Catching Big Fish on a Tenkara Rod and Making a Big Mistake which cost me my rod

I fished a small river for the first time and ended up catching some big chub on a tenkara rod. The fish increased in size with each one that i hooked until eventually the rod snapped, mainly due to my inexperience and poor technique at handling large fish. This channel was created to document my journey into leaning to fish with the Tenkara method, and I’m still very much a beginner. Please feel free to leave and tips, advice & Criticisms in the comments section below. Every day’s a school day and hopefully not just myself can learn from these experiences and your collective advice.

I've done that too, use the grip area of the rod .... ONLY the grip area.. your other hand if needed grab BELOW your casting hand not above it, let the fish run himself out more before you net him, not TOO much so he's tuckered and won't release well (if you're eating your fish, you can play them to death and learn a LOT about safe netting) you're doing GREAT, I'm stuck catching all these rainbow and cutthroat trout over here in Montana.....

Thanks Rob, that’s great advice, just what I’m looking for. It’s why I make these video so people can help me when I get it all wrong. We learn from our mistake but also other can hopefully learn along also, but with out paying the price. (Snapped rod). I feel I learn something new every time a go fishing, which is great. But it really helps when people far more experienced than myself can lend their knowledge to the leaning pool also, not only for myself but for others that might find themselves in a similar situation. So thank you for your input . It’s much appreciated 👍🏻👍🏻 I wish I had your problem, being stuck in Montana with rainbows and Brookies 😂

@@tenkarafanatic have you seen our cutthroat trout ?

@tenkarafanatic 2 года назад
@@robaldridge6505 yes but not in person. They look cool. You have so many trout species in the states compared to here in the U.K. we just have rainbow and the native brown trout.

Zero problem breaking a Tenkara Rod, you can get sections for your Tenkara easy, open the back and slide back into place. Tenkara rods are very strong well pulled on by a big fish, but they are made to BEND only, any side on/edge pressure, will break them, especially the tip section. Holding the rod sideways for a big fish is good technique, but NOT if your touching the rod above the handle section, keep your hands close to your body so your core can assist, with your extra hand Below your handle gripping hand. Let the rod do all the work, allow the fish to tire itself out before pulling to the net. Get onto the manufacturer of your rod for a replacement sections, when I buy my Tenkaras, I always buy an additional tip sectioning, in case I break it accidentally. Lovely video and good luck.

Thanks. I got the whole rod replace at a much discounted price by the seller. It’s my favourite rod by far. Thanks for the great advice. I will take that on board next time a hook into something big.

Absolutely! I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I had so much fun I wasn’t even that bothered about breaking the rod. I think I’m going to go back for another go tomorrow hopefully as I can only fish with fly on this stretch of the river between 1 of April and 15th of June, so running out of time. With any luck I won’t break any more rods 🤣.

I have a similar Tenakara rod from ESO and tested it out for the first time in Spain the other day. There didn't seem to be any trout around but I spotted a similar size chub to the one that broke your rod. I was tempted to go for it but glad a resisted now!

To be honest it was more my bad technique that broke the rod than the rod than the rod itself . I think with more carful handling and a little more patience I could have landed the fish. The rod is excellent and my favourite rod to fish with by far at the moment. But it’s fair to say it’s not a big fish rod. enjoy the fishing in Spain 👍🏻

Man! That rod snap was split second and total devastation. I'm new to Tenkara and so far have only caught perch and one bass that snapped my line and stole my hook before I could land him 😢. I'm still hoping for the big-ish one but not at the cost of my rod. I need to find some creeks around here.

Just don’t do what I did and hold the rod by the second or third section just fight it holding the handle. It was my fault the rod snapped. 😇

It is a pity. Which brand is the tenkara rod got snipped?
@tenkarafanatic
@tenkarafanatic 2 года назад
It’s a British company. The rod is the ESOTERIC TACKLE STROOAN 2 It got really good reviews from Jason Klass and a few others. I think it was not really designed for the size of fish I caught. The fact that I’ve never caught a fish of this size before and I think my rod handling was all wrong which was the cause or the break, we learn by our mistakes . It was an expensive lesson to learn.

Wow don't usually see tenkara rods being broken like that... Sorry to see that..
@tenkarafanatic

It was pretty much my own fault. We learn from our mistakes. Looking forward to catch more next month when I’m allowed to fish that section of river again

I usually go one size down from the maximum tippet size. Ex. If the max tippet size is 4x use 5x. I have also read this from a few of the more popular Tenkara fisherman on RU-vid and the net. I would rather have a fish break off then the rod break.

Sound advice! I generally use 5x or lighter I have only used heavier when I have been targeting big fish with a rod I know can handle it. I have two big fish rods. The Tenkara Rod Co Rocky and the Gamakatsu multiplex suimu ex 500 which is a great rod. As I said. I’m pretty sure the rod snapped because I was miss hanging it. The fact that I managed to catch two fish of a similar similar size and land them is a testament to how good this rod is. The third fish just put up a much harder fight and I didn’t know what I was doing 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@tenkarafanatic I haven’t caught anything yet that is that big. Mostly, for me, its fishing small creeks in the mountains of Virginia for wild trout (small)
@tenkarafanatic
@tenkarafanatic 2 года назад
@@blueridgeflyguy9551 apart from stocked rainbow trout in one section of my local brook that’s all I tend to fish for also. I wanted to fish this river as it’s part of my fishing association waters, but it’s a Coarse Fishing river. I’m allowed to fish it using flies between certain dates and only for a small section of the river. so wanted to try something different. I have till the 15th of June to give it another go Which I definitely intend to do. Fishing is a little different here in the U.K. somebody owns the rights to all inland waterways be it the government or private individuals or fishing associations. Either way you have to pay who ever owns the rights. It can get very expensive for roaming fisherman. I’ll be fishing in Thailand next month so keep an eye open for that. That should be interesting 🤔

is that british carp ??
@tenkarafanatic
@tenkarafanatic 2 года назад
Chub are part of the carp family yes but I think we also have common carp and other non native carp species, much the same as in the state I guess From wiki Chub Squalius cephalus, is a European species of freshwater fish in the carp family Cyprinidae. It frequents both slow and moderate rivers, as well as canals and still waters of various kinds. This species is referred to as the common chub, European chub, or simply chub
