Small Stream Chub Fishing

Anglers of a certain vintage will spot my homage to some of the inspirational writers and broadcasters of my youth. A time when fishing was all about the pleasure of taking part and not the kudos of becoming a legend in one's own little world.
So I take my metaphorical hat off in the credits to Jack Hargreaves' Out of Town programme about rural life (just as it was dying out I suppose) with the music supporting the credits.
The fake (this is a modern film after all) lino cuts a la 'BB' and my much thumbed copy of 'Rough river and Small stream fishing' by David Carl Forbes who sadly died too young.
All of them contributed to my enduring love of fishing in a way that modern journalism probably can't, rooted as it is in these less innocent times.
We were truly a lucky generation. Thank you for watching.
Eric
NB: George and I would like to apologise for the inclusion of adverts at the beginning of these videos. Throughout, we have striven to avoid any form of advertising within our films, believing that angling should and could be a world beyond the reach of crude commercial interest. Unfortunately Google have changed the rules of engagement so that we can longer prevent it.
Many of Jack Hargreaves programmes can be found on RU-vid on the channel belonging to his film maker Dave Knowles
Music - I don't know anywhere near as much about classical music as I should but to the best of my sadly failing memory, this is what I used, all of it from royalty free sites readily accessible on the internet.
Memories of the Alhambra - Francisco Tarrega
The 'Moonlight' Sonata - Ludwig van Beethoven
Violin Concerto in F minor_Winter - Antonio Vivaldi
Metamorphosis - YT RF
Breathing Planet - YT RF
Pachabelly - YT RF

In the period when boats were rare and the canal was lily-fringed each side Roy? Long since gone sadly, but they are built for boats of course and the odd one helps to keep colour in the water. Thanks for dropping by.

Not only a generously informative film, but one that beautifully captures the true essence of angling. A long time ago I spent 3 intense years behind buzzers and it broke my soul. I now travel light with a rod and a few basics and enjoy my fishing so much more. Thank you for this 👏👏👏👏👏

I can believe it Kevin. We both love variety in our angling and, for me certainly, three or four trips doing the same are enough. This week, float & bread on canal, alarms & pellet on a lake and then floating biscuits, you can't beat it. Thanks for your comment

The attention to watercraft is what really stands out here. Too often modern angling media focuses on the tackle and branded bait. It's finding the right place to fish that undoubtedly increases your chances more than anything else of catching your intended quarry. More, please!
@artificialflight1942
@artificialflight1942 4 года назад
Interesting point Joe. Thank you for your observations. The films are all about the fish and the challenges of their pursuit, not the need to use a certain rod, hook or pellet.

David Carl Forbes was my father-in- law and one of the finest small water anglers I’ve ever fished with. He would be amazed at the size of the Chub we now catch on the Hants Avon, Test and Dorset stour. Incidentally, he would love the way your videos are presented.

@@artificialflight1942 My fishing buddy Pete bumped into his sister in Rugby a couple of years ago and I was with him when we bumped into them again. She had none of her brother's books, so Pete gave her his copy of Rough river and small stream fishing, for which she was very grateful. I believe she too has now sadly passed. DCF's memory is still alive and respected amongst all anglers of a certain age. Thank you for your kind comments and I echo George's thoughts. eric

I’ve watched this a couple of times now and thoroughly enjoyed the quality and content. Your style gets me reminiscing about Jack Hargreaves, Terry Thomas and a Passion for Angling with Chris Yates and Bob James. I’ve recently simplified my own approach to fishing and gone back to the days when craft meant more than barrow loads of equipment. By the way, a big hello to George who I believe was a classmate at secondary school in Rugby.

