Brother, the fact you’re still playing, no less as catcher, is plenty good! I’m 60+ and coaching Pony Ball and it’s all I can do to try to hustle and keep up with the kids.
@@glasshalffull8625 There is a catcher in our league that makes the proper backup every time...pretty sure he's 60 or so. Next time you're coaching and any kids don't hustle, tell them about Chief in 50+ DFW league who still sprints at full speed to back up EVERY appropriate time.
Getting to get the younger kids to hustle to backup plays is a challenge. I emphasize that on every play that each player should be moving. (Where they’re moving is another challenge 😬)
You do not see it much in youth travel ball, but the nice thing is when you do, it is a beautiful thing. Always makes me think I would want that kid on a team. Also shows how athletic the catcher is.
You should do a video on app based score keeping devices. Which ones you like best. Also, how coaches should take advantage of this technology at the youth level.
@@MJHBaseball Game changer etc. I run gamechanger for out team and when I pointed out to our coach how one of our kids, who was hitting 8th yet he had the highest OBP and QAB (he hit a lot of singles and drew a lot of walks). His batting average didn't pop out and was middle of the pack. He scored a lot of runs (3rd on the team and 5th for RBI) despite there not being very many strong hitters around him. The kid who was hitting 2nd had a .375 BA and a .405 OBP. The kid batting 8th had .325 BA and .510 OBA. When I started looking at these numbers I realized that this was a great way to use technology. The same applies to pitching data. Your thoughts?
I don't get notifications, so seeing comments replying to me from a long time ago I often miss. I have thought for a long time about discussing stats for youth baseball. I think a lot of coaches could use the help understanding what is useful and what is not. How to use stats to help your players work on what they need. Had one kid who almost never missed the ball when he swung, but he had poor at bats. When I showed him that he needed to be willing to swing with 2 strikes more often because at least he will hit the ball foul or someplace and his strike out rate dropped dramatically. He just wouldn't strike out. His OBP shot way up as well. He saw his numbers and that gave him confidence to not worry about 2 strike counts and became a perfect 5 or 6 hitter...the guys who put the ball in play and drive in runs even when they are put out. One day I will do this video.
@MJH - as this video is not about the umpires at all, I will bite my tongue 'til it bleeds... but I would like to know if you recall what PU and U1 are signaling as BR rounds 1B on the play starting at 1:58. I see nothing at all to signal, but they both seem excited about something; PU is pointing and U1 has his left arm out to the side as if signaling obstruction in a softball game (softball guy? I don't know any baseball guys who signal obstruction that way, though I've heard it may have been taught as an NFHS baseball mechanic at some point in the past, before my time)
PU is signaling that the runner touched 1st base. He did that in several of the full game highlight videos posted earlier, but probably only a true fan of the channel will notice it. The field umpire signals "safe" no out. His left hand goes out not as a signal, but as a reaction to him quickly moving towards second. Like if you suddenly change direction your arms will go opposite to keep balance. I could be wrong on that second one but it's my guess. As for the PU pointing every time a runner touches a base... if you're a coach and notice that, you'll clearly know when a runner doesn't touch. Lol. Just hope your guys don't miss a bag, because this guy will let everyone know apparently.
So many of the fields we play on have barely any foul territory down the lines. Maybe 8 feet from the base to the fence. Does that affect how you coach this? Certainly can't take that wide angle, and it almost feels like it's better for RF to have that responsibility with the younger 10u and below) crowd.
I still have the catchers back up like they will when on a larger field so they get into the habit. I actually included that in the video, but deleted it before uploading to keep it shorter. That being said, if it's 90 degrees and humid, then I'd tell them to stay put.
The last two clips was the right fielders back up cause angle of throw...but yes Catcher should least got halfway case it was a missed pick deflected back to dugout!
