Just to add some perspective, last week I caught a 6lb 2oz chub. An immacuate specimen, it was my first six pounder after nearly four decades of winter chub fishing on the Yorkshire rivers. Plenty of 'fours', and quite a few 'fives', but a genuine 'six' has proved elusive. Maybe my old Avon scales have been harsh over the years, but it seems that genuine six pound chub are not so common up here!

Hi Phil, firstly what a great video. Watched it before but have just watched it again ready for the chub season. I fish the wye and watching you walk across tricky ground was curious as to what footwear you use as I find a lot of footwear is not that clever with slippery banks. Please keep these videos coming that are a pleasure to watch.

Hi Allen, glad you enjoyed the video. It's nearly prime chub time again. Phil uses either a neoprene boot or when it's really cold the ske-tex field boots come out. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/wychwood-neoprene-3-4-boots?queryID=8cb1acccdd18ab57ef4dd26df460ea96&objectID=23329&indexName=live_ad_uk_products www.anglingdirect.co.uk/skee-tex-field-boots?queryID=d62e94de8f3f0f4772408670248d1c1d&objectID=30881&indexName=live_ad_uk_products

@portcullis5622
@portcullis5622 3 года назад
I finally caught a genuine six last week, after nearly four decades of winter chub fishing in Yorkshire. The lower Nidd is a good bet for five pounders and the middle reaches of the Derwent can be good too. The problem with the Ure and Ouse is catching them at the right level with all the rain and snow melt. As they are relatively big rivers with fewer features, finding the chub can be tricky on short winter days.

Phil really appreciated your comment when you caught your first 6 pounder that you said“ in my world that’s a big chub” l think many of us loses perspective on what a big fish of any species is . Despite what we see in the angling press rivers are not full of 7 & 8 pounders. Let’s keep it real.

Hi Phil, please could you advise on the main line and rod you are using?
@AnglingDirectTV
@AnglingDirectTV 10 месяцев назад
Hello Mike, The rod was an Advanta RVS twin tip. Great rods that don't break the bank either 👌. I was using the 1.75lb rod with the carrier section and the softest quiver tip. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/advanta-discovery-rvs-twin-tip-fishing-rods?queryID=2eb6ef8199be7ab3306b685452d83378&objectID=95131&indexName=live_ad_uk_products My favourite mainline for that style of chub fishing is Gardner hydro-flow in 8lb, a nice tough line but soft and supple too. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/gardner-hydro-flo?queryID=c3c2b5323b81065fa11897fd6d51167d&objectID=69321&indexName=live_ad_uk_products Hope this helps? Anyone know if quiver tips are universal or unique to a rod
@robertcourt8593
@robertcourt8593 4 года назад
Some are specific to the rod and some brands have use the same tips throughout their range. Best place to ask is your local tackle shop. They'll tell you about your rod specifically and maybe able to find something that will fit.

Can someone tell me what to expect from a chub bite. I've never caught one but I'd like to.
@portcullis5622
@portcullis5622 3 года назад
If legering, the rod tip often shows a couple of preliminary twitches, usually (but not always) followed by a good solid pull round. They are usually bold biters (compared to roach), but that doesn't stop me from missing a few 'easy' bites! Quite often, if chub are present in a swim (often close to rushes, willows or alders) you will usually get a bite within half an hour. If not, it is worth moving to a new swim. Prebaiting with mashed bread and blue cheese can help. Look for the 'crease' where fast water meets slow and when the river is high, the margins can be good if you keep quiet. I usually use a lead that is just big enough to hold bottom and often use a 5lb or 6lb hooklength to size 8 hook, with a piece of soft white bread pinched on with blue cheese. Lobworms are excellent too, but chub can be caught on virtually any bait; good luck Mr Jasoll!