Great atmospheric video and music, took me back to fishing every night after school and before being blinded by Match fishing and Carp fishing sitting behind 3 rods and buzzers. Now I am back to fishing the Beck of my youth trotting a stick float and using a pin. @artificialflight1942 4 года назад
Hi Neil, No it's very much a different world, angling in 2020, to the what the audience that we hope like our meagre offerings might want to pursue. We get pretty much everything online and 80% of it is just basic tackle. You really don't have to spend £150+ on a rod if you don't have the means, or the desire. It's an old 1.25t.c. Avon/Quiver. Loads on the market at sensible prices still and you'll get something perfectly usable for well under £100 I'm sure. Thanks for the message!

"with the fish in the net it'll be time to move on". Because no one ever caught multiple chub in one swim 🙄.. Also for the record I think most people would not consider that river to be a "small stream" small river yes, but not a small stream.
@artificialflight1942
@artificialflight1942 4 года назад
Interesting points you make BW! Firstly, we find when roving on local rivers and streams (which have low fish populations) it's best to take a fish, feed the swim and then return later to have a greater chance of more fish. There are very few swims were even 2 chub can be taken in quick succession especially when the water is clear as per the swim where the comment you refer to is made. Also, some of the swims featured are wide and/or deep holes whereas a few yards away you could jump across and it's just a few inches deep. We expressed both river & stream in the opening titles. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thoroughly enjoyed all your videos, bread, worms, spam will catch fish, as shown watercraft is the key. I fish a small river for chub and it holds a few barbel would you still use the same tactics and use meat or would it be better to use stronger rod and lead clip etc.
@artificialflight1942
@artificialflight1942 3 года назад
Depends how big the barbel are Matt An important thing to consider is that the quicker you can get the barbel out the better as they fight so hard it can take them time to recover, especially in hot weather so a rod of a least 1.75lbs t.c. is advisable and, yes, a lead clip is wise not least because you can quickly change lead/feeder really quickly if you need to. You can certainly follow the same plan though and just put a few samples in a few swims and give each one 20 minutes. You'll need a much longer hook link for barbel though, 1m is ideal. Thanks again for you comments

@@artificialflight1942 I have fished the Cherwell for 30 years, which is a classic small chub river. Small river as opposed to small chub that is. It also used to have pockets of good sized barbel but in all those 30 years, and many hundreds of chub , I only ever caught one barbel whilst targeting chub. What is strange though is that I also caught a lot of very good Cherwell barbel when I specifically fished for them. I have always found that a bit hard to understand.

@artificialflight1942 4 года назад
Sad tale John. If you've read Tony Miles books you'll know the R Leam produced 5's decades ago too. Quite a few of the scenes are of wider sections of generally much narrower rivers. In fact, looking back, I guess that's a bit misleading as you could jump over them in other places.

@artificialflight1942
@artificialflight1942 3 года назад
Hi Sean, If you stick to the simple rule to use bread if it's a bit coloured or clear, and lobworms if it's very coloured you won't go too far wrong. To judge the colour a rough guide is to roll up a 1p sized bit of bread so that it sinks and if you can still see it 20cm down into the water it's a bread day and if not it's a worm day. On worm days its often best to cut a whole worm in half and hook the cut ends, then hold them on the hook with a red rubber maggot. Cut worms are usually more successful than whole ones. I hope that helps!

Catch and release! Fish are cheap enough to buy in the markets! Our rivers need protecting, we have imported craw fish, minks all distroying our fisheries! We dont need to add to the problem! Also you should have a fishing license, if you dont you are committing an offences. this goes to anyone reading this....Fed up going to the fishing banks, seeing crap left, tins of sweetcorn, meet, beer cans..thrown away gear package etc etc........ive always defended pepople who fish (me being one of them) my claim is that fisherman are naturist, we clean the crap up we see on the banks, take care of the fish,..but not everyones the same. Irrespective of culture people should respect the local customs and fishing laws, if not stay at home! simple! There should be a ban on taking any fish from the rivers!! And those caught given a substancial fine!! Theres no need to do it. Yes u know this pisses me off!!!!!!! Its not about education, people know the laws, but people dont give a shit...
