Love my girl... best dog ever! Please do your research before you get one... they need a lot of exercise and will be your shadow. NOT for the faint of heart!
we adopted Misty 3 days ago from an older lady that raised her from a puppy. She is four years old and the sweetest dog I have ever seen. She assimilated to our home almost immediately. We have a four year old little boy on the Autism spectrum. Cameron tends not to be good with animals but he has taken to Misty amazingly well. They have so much in common! Misty loves bubbles, swimming, and she is a true love bug. i have never attached to a dog like I have her! The more I read the more sure I am she could be trained to be a service dog for our son very easily. She listens to commands and is just awesome! One thing I have noticed; I don't think she got a lot of activity with her prior owner and she seems to be having some pain in her hips because we are an active family. As I mentioned, she loves to swim and will launch herself a good four feet into the air when entering the pool. I am going to calm the activity down for a few days and let her adjust a bit. I would recommend this breed to anyone.
Swimming is good for them, it takes the weight off their legs, so they can exercise , now you only have to work out getting her in the pool without her jumping in the air LOL
We just rescued a Catahoula...never heard of the breed, my service dog was a black lab/greyhound, and I was a mess when her got sick, we adopted Natick the Catahoula, she gave me a purpose to train her, although stubborn, she's a best friend
we have one and we don't hunt. They just like lots of excercise - and play toys. (No play toys, no excercise = eat your house) We have 3 little kids and she is sooo good with them. They play together - it's amazing what this dog puts up with from the kids.
I have a brown Catahoula dog we picked up from a local dog pound. Somebody really screwed up! He's the best dog I've ever owned! Freckles is just superb!
Great Video! I had never heard of a Catahoula until 6 years ago when my brother found a Puppy at the local humane society. He brought him to my house to show him off, and he took to me and didn't want to leave. He's been my best friend and every day companion ever since.
I thank the chockta for the Red wolf mountain cur mix, I thank the Spaniards for the greyhound addition, and I thank the French for the addition of Blue nose pitbull and French mastiff. Made the best dog a man could ask for.🥰
Great video and history. I've had Catahoulas for the 10 years (currently have 3 females), and it's funny to hear everyone give their comments on the origin of the breed, or how I must have Catahoula mixes, since there is such a size difference between my 3. I've learned to just nod my head, and keep my mouth shut. Ironically, my one NALC registered dog is the one that is accused of being a mix most often.
I've owned rotties,dobies,shepherds, labs,boxers, Danes my Catahoula is the best of the lot. Stubborn, obstinate, intelligent, beyond loyal, loving,protective balls of iron.
If you ever missed the chance for having kids or you never wanted kids but wanted a close experience. Get a Catahoula. If you don't have the patience or just want a dog to lay around all day I strongly don't recommend you getting this breed. They're highly intelligent and mischievous. They need at least a hour of intense energy release every day or they will act out like a angry child. And in my experience they will not take to other pets like cats or rabbits. I can almost guarantee they will kill them. They can be ok at a dog park but will not tolerate being dominated. I notice they're more aggressive on a leash with other dogs. I have a male and he is very loyal and loves to cuddle. But just know the red wolf in them gives them a kind of unpredictability. So I don't recommend leaving them around small children unattended that they don't know. As wolves, they sense fear and timidness and they will at least with mine, take advantage of it if your a single person wanting a great companion, then try and adopt one. They also have a long lifespan.
Thanks for the history lesson. My girl Magic is highly energetic and playful, very loyal, intelligent and just can't get enough exercise. I really have to be on top of my game with her all the time. Got her at 7 weeks from a guy from Louisiana who told me they were called Louisiana Alligator Curs. I see now Louisiana has made them the state dog and some of the good ol boys down there who hunt with em call them Hog Curs. Looked em up here on you tube and yep. That's her. But she has beautiful coloration. Reddish brown like coffee with creamy throat and chest. I was gonna call her Cappuchino.

I have one that I got as a rescue dog. Sassy is patient but head strong. Great company and loves everyone but the birds she won't let light in the yard
My Calahoula has copper eyes, Happy ,she is different from my lab,she is very serious,but she is a working dog,and my lab is a different temperment, but I love them both.
I love my Catahoula, she such a sweet puppy. My family had another catahoula before our Shoba and we were very impressed with the breed which is why we another one

Nice video. My kid just rescued a 3 month old Catahoula/Aussie . She has one blue eye & is very leopard-spotted! So cute & intelligent! Gets along great with our other two dogs. In fact the big border collie lets her crawl on his back & head biting him with her razor sharp teeth! He is besotted with her! lol
I've had 4 catahoulas over the years (currently have a spayed female). They're wonderful dogs - great family dogs. She's very dominant with my other dogs, but great with the other animals. She actually herds my chickens.
My big little boy is a mix with a weimeraner. His mother is full blooded. Very very intelligent, protective, and an active goofball. We take him to the vet and my wife has to carry him like a 70 pound human 2 year old.
I don't a have a link but he looks very much like a German short haired pointer. Almost identical to the one in the back seat of Matthew McConauheys Lincoln commercial but solid brown rather than spotted.

