Very informative. I have been crabbing in the Puget Sound now for over twenty years, and even picked up a few tips in your video. Excellent.

Very strict Crab regulations in Washington State compared to British Columbia ,Crabbing is open year round in BC and no soft shell regulations, though not many would keep them anyways

Yes, this is true but with all the pressure from tribal, commercial & sport they do get harvested even with those strict regulations.

Hi, I enjoyed your show here! Here in Colorado wishing I was there fishing and crabing. I have 16' Lund skiff and wondering if that would be adequate for an individual in those waters, with careful watch on the weather forecast. Also when are the best times for a combo fish and crab season? More interested in crab, flounder/halibut and ling. Thanks..

Hi Cobia! There is a lot of fishing opportunity that can be had on Puget Sound with a 16' Lund though you do have to pick your weather. Our seasons are very divided up here by species. Ling is open May 1st to June 15. Flounder is open then but Summer crabbing does not open until July when salmon season is usually open. The sport halibut fishing is very limited here, only a few days per year and the best fishing is on the ocean not in our protected inland waters.

@@seattlefishing4240 Was looking into Port Susan Camp Club, for an inexpensive fish camp 'if you will', for a few months out of the year. It just looked like a great area because of the somewhat protected waters. I also looked into SE AK, the ferry looks to be a little pricey, but not out of the question either? Just sittin' here dreamin.. Thanks for the reply!

A lot of fishing can be done on the inner Puget Sound out of a 16' Lund, with as you say a careful eye on the weather. There is a Summer crab season in July and August and usually a Winter season in Nov. and Dec. Flounder are plentiful May thru Sept. Halibut is extremely limited to just a few days a year.

Hey there, love the video! Very informative for a relative newbie like me. Just had a few questions pertaining to the new recreational crabbing season here in Puget Sound that started a few days ago. We went crabbing on two different occasions: July 4th to Kayak Point (area 8-2) , and July 6th to Magnolia (area 10), and both times did not catch very many keepers after spending the whole day out with multiple pulls. We used both chicken quarters and salmon carcasses as bait and dropped at 90-120 ft on relatively flat land. I don't know if we did something wrong, or maybe the waters near the city have been too overfished by the commercial guys, or maybe we were just plain unlucky? Any insight and tips you could give to us? Thanks a lot! (Also subbed)

The MA(Marine Area) you crabbed in are not known for a lot of Dungeness crab, 90-120' is a bit too deep as most Dungeness crab are caught in 30-80' in the sound. Chicken is not my choice of bait I use hardshell clams(horse-butter) fresh Salmon heads and Roe and squid. I crab mostly in area #9 and the Hood Canal. Hope these tips pay off on you're next crabbing trip

Hi Kuabara182, crabbing can be hit or miss. Raw chicken and salmon carcasses are excellent bait. Waters 30 to 120 is a fine depth in Puget Sound. Commercial crabbers sometimes go out to 200 feet and deeper. The question is were you catching plenty of Dungeness but little to no keepers? If so you were in the right area. Offen commercial seasons open before sports seasons. If you are catching lots of Dungeness but no keepers it is because they have been taken. If you are not catching crab or mostly rock crab you are in the wrong area, bottom type or depth in that area. I have my favorite spots but some years they do not produce well and sometimes very well. If they were good today they should be good tomorrow if not I move. I often prospect spreading 4 pots out over a large area, if one produces well I will move the other 3 in. If not I will move far until I find what I am looking for. This is over a period of several days. Remember bottom type is important. Dungeness like sand and mud not hard or rocky. An area that has lots of rock crab does not generally have lots of Dungeness and vice versa.

@@seattlefishing4240 Can you give me any advice on how to build my own traps like what you have? For example, what dimensions did you use? What guage wire? Is it a special wire used for the box of the trap? Where did you get it?
