When I was a kid, baseball was my religion. I can still remember the smell of my first glove, a dark brown Spaulding first-base mitt (I was a southpaw). I played through my teens, and then, when a bit older, I switched to softball on my company's team. Then even later, I coached and managed my sons' teams in Little League while playing softball for my church league team. I wound up being President of my local LL. It was an addiction. Watching this video, I just realized, embarking on my eighth decade, that I don't even own a baseball glove anymore. It makes me melancholy to think that I am looking at yet another facet of my life in the rearview mirror.
@@noc9472 Good question. Makes me think and reflect. lmao i play on an 8th grade team and i’m the catcher. we have a kid on our team who is 6’2, 190 lbs. he throws in the mid 80’s with his average being a 83 mph fastball but i’ve seen him get up to 86. needless to say every pitch that comes in i fear for my life. thank god he is accurate.
Every time you were about to catch a ball my instincts would take over causing my left arm to twitch and my left hand to prepare to catch a ball. Surreal feeling. Love it.
Yes, as a pitcher who played every position at one point....except catcher(in a game) it definetly goes 1.catcher 2.pitcher. by far the two most physically demanding positions and technically demanding positions. but catching is also more dependent on pitching as far as variability of difficulty. with a inconsistent pitcher catching becomes infinitely more difficult but pitching is a constant difficulty so it just makes catching even more difficult potentially. People always hate on first base but i would say 1st base is 3rd on the list for me and then 3rd base. 1st basemen are involved in every play on the field almost along with pitchers and catchers obviously involved in every play so its tough to be consistantly solid. 3rd base is just a nightmare if your playing college level or even even high school ball when you arent allowed to use wood just because the bats have so much pop but maybe not as much when i was playing around 98-2012 they may have toned it down im not sure but it used to be rough, pitching as well, comebackers. Always remember land square.
@@SkyTheLimit106 and even though most positions are told to wear cup the catcher is the only position where if you dont have a cup can not play Source: previous catcher
It is the hardest. A catcher position is different than every other player because you have to squat every inning also if your pitcher is not good you’ll end up staying out there for awhile until its 3 outs, you also have gear on that gets really hot after awhile especially in humid/hot weather, when inning is over you and your coaches have to decide whether to keep the gear on or not and if you have to take the gear off all that gear has to be put back on when your team is done batting, you have to use almost the same amount of energy a pitcher use to throw the ball back after every pitch so it’s almost like you’re playing catch with your pitcher in a whole 9 innings, you have get up from where you’re positioned to find a pop fly near you, you also have to keep a eye on runners trying to steal, also have to make sure the ball don’t get pass you if a runner is on 3rd and if you do have a passed ball you have to hustle to get the ball. Not to mention when you throw to 2nd or 3rd you have to throw from your knees for a quicker release to get the runner out. The safety issues of being a catcher.... Getting hit with a bat, baseball ricocheting, also you have to look out for the safety of the ump and batter on wild pitches thrown. Another reason why being a catcher is hard is because you have to be able to handle pain which some people can’t take.
I'm done with the show games they release one every year I don't wanna have a useless stack of mlb games from previous years that I'm never going to play again its all the same shit
I gave up baseball to pursue my career and man watching this pov from the catcher gives me memories from the best time of my life. Everyone enjoy playing catcher while you can, you'll miss it one day.
Right? I felt like suddenly I was there. I could feel my shoulder muscles twitching...wanting to throw a ball..my hands feeling stronger.. wanting to grip a bat.
I used to play catcher when I was like 9 but I kept getting worse as the other players kept getting better and one time something got on my batting gloves that made them really slippery the bat slipped out of my had 3 times and I lost the game for my team and that’s why I quit baseball
I'm pretty sure he's being a ham for the cam. It's actually rude to throw the ball that fast at the pitcher while standing up. He'd need Tommy John before he would get to the Majors if he threw like that every time.
@Oweybowy Playz stick to video games. Nobody wants a lazy catcher who lobs the ball back to the pitcher after every pitch, they're just asking to get stolen off of.
This makes me miss playing baseball for my school so much. I can feel the ball leaving the pitchers hand and flying into the catchers mitt every time. This is a great video thank you
Finx the pitchers do that bc if the ball is wet or dirty... they also do it for mental things.. if someone gets a double they wanna different ball bc that ball is bad luck and stuff
Roman Angel Gaming its also mental things too... why do u think when someone hits a double in the MLB he wants a ball change... he thinks it’s the balls fault and not his so he doesn’t want it
yeah basically all decent catchers will have a good arm (minor leagues and above). That's one of the most important traits for a catcher, along with release time, and the basics like accuracy, blocking balls, catching curve, sliders, etc.
"Can you believe this sunofabitch, throwing a two-hit shutout and shaking me off...? Charlie, here comes a deuce, and when you speak of me, speak well."
I’m still catching hardball, and added modified and fast pitch. 6’4” and wondering how many years my knees can take. 26 and working in skilled trades does not help the weekend tournaments lol
@@burtmaclin7204 i dont play in a league unfortunately, the rest of my team does but i dont want to drive 45 minutes to play every wednesday night. I just play in tourneys with them. faced the #3 pitcher in the world last year from Czech. dude was pumping 82mph from 45 ft away....