I read that too but years ago I had a registered wolf / working line GSD and I just got Minnie of Cascabelle Cathoullas 6 weeka ago and ithere is something in these dogs that does remind me of my Kali. Not as strong as with her but I have had Dobies, Pitts, Roties and wprking line german shepherds all my life. I am 69 and I swear I can pick just a hint of what Kali was and she was something else. I love Minnie but I can sure see why the breeder asked about my ecperience with working dogs. These are really not a dog for jist anyone.
I have a Catahoula/Pitt-bull female that is awsome. She does a little bit of heeling when I need my horses to come in and she will run the heels off anything that is stupid enough to run away. Ovearll a very imposing dog but really cool if you know her
@sotpagrl I have had one for about 4 years now, and I have never had a better dog. I found her in the woods, and I didn't even know what kind of dog she was. I had to do some research as i had never heard of this breed. I imagine she is a mix of Catahoula and something else, but her blue leopard Merle coat and features are undoubtedly those of a Catahoula. It was no work at all to house break her, and she is very loyal and protective of her family.

i have the most beautiful two beautiful cathoula pups. Theyre purebred and the best personality. You yell there names (memphis and Rripper) and they just chase you behind following you everywere you go. its only a simple whistle and there by your side. theyre goign to be hunting dogs but a great alround kind dog.
My cousin and I rescued a Catahoula . Awesome dog. She is terrific. Intelligent and sturdy ! She got bit by a moccasin last Thursday ! Thank God for anti venom ! After one week she is back like new ! So sweet and playful . Hopefully , she does not try to play with any more mocassin's " those snakes suck , not one good attribute !
they dont really look like a mastiff or a red wolf at all they look more like a hound dog crossed with some kind of herding dog, which would match up with their temperament a bit more .
Ive been thinking of getting a Catahoula pup myself, cool dogs, I like all kinds of curs and Plott hounds too. Which color of Catahoula do you recommend for the lack health problems? Because I heard the white and merel types wth glass eyes ttend to have eye, ear,and have bad hips.

they were bred with domesticated dingos (that walked with man into the americas). the native dogs were dingos that every once in a while hooked up with a red wolf. so you are both right. i think.
Got a beautiful Australian Cattle dog from a rescue organization. When they said she had Catahoula leopard in her I said "Cata what now?" Looking at the descriptions of both dogs they have a lot of similarities, especially in the toughness part. Their talents are wasted on sheep. Give them a bull or hog to wrestle!
I love my baby pitbull! at first I thought he was mixed with a blue nose since his momma was a red nose pit! Turns out I have a Catahoula pitbull!!! :) his name is blue because of his eyes. they are very active dogs and loving aswell! best 40$ I spent in my life !
+kady valenzuela I "owe" this mix as well. I did know her father was a Catahoula. The nest was awesome as well, She herself is black with some tan on legs and head and white with black spots on chest. I think i recognise both charateristics in her. She's got the friendly disposition of pitbull's ( Her mother was actually a Am. Stafford, but for me this is the same). though she's awkward to things and situations and she deffinitly has a mind of her own from her dad. She can also be a handful but all in all, i think she is the best dog i ever had. I get a lot of positive compliments about the way she looks the athletic features of the old type pittbull( so not the massive) and the height of the catahoula. I don''y know why, but for teenagers she's a magnet( I've never had this kind of pull with the Labradors for instance..)
When I was little and walking my Blue Junior through the neighborhood, asked me if he was a Labrador (he was black). I had to ask them: what's a Labrador? Lol, I'd only had Cats all my life!
great stuff, thanks yall. i've got a catahoula (maybe a mix..) that looks alot like the left most dog at 2:41. his eyes are not glassed or blue but are brown. in anyones experience is that common?
@greggamma What is the source of your information? "Studies indicate"? What "archeological sites"? If the "studies" didn't look at the remains of the applicable prehistoric domesticated dogs from the Catahoula Lake area, then any conclusion they draw are tenuous at best. concerning those specific dogs and thus the origins of the Catahoula Leopard Dog.
Keep clicking on the videos to the right and you will see many, many brutal examples where catch dogs were used unnecessarily. Catch dogs in the majority of cases are not being used for hogs in order to save the life of the hog. Most hunts these videos show the hog ends up dead in the end, not re-located.
Thanks for this it was very interesting. They are a wonderful dog for thier purpose and I admire them very much. I do think that red wolf part is wrong but most is right. I'm very sad about the use of catch dogs and don't understand it. With dogs like these in the world, why would anyone use a catch dog? It's dangerous and stupid. The Catahoula is smart and quick and can avoid puma claws and boar tusks and immobilize the prey for the hunter to do the hunting, not the dog. That's the right
I have 4 catahoulas and i just find them so fasinating. I don,t own them they own me. 2 of them come from the greyhound line cause they have the longer thinner nose and 1 of them looks like the red wofk in color and then there is my 11month old who is most definatly the mastive line. Broad think nose and mulit colored brown white and blue merle. And oh my goodnes does he slobber.. Graet dogs will neveer own any other dogs..

I have a mutt named Hailie that I was told was an Australian Shepard mix but lately I've started to think that she's Catahoula mix. This video only furthers my suspictions. She looks a lot like one just smaller.. and her behaviour sounds more like a Catahoula than shepard. I thought bout getting a DNA test but most of them do not include Catahoula's in their DNA database.. so it would kinda defeat the purpose if that's what she prodominantly is.
All dogs were bred from wolves. And yet they are all missing certain genes found in the wolf species. Perhaps these genes are selected out for a reason? Perhaps the Native Americans repeated this process with red wolves?
these dogs are BRED to do the "Baying" they arent "catch" dogs, keeping them from doing the thing they crave and do best is seen by some as more cruel. Race horses RUN, Roosters CROW, Baseball players play BALL.....CATAHOULAS BAY!
catch dogs are a needed for CATCHING wild boar---they are also BRED for what they do.---calling it stupid just shows an ignorance for the NEED for that type of hunting. Some wildlife ranchers Catch live animals to either re-locate or to ship and sell--neither of which can be done with a DEAD animal
Can't you read? I said I'm for the bay doggging and against the catch dogging and therefore pro-Catahoula and anti-catch dog. I want bay dogs like these to do the job and am against the trend nowadays to hunt with catch dogs. Bay dogs do it right and catch dogs do it all wrong.
