After departing on a routine flight from Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport (KJGG) on May 26th to Connecticut, Professional seaplane pilot, Antony Yen of "Straight and Level Seaplanes" was expecting a smooth flight. That was not to be, as within ten minutes after take off, the experimental light sport flying boat suffered catastrophic engine failure at only 600 feet above the ground. With dense trees all around, and only 40 seconds away from death, Mr. Yen immediately located the only potential field in gliding distance where he and his student were committing to landing.
Just 40 seconds after the engine quit producing power, Mr Yen and his student were safely on the ground with no injuries to persons or property.
When asked about the landing Mr. Yen stated “I spend a lot of time training my students for engine failures, and more importantly training them to always have a field in mind in case you lose an engine. As the landing goes it wasn’t my smoothest landing, but given the conditions it's good enough for me”. FAA inspectors later confirmed the loss of fuel pressure was due to a cracked fuel rail and the incident was not due to pilot error.
Mr Yen is an experienced seaplane pilot and flight instructor with Straight and Level Seaplanes and hails from Eustis Florida where he trains students.

Great flying. A great piece of advice that I've heard from a flight instructor: "From the moment the engine quits, the plane is owned by the insurance company". It does not matter if you damage the aircraft or not the main goal is to get on the ground safely. Very well executed.
@wyatt92563
@wyatt92563 Год назад
I like that. I also like; There’s a gentleman’s agreement between me and the engine. I pay my hard-earned money for the engine to run proficiently. Once the engine fails to keeps up its end of the agreement: the engine has defaulted on it’s agreement. My primary, and only, goal is to do whatever I need to do to get me and my passengers safely on the ground.

Apparently they crashed in an "experimental craft" aka a kit plane. WHY he had a student onboard is anyone's guess (aside from foolishness) but reports say it was already undergoing maintenance and had just taken a test flight prior. Report also mentions it was leaking fuel. So as with most crashes, it was a maintenance issue. But added on top is the instructor's WILLINGNESS to fly the plane before being 100% vetted in addition to taking up a STUDENT with them. Sounds about as dumb as the guy who flew a King Cobra into a B-17 at an airshow. An incident that was 100% avoidable but someone got a little too confident.

That landing was awful. Anyone saying otherwise has no clue what they’re talking about. The golden rule is aviate, navigate, then communicate. He was too busy messing with switches and stayed way too fast, completely over handling the controls on short final, watch him pump the sht out of the stick before touchdown. The engine was still running, just poorly. The field was huge, flat and right in front of him. He died a few months later, also killing his student. They were borrowing tools at the airport and messing with the engine before the fatal flight. A great example of the inherent dangers of flying that must be respected every single flight. Two crashes 5 months apart with very similar factors? The common factor is likely the pilot.

Seaplanes usually have significantly more drag and additional weight requiring more powerful engines (usually turbo) to produce lots of thrust. If your engine goes out at 600 feet AGL (like the description says) then you’ve only got maybe 6,000 feet (10:1 glide ratio assumption) until you hit the ground. Another thing to note is the impact speed. That plane guaranteed cannot stay airborne under 50mph with full flaps. A Boeing 737 has a VNO (stall velocity) of 340mph. That’s why airplane crashes are so dangerous because you’re touching down at hundreds of miles per hour. Most people don’t realize that. -From someone that’s been in aviation for 19 years.

It's all about inertia. Small planes have no weight. Their force can't overpower the force of the wind/drag without some opposing force to push or pull, like a propeller. The propeller isn't pushing, nor is the weight of the plane assisting very much. It's generally the pulling force done by the propeller, and as soon as that dies, your only form of navigation is to use to inertia you will gain from falling.

Trust me, that wasn't a landing. - It was an arrival - a barely controlled crash. - I fly gliders, and any self respecting glider pilot would be hugely embarrassed by that assault on terra firma. Did you notice how the pilot was wrenching fore and aft during the almost non-existant flare? His airpeed must have been all over the place, and judging by the impact, it appears he stalled it on at just below treetop height. The pilot seems to show contempt for the aircraft by his hasty and careless departure from the cockpit. - Any real pilot will check on the welfare of his passenger first, then the state of his aircraft. He didn't seem to care about the aircraft at all after it saved his skin - and never, NEVER wear flipflops while in command of an aircraft.

Nice job. Good landing. It looks like the aircraft is (bonus!) reuseable. :) Do you have a habit of prebriefing your flight, to include who is PIC, what the right seat pax can do/touch/etc., I also wonder if you pre-brief clothing. Had a cockpit fire occurred due the fuel leak would flip flops, shorts, and T-shirts have provided even minimal protection? Were you wearing synthetic fibre clothing? Just some stuff to think about. I've learned to prebrief, consider my attire (and foot gear), have a PLB handy, and be prepared for a crash. BUT, can't argue with your calm and effective return to terra firma. Kudos!

Almost you were doing serious engine out training with no idea when someone would toss your engine.. Things happen really fast, especially when you are low, and Murphy is in the mood.. Really like this video for educational purposes. Great coverage..
