Catching a HUGE lobster on a remote island in Orkney

If you'd spent your childhood competing with your brothers over who is the best at fishing, how would you feel if you finally got one up on them by catching an unusually big lobster?
My parents have been farming sheep on a remote Scottish island for nearly 50 years. For half that time, they've had a flock of North Ronaldsays, or Rollies, an ancient breed of seaweed-eating sheep native to the Orkney Islands. I took a sabbatical from my job as a TV news reporter to help and decided to film a documentary series about their unique lifestyle while I was there. In this episode I catch the biggest lobster I've ever seen and show it off to my family. Plus dad and I ship the wool off with a local fisherman.

You are a good man Hamish. Most people I know would have eaten that bigboy, but in all honesty I was really praying you would return it to the sea... How could one possibly enjoy taking such an old and strong survivor out of the genepool...? I wouldn't have done it any differently Real good to see that you are a caring young man... it gives one hope in humanity seeing people do good deeds... I can also see that your parents are really proud of you, as they should be. Thanks again for a truly wonderful production. Your films are such a breath of fresh air in a world of plastic and fads.

The bigger and older the Lobster? the lees flavor and tougher the meat. Besides, that old boy needed to keep on keepin' on as we say over here in the hills of NC USA. Good on you mate for letting him go.

Love visiting Auskerry! Last episode, when your Mom climbed into the sack it reminded me of a saying I heard my whole life, "They gave me the sack." Lobstering is one of our biggest industries here in Maine. The most I have eaten in one sitting was 2, unfortunately I had and equal number of Irish coffee with that dinner. Now I stick to one lobster and zero Irish coffee. Best, Kris

Absolutely the right decision. Many years ago, we’d invited my son and daughter-in-law for a pre-Christmas evening meal. Spotting the fresh mussels, Jen’s eyes filled up. Long story short, off I trotted down the street, onto the rocks and down the side of The Heugh (the breakwater in Hartlepool) where the luckiest bi-valves in history were released back into the cold North Sea. I often imagine their descendants erecting a small statue of me, in their rock pool, and giving thanks for the mercy shown that winter’s night. Perhaps, right now, a dynasty of lobsters are busy fashioning an effigy of your good self. I do hope so. Loved your video and have subscribed.

You've also guaranteed a great future for lobsters around Auskerry with this big boy to father new generations. I'd at the very least be snorkelling, if not scuba diving, around the island, you'd spot the broken shell graveyard leading to the lobster holes to see where bruisers like that live.

He was a Wowzer…I’ve never tasted lobster and yet a live a stones throw away from a fish eater delight of a restaurant. Always wanted to try it and will do before I’m much older ( 72 ) so need to do it quick. All my bucket list is complete except lobster. Drove and camped with a boyfriend around East and West Europe doing many exciting exhilarating things. Been to sunny and cold places (Tromso for northern lights) Live and let live…well done young man. You’ll catch and keep one day and no one will blame you. It’s called need to eat to survive. Today however you let an old man live. Well done you.

Oops, missed this one when it came out. Indeed - a ginormous lobster! I live in Nova Scotia, so we do know about lobster and I once joined a lobster fishing boat for a glorious day of setting and retrieving traps in the Bay of Fundy. We retrieved one lobster at least as big as this one and the crew cooked it on board and we ate some of it and then they gave me all the left overs, and I made a massive pot of chowder. The wool processing is amazing - fantabulous!

I am so surprised that the lobster was so docile. You were touching its claws, pulled it right out front ways and di all kinds of measuring and weighing. Good call returning it to the sea. I hope it stays around the island as a guardian for the next 20 years.
@hamishauskerry
@hamishauskerry 4 месяца назад
Maybe he guessed he could trust me! 😆 Seriously though the older ones are always much slower movers and don't tend to snap unless you actually put your finger in the grip of the claw. Their bodies must feel incredibly heavy and unwieldy out of the sea where the density of the water helps make them a bit more nifty. They're such amazing creatures - I just love staring at them. Thanks for watching!

Martin’s boat’s name is Alison Marie. Amazingly, my grandfather’s name was Alison, and my grandmother was Marie. They lived in the state of Indiana. All of Grandpa’s boats were named “Almarie”. What a surprise and coincidence!

Yes, I’ve never come across another male named Alison here. My grandfather is actually Alison, jr. His father was the 4th son of 4 children born to Josse Vrydagh, who immigrated to the states from Belgium in 1855. Good luck to you, Hamish, in caring for your unique and wonderful parents.

I had heard about the seaweed-eating sheep before (as a knitter and spinner), and it was so great to get a view into the life of them and your family in this series! The sheep are such colourful little dainty creatures compared to our local massive Texel sheep. A lot of the footage shows pretty great weather, but I know from working in salt marshes along the North Sea how inhospitable conditions on islands can be. And I imagine Aukerry can be pretty intense in that regard!
@hamishauskerry
@hamishauskerry 3 месяца назад
Yes you’re quite right! The weather is incredibly changeable and often dramatic here 😃 I just don’t like to get my camera wet or salt sprayed! They are lovely little sheep with lots of character - I can see why my mum has been so passionate about them all her working life. Thanks for watching - I hope you enjoy the rest of the series! ☺️