Not as good as skates on ice, rubber pucks colliding with carbon sticks. Mmm love that sound. Im a baseball player, through and through. So dont get it twisted. Lol
Loved this, thank you. I played organized ball from PeeWee league to a mens senior league, 30 Years old and up. I was a catcher most of those years, with some time at 3rd, 2nd and pitching. To me, catching is the best position out there, the best position in any sport. Some may argue, and that's ok, to each his own but this video put me right out there on the field. The sights, sound and smell of baseball, nothing like it. 👍
This was great! I was a catcher (many years ago) and practically refused to play any other position. Could easily watch a whole game from this view. Thanks for the post!
Played catcher my whole life and I always found it to be the best...you're always apart of the game and you and the pitcher work that box together...signaling pitches and showing the pitcher where you want it...I loved it, especially with a hard throwing accurate pitcher...miss those days
Imagine waking up in this body out of nowhere in the middle of an at bat and having no concept of baseball. The amount of hand eye coordination is always impressive
They’re never going to do it. Did you notice how pathetic the umpire was on just 3 outs? This would provide the evidence needed to expose the current crop of MLB umpires for the incompetent pieces of shit they really are.
I haven’t played as a catcher in nearly a decade. By far the scariest position despite the gear. Not only that but if your pitcher sucks, you’re out there for long periods of time and that gear starts making you heat up.
As a wicket keeper in cricket, you as a catcher are a brother from another mother. Watch the ball the whole way from the hand, think fast, be sharp and unfortunately those who don’t understand will probably remember you for your one error not all the amazing things you do. I love Catchers.
I always find these POV’s fascinating. You really get an understanding of the talent required to be able to see these pitches and match the speed with your bat. This is just college. Imagine the Pros!
Hey, don't feel bad. My 14 yr. old throws harder than me, 70's, hits harder than I ever hit, High 80''s exit velo with a wood bat, and plays the field better than me and I was an all star in school. And I'm not talking about now at 54, I'm talking when I played. But then again, that was in the early 80's. My excuse is they didn't have the equipment to measure all the things they measure now, at least that's what I tell myself.
Asher As a former baseball player and a baseball fan in general. I can always appreciate a video such as this! I never caught officially, but I do have great respect for this position. Great job behind the plate and a big thank you for taking the time to post your own personal footage. God bless, and best of luck to you as you continue the long recovering journey from all those injuries. I remember the same pain combined with the love for the SPORT...Stay down and pound…love it
Thanks for that... I was a catcher from 7 y.o. little league, every year through high school and Legion ball. Went Navy after that, then coached... Sure do miss PLAYING the game. Some of my best memories.
Cool stuff. Thanks for posting this and good luck with your career! Despite your injury setbacks, you are living the dream, so enjoy it! I see this was posted in 2017. I hope you're still playing.
75-80 high school. This looks like 85 to 90. A world of difference between the two I used to hit the hell out of 75 to 80 occasionally we would face somebody throwing high 80s it was like BB's coming at you.
Thank You.This was my POV 25yrs ago.I was 12yrs old with a square mask, loose body protector and a worn out catcher's glove. But still i'm proud and happy i was a catcher.thanks again from Philippines.
I am actually a softball catcher, and I love the position. Unfortunately, I live in Arizona and wearing the gear in 110 degree weather is not a good time
Aeberon bruh theyre gonna wear a chest protector no matter what it’s gonna hurt if u get pegged and what if it’s a foul tip or pitch in the dirt? Plus they got titties
I played catcher one season and my knees were never the same after. Catcher is, by far, the hardest position on the field baseball or softball. As a pitcher, anyone has my respect who can play the position all season
Wow. This brought back soooo many memories. I spent 12 years behind the plate. 32 now and can’t remember when my knees didn’t hurt. We never had knee savers back then.
@@idontknowsports8484 Lol you don't make a salary in highschool or college. You actually pay them for your uniform and such. You don't make a salary until you go into the minor leagues.
@@justasasquatchwithinternet1775 What if he was actually just correcting him so he knows next time, though? See, people need to stop being so sensitive. Criticism is not going to kill you lol
Having played as a catcher in my 'teens, I have always wanted to get back behind the plate. I can't afford the tickets to sit behind the catcher. This was so much better! the video brought back memories. Thank you so much for sharing this video, Mr. Gulick.
@@smashdemm I stand corrected. Thank you so much for the video! I am looking forward to seeing more. I caught for a pretty good pitcher. But I've never caught a 90+MPH fastball. One day, perhaps, if all things align, I could kneel down and see it up and close! Ahh....memories! Thanks again, Mr. Demme.
I played a s a catcher for 3 years back in states, after 10 years I still miss playing baseball. Watching for catcher’s view makes me miss baseball more.
Awesome vid! Woulda LOVED To have gotten to see what Jose Fernandez would have looked like from that angle! Guy was a STUD and my Favorite, Such a Loss!
Its been about 13 years since I last played catcher in a competitive game. This was so nostalgic and fun to watch. My last game ended with a lifelong shoulder injury :(
