Catching GIANT Striped Bass In a NEW Lake!

Come along as Matt and Tim chase big striper! They're exploring new water in search of these big predatory fish and it doesn't take long to find them! The guys start out with swimbaits and A-rigs but quickly realize the fish have gone deep. A quick switch to a spoon is all it takes to get the big ones biting!
The key tonight was finding lures that could be fished effectively in deep water. Tim put time into the A-Rig (A proven producer for big striped bass) but the combination of deep water (30-45 feet) and strong current was too much for the rig. A heavy spoon (1 3/4 oz) in bold colors proved to be the best option. Even in the current we were able to hop the spoons as we back drifted. We had a very short bite window before the river currents slowed but we connected with two beautiful Striper before it was over.
We've done quite a few videos on spoon for bass and striper in the past. Matt typically leans toward a jigging spoon while Tim prefers a flutter spoon. Both styles are a must-have in an angler's arsenal and worth learning how to fish effectively. If you've missed our previous videos on the subject you can see them here...
Fall Spoon Fishing: • How To Catch More Bass...
Flutter Spoons: • Flutter Spoon Tricks Y...
Jigging Spoons: • Fall Bass Fishing: How...
Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment the guys were using this evening. We've even included a link to the NET they SHOULD HAVE brought with them to land these big fish with ease. All of the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each.
The spoons...
Bait- Blade Runner 1 3/4 oz DUH Spoon: bit.ly/2aKVLlG
Colors: UV Fried Chicken, UV Citrus
Hook- Owner ST-56 Size 2: bit.ly/2cVg7xW
Swivel- Sampo Welded Ring Black Size 4: bit.ly/3kflHd2
The A-Rig...
Rig- G Funk Baits Cali Rig: bit.ly/2nD76fw
Heads- Matt Allen Swimbait Head (1/8 and 1/2 oz): bit.ly/29RrTYN
Baits- Keitech 4.8" Fat Swing Impact (Electric Shad): bit.ly/2ab7s8v
Dummy Baits- Keitech 3.3" Fat Swing Impact (Electric Shad): bit.ly/2ab7s8v
The Net...
Frabill Knotless Conservation Net 9522: bit.ly/33vYRaq
Matt's Exact Spoon Combo...
Rod- Poison Adrena 7'4" Heavy: bit.ly/3diigiT
Reel- Shimano Metanium MGL 150 B HG: bit.ly/34HlAAk
Line- Power Pro Maxcuatro 50 lb Braid: bit.ly/2clBRiQ
Leader- Maxima Ultragreen 20 lb Mono: bit.ly/2ae97J9
Alternative Line- Sunline Assassin 20 lb Fluorocarbon**: bit.ly/2h4LNjm
** Note: If this was a dedicated spoon rod Matt said he would remove the braid/leader and fish this rig with 20 lb Sunline Assassin Fluorocarbon. He feels the Fluoro is a better option for deep spooning around finicky fish but the braid is a better line for fishing a variety of baits with this rod.
"Bang For The Buck" Spoon Combo...
Rod- Shimano Expride 7'2" Medium heavy: bit.ly/2nTq9FL
Reel- Shimano Curado 200K: bit.ly/2tHewEh
Line- Sunline Assassin 20 lb Fluorocarbon: bit.ly/2h4LNjm
Budget Spoon Combo...
Rod- Shimano Intenza 7'4" Heavy: bit.ly/2QADLTq
Reel- Daiwa CA 80 High Speed: bit.ly/3hprTgv
Line- Sunline Assassin 20 lb Fluorocarbon: bit.ly/2h4LNjm

Quite simple....They are real, tournament and world record level fishermen. They use what they know works and explain in detail little variations and changes to teach you to catch fish. They don’t bank fish (well very rarely) they don’t act like idiots or tools for the camera, they don’t do 500 videos of walmart fishing gear and dicks sporting goods etc. They dont jump on the bandwagon with some of these youtube sponsors like mystery tackle box and the such and try to see how many people they can trick into subscribing to mtb to get a bunch of clearance lures and colors they won’t use, etc. plain and simple, they are for serious anglers. The guy thats looking up what to buy for his 1st baitcaster and how to fish from a creek, is gonna click off their video as soon as they find out these guys use $600 setups and $25 lures. It’s actually good thing though. You don’t want every dipshit out there, to know how to find fish in rising water on a highland reservoir do you? Im glad they have what they have. Most kids and beginners can’t understand what tim and matt are talking about, they dont know advanced techniques and dont have the attention span or intelligence to learn. So it’s a very good thing. I take real pride in going to a public, heavily fished lake; being able to read the water, weather, and conditions, catching 5lbers where 2 guys just left after 2 hours of catching nothing and making the people around me scratch their heads. Then when they ask me what Im using or how I caught it, I will go into a drawn out explanation about how “this time of year they are keyed in on shad...theres a baitfish spawn if you pay attention you can see all that popping and surface disturbance. I found a hole back there where it drops from 4ft to 8ft and I took a goat swimbait head with a keitech easy shiner and bounced it off that drop off. Etc etc etc”. They just stare at you with glazed over eyes have no idea what you are saying. I’ve tried to explain to people they are reeling too fast, you can’t just cast and reel, you have to make the bait erratic, You are using way too stiff a rod for that bait, you shouldnt be throwing braid on a crankbait, etc. thats why im catching and you aren’t--they still usually just stare at me with glazed eyes. What im getting at, is be glad you understand fishing on this level. You understand the baits they are using, rod actions, all that. Let the noobs have their monster mikes and googan squads; we can outfish them every time and make them look stupid.
@legionssb

Blue_Dragon Hobbies lol. I don’t intentionally try to make them feel bad, i seriously tell them how im catching them and try to put them on them. Ive even given them jigs and lures to throw like mine and watched them and told them how to retreive what to feel for etc.....and every time as soon as i drive off or paddle off, i look back and they are chuckin and windin again. Like I literally just spent 20 mins giving them a crash course on my pattern so they can have a good day, and they still wanna do it their way even though its taken me years to figure this shit out. So oh well, fine. They can keep watchin their googans and suck. i’ll keep watching tactical bassin and mikey ballz and jt kenney, and aaron martens.

You guys should have fished Boone Lake near Bristol for stripers in it's hayday back in the 90's. Lake record was 59lb and one guy, I think Bob Peterson caught 13 over 50lb. Schools of hybrids would come up feeding and it would look like a 2 acre jacuzzi. We hooked stripers that would spool 200yds of 20lb line, so big you couldn't stop them.

Amazing that you got those two giants in the boat. I thought they were going to pop off for sure. No fun when you leave the net, but we've all done it at least twice. 😊Great video guys. Be thoughtful of your striper population. Here in the Chesapeake bay area the DNR says water temp is a big deal when it comes to striper recovery after being caught. After studies another big factor is air temp. Anything over 90 degrees and fish mortality goes up by a factor of 10. The conclusion was in freshwater and high air temps, mortality rates rise to an unbelievable 67% at just 88 degrees.
