Catching Grouper and Redfish Inshore Using Big Threadfins

In this video, I went fishing at a local bridge and caught some big live baits (threadfin herring aka greenbacks) with a cast net. The goal was to catch the big snook and tarpon that hangout around the bridge pilings on the moving tide, but instead I found inshore gag grouper. Unfortunately, gag grouper season is currently closed around the Tampa Bay area and doesn't open until June 1st. Afterwards, I used the threadfins as cut bait while targeting redfish along mangrove shorelines at high tide.

Anyone else not seeing the thumbs up turn blue when you hit it? It's been doing it to me for the last 2 days. It still says "added to likes" but it doesn't change color or add to the like count! What gives? Nice video as ALWAYS amigo! I Respect the fact you didn't take all the bait you caught! When the "bait gods" smile upon thee, it is prudent to return some of thy bounty to sea for others. Nice side catch. I fished that bridge Tues for flounder after Salty Fins video came out. Neither I or the other 40 people there caught anything. Its one of my go to spots but success usually depends on the tide. Oh well, it happens. See you out there

Hey man, thanks for helping me so much lately with all the tips. I’m just trying to become the best fisherman I can be. With that being said, could you give me some pointers on catching snook. I’ve watched your snook vids and in destin on the panhandle where I live there aren’t any mangroves (which I see you catch most of yours at) any tips to find them or baits I should use? My goal for 2020 is to catch one. Thanks!!

I've heard it's pretty tough catching snook in the Panhandle region, but I've heard of people catching them off of jetties or by bridge/dock pilings. Live shrimp is always a good option or you could use shrimp lures or swimbaits

Phantom Fishing not that I’m by any means an expert but knowing where you stand the best odds is key also. Snook are migratory and move from the deep creeks and rivers in the fall/winter into the flats during spring then on the passes and beaches during the summer to spawn. Shrimp are always good option or flarehawks.

I use the gotcha to catch fast moving fish like mackerel, jacks, and ladyfish. All you do is cast it out and reel it back fast while popping your rod so the lure darts side to side

I saw in your description your net is 8' and 1/4" mesh. I've got a 6' and 3/8" mesh net today and am looking to upsize, potentially up to 10', and was debating mesh size. My concern w/ 1/4" is sink rate but it looked like you nailed those fish just fine. If you had it to do over again, would you stay with what you got or would you go bigger (on net or mesh size)? Just curious. Also, do you know your lbs/foot of lead line? Thanks and great video. BTW, myy buddy texted me on Wednesday that he got a 27" gag right around Clearwater pass in a 20' hole. I was surprised they're in there w/ the water warming up, but they obviously are.

I would definitely stay with the same mesh size because 95% of the time I'm throwing it in less than 6 feet of water and I still want to get those smaller greenbacks without gillling them. I have both an 8' and 10' net, but I find myself reaching for the 8' more often. It's 1.65lbs per foot
