Catching Big King Salmon And Giant Halibut While Fishing In Alaska

Day 2 fishing on Cook Inlet out of Kenai Alaska we found some even bigger King Salmon and some giant Halibut as well! Those big halibut can be really dangerous once you get them into the boat and they're incredibly strong, so harpooning them is often necessary in order to safely and securely land these fish. In this video the couple we were fishing with caught 2 gigantic Halibut, the first of which took nearly 30 minutes to land. It was a real battle! I also got a huge upgrade on my King Salmon from the day before which was an awesome catch especially since we were fishing very early in the Salmon season.
Unfortunately, I was not able to get a 3rd video on the 3rd day when we floated the river for Salmon so this is the last video from Alaska. It was a bit too early in the season so the Kings hadn't really moved into the rivers to spawn yet. That being said, I don't regret spending that day on the river because the scenery and experience was incredible and unlike anything else I've ever done.
In total between these two days on the ocean my Dad and I ended up with over 80lbs of salmon and halibut filets which we were able to fly home with. Needless to say our freezers are well stocked and we will be eating like kings for a long time to come! I really hope you all enjoyed coming along with me on this trip, I'm glad I was able to document it in this format. It'll hopefully be a great memory for my Dad and I down the road! Thank you all so much for your support and for watching, I will see you back in Charleston in my next video and remember to make time for fishing!

My dad was in the USAF and did 2 tours in Alaska. I was born there before it was the 49th state . and grew up there on my father's 2nd tour. I got my love of fishing from my father and can not think of a better place for an outdoors enthusiast to grow up. Thanks for the memorizes!

I can't imagine a more beautiful place to grow up either, and the wildlife was unbelievable. Sounds like a very nice place to live! Thanks for watching!

Awesome video and great fish! Thank you for sharing! In my opinion Chris is one of the best captains on the Kenai peninsula. We are very fortunate to fish with him every summer. Your video brings back memories. In fact, while I type this I am enjoying a delicious salad with grilled halibut caught on his boat ;)

“Lucky I’m a good shot”. He harpooned and gaffed those halibut right in the prime meat. In all the years I’ve been commercial fishing we get a lower price if you don’t get the fish in the head with the gaff.

With a harpoon, you go for the thick of the fish. A gut shot can pull out and the head shot is often hard to get it all the way through. Maybe have to trim a silver dollar from around the hole. For commercial fishing it's any excuse to short you, but the end user is paying the same price

Just goes to show the complete lack of experience dealing with medium size Alaskan Halibut.. BDO much easier to shoot them and get them onboard with a gaff

Monster halibut. How does it feel going back inshore fishing after an experience like this?

That fish was a beast for sure! And the fishing we did in Alaska was totally different but I do love my Charleston fishing! I do miss not sweating to death the whole time I'm fishing, though...

I assume you keep the down-rigger cable deployed while fighting a fish on in the hope of a double hookup with a second rod? Ever lost one due to the cable being deployed while fighting one yet?
@MakeTimeForFishing
@MakeTimeForFishing 3 года назад
We did keep it deployed yep. And we weren't fortunate enough to double up while we were on this trip

@@MakeTimeForFishing I've loss many of fish that way is why I ask. Line hits the cable, tangles and gone.
