The challenge in deciding is real, it is not cut and dry. Our short list included some awesome monohulls: the Oyster 565, Hallberg Rassy 50, Amel 50 & 60, & Garcia 52 because they give a much more visceral feel when sailing...but in the end as fun as it is being heeled over does get tiring and having all of your indoor living space (despite how nice they are) without being able to see outside seems silly when you are in such beautiful locations. We compromised and went with a performance-oriented catamaran because it fits our needs, but I can totally see a monohull being the better choice in higher latitudes, more crowded areas, or places that don't have the facilities for catamarans. Price, performance, comfort...pick two!
Kirk - I agree. Deciding is a challenge and as long as you're happy with your choice that's all that matters. Heck - being on any boat is success if you ask me! Kim
Very good discussion with good points made by both of you. Look forward to seeing Lin new boat. Look forward to seeing the next addition to this discussion. Hope both you & Lin are doing well. Hope the You Tube police don't have an issue with the bedroom cabin scene.
Edit opportunity, if you had some footage or stills showing the different parts you're describing. Like storage, sugar scoop, flybridge, forward cockpit etc.
@@Sailingbritican Kim, totally understand. I use DaVinci Resolve, it's pretty straightforward. But I have spent 10's of hours on a 8 second clip, so it's a time-sponge. Cheers!
For me, there is no debate. I chartered both, cat and mono hull, and to live aboard, a cat is better. The main drawback of a cat is cost and size in a marina or travel lift. Too me, one of the main advantage is the dinghy davits. Most catamaran comes with its dinghy storage solution. Most mono-hull don't, event many of the blue water ones. Why?
Have you seen our davits? I love them. But yeah...some of the mono's coming out now have dinghy storage in the aft. Many boat owners have to deflate the dinghy to get it in! What's the point? And the loss of space. I love you davits. They work brilliant and with our solar, the dinghy us under shade :) Thanks for commenting. Kim
You can't compare ft to ft. The comparison must be $ to $. A $250,000 cat to a $250,000 mono. Cats are twice the boat (2 hulls) and twice the expense. You must pay for 2 40ft slips for one 40 ft cat to fit in. It's really 2 boats. The comparison would be a 40ft mono vs a 30ft cat in reality.
