Madras is lost forever.. The usage is becoming rarer & rarer year by year..Madras was renamed as chennai without realising that Madras is the actual Tamil name derived from Madarasapattinam, a Tamil fishing village which existed centuries before the entry of British. It is not an English name. Just as British named Wandiwash for vandavasi, Vizag for Vishakapatnam, Madarasapattinam became Madras. While chennai derived from Chennapa nayakudu, the local Telugu Chieftian is actually a Telugu name. The information can be widely seen in the net.
