy weather.

A while back I watched a Delos video and they were at anchor filming in the cockpit and the boat was rocking and rocking, and I thought that is no way to be at anchor which made up my mind for a Cat … and the boss says she prefers Cats… Positive for monos is that you can get easier access to marinas in some regions in Europe.

I understand that one answer to the constant high pressures on the rigging etc faced by a cat is to go with a free standing mast, which like a monohull will 'spill' the wind if it gets too be too much.

Delos has never been in the Med..the race was in Madagascar...Nosy B. I have been considering a cat for 5 years, but my opinion has changed. A single monohull is much stronger than 2 hulls attached to a platform...In extreme weather, you batten the hatches and the boat is MUCH more stable. Speed? Look at the ARC crossing records.. the cruising monohulls usually beat the cats, which is surprising because you are sailing with the Trade winds.. Comfort and price? I am looking at a 64 Jeanneau, used.. $1.1 million USD.....you don't get anywhere near the boat at this price in a cat, space , luxury, and comfort are not an issue. Cheers from new subscriber in Toronto

Why we don't see many large 40 ft plus cats in the great lakes? @SV Échappé mentioned that "dockage in the great lakes for cats are scarce" and that's a good point. But I believe that if there was a demand for wider slips, marinas would build them and charge the cat owners accordingly. It's not a money issue, certainly, there are no shortages of multi-million dollar pwr and sail vessels around here. It's not a real estate issue as most marinas that I've visited are not at capacity. The only reason that I can think of and similar to many parts of Europe is that cats just haven't caught on in this area (yet).

From the research, cats that are seaworthy to cross oceans and last long enough start off at 1-1.3 million dollars. There are so many monohauls that were built in the 70s and still can cross oceans but its hard to say a cat can last that long.

Agreed. It's no coincidence that cats are proliferating as weather forecasting gets better. Who needs seaworthiness when you can just avoid storms. bizim - Yes, they don't usually sink but that doesn't mean you'll survive inside with water surging around or out on the upturned hull. How many monos can roll more than once? Any well designed one that was made properly watertight.

@bizim_eller 3 года назад
@@theosphilusthistler712 you can sit on ( bottom or topsides) it, and wait. You don't have to stay inside, there is a good chance one of the hulls will be okay to survive. Edit: watch sailing zingaro, that guy abused the hell out of that skinny old cat and still wouldn't sink when it was broken in half🙂 You flood a monohull with a little extra water that kell will pull you down very fast🙂 Of course a good captain wouldn't allow his/ her boat get into a shitty situation anyways👍 Never let a dangerous situation become an emergency 🙂

In these comments below is the apt comparison of a car to a motorcycle. Same goes for comparing a cat to a mono. Compare a 32' cat to a 48' mono or a 42-45' cat to a 65-75' mono. You will see the attributes start to equalize very broadly. On the hardtop of the 70' Schooner Yaba you could probably get 3000-4000 watts of solar. Recently whilst working on some design parameters for a 70' LOA x 20' beam mono did come to realize it has 5 times the volumetrics of a 35' mono but with only twice the length. Comparing ratings of 64T to 13T as per a 35' mono.

I agreed with you in most but one big misconceptions !!!!!! Cats are not faster , maybe just in a few special cases against more old traditional monos. You just have to look at the data from ARC races. Most monos are faster at long legs , only the trimarans carbon fiber ( over a million dollar) won the monos . The Lagoons arrived days after many monos and with a lot on engine hours !!!!! Like you said when you have a cat you are always afraid of push a little harder. I much prefere my aluminum mono with a retractable keel . I can bit any cat cruiser, go as shallow and it is much safer . My dream boat is the Garcia , also have a high deck inside with a lot of light and ventilation like the cats. But I am happy with my Alliage , going around the world in a few years .

Other channels have stated 3 days is the sweet spot. Anything beyond that gets in the 50/50 range of accuracy. Also, commonsense plays into it. For example, if you see a large front moving in then you can estimate it's speed and be able to estimate its arrival, severity and duration.

No personal experience here, but I've seen a lot of people talking about them recently. They are apparently pretty good performers, which is something that surprised me given they appear to be designed for accomodation and comfort first, and a lot of people have said good things about them. I personally have no interest in them. I think they are visually ugly, I'm not a fan of the garage door concept where there isn't really a cockpit outside (I much prefer Seawind's way of making the cockpit and salon feel like one, but still retaining an area that is clearly "outside"), and I REALLY don't like that solid foredeck. None of the people I've heard talk about the Balis have mentioned it being an issue, but solid foredecks on cats has always resulted in increased slamming and lower performance, and I cannot imagine that Bali cats somehow manage to work under different laws of physics, lol. I feel like Bali's are certainly aimed squarely at the tropical, charter/daysailor/island hopping market, and they seem to have done an amazing job of it, but I could never buy one. Then again, daggerboards seem like a good thing to me, so I'm probably nowhere near their target customer, lol.
