Kevin from Modern Self Reliance helps me build an improved rabbit box trap using materials we salvage. For a few pine boards, a hinge, some screen and some weights to help the door drop and a simple piece of wire, this trap is pretty effective! My Gear (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedb...
Kevin's Channel: / @modernselfreliance
We use some apples and other kitchen scraps to trap rabbits and even the attention of other critters like raccoon and squirrel. I also use a lot of trail cameras to help make the trap more effective.
I will show you how to build a homemade rabbit box trap with simple materials. This is a super easy DIY rabbit trap. I will also show you how to bait the trap and show you how rabbits react to the traps so you can learn how to trap rabbits easier.

Just saw this video. My grandfather taught me how to make a rabbit trap similar to this when I was growing up. He called it a rabbit gum and I have not saw a single person who does The you tube who has made one the correct way. I 100 0/0 guarantee that I can make one that will catch rabbit but I'm not a tech kind of guy. This one is as close to my paps as amy I've saw yet.

@annwachter5985 3 года назад
My german grandfather would grab the rabbit by the hind legs and rap the rabbit behind the neck with a sturdy cane. Their neck is very fragile and death is quick. He would prepare the rabbit and have it soaking in a salt brine within 15minutes. The next day it would be made into a stew with veggies and gravey that only my grandmother new how to make from memory.
@4kays160
@4kays160 3 года назад
Karate chop to the neck, they die instantly, now he cant demonstrate the kill or the cleaning though, that would get him flagged and demonetised by youtube.. not his fault, fake sjw would claim its animal cruelty for the purpose of profit and youtube is run by them, so there wont be any killing episodes, even cleaning would be risky tbh..

Probably drilling holes on the side of the trap might spread the scent of all the goodies inside and help you see inside the trap
@williambenner5550
@williambenner5550 3 года назад
More wire mesh on the sides. I am a old trap builder, and that is what I would do. You want the prey to able to see out as well. Makes them less nervous.
@patrickpeterson11
@patrickpeterson11 3 года назад
@@williambenner5550 Agree. Most traps are made from wire mesh. But if you watched other videos of this channel where Chris has used wire mesh traps, the smaller animals were able to steal the bait without getting trapped and the snowfall would cause issues. Plus Chris has already built a wooden trap in this video.
@annwachter5985
@annwachter5985 3 года назад
Use an outside trigger attached to the piece of wire that goes inside that has an apple hooked onto it. My grandfather used screendoor springs attached to the door and a trigger attached to the stick you have on the door. ONE piece of apple bait equals rabbit stew for supper. You don't need windows for the rabbit to peek at the treat. Too much bait information makes the rabbit nervous and he will seek food elseware. Cottontails by nature like dark holes to seek shelter and safety. Try comparing a no peek solid wood box to a all wire mesh box.

The box trap is what we made as kids. We called them "rabbit gums" ( An old term. I don't know where the phrase came from). Instead of the dado we used 1/2 square "sticks" for the drop door guides { 2 each side }. A slice of apple was a good bait. Also rubbing a cut apple all over it covered human scent and enhanced the bait. You don't want to eat rabbit until after the first hard frost so they will be free of micro parasites. In warm weather use them as stew meat to sterilize them well. a small hole in the end board will let in light so they can see the bait.

On new traps. You have to let them sit and do what we call soaking. Others might call it something else. Anyways what this does is it lets all oder from humans and new material remove itself from the trap and replace itself with the natural smells and orders from the woods. I'm from Florida and when setting any kind of fish, crab or any other kind of water trap we call it soaking. Not sure what it's called for forest traps. But either way you get the idea. We made new rabbit traps and it has to set for several weeks in the woods sometimes to get all un-natural orders from the trap. Hope you get this comment and hopefully it will help you on your traps. Good luck.

A much simpler and effective trap uses the " L" shape top of the trap. 2 nails for the hinge. Used a modified deadfall design for the trigger. Beagle clubs here in Maine made them to catch snowshoe hare to train pups. My drawings are older than you guys; don't know how to forward them. Would make a good upgrade video.

For a window may I suggest this, from an amateur woodworker perspective: 1 cut a rectangle in the side, whichever way you want or find easiest. 2 use a circular saw, raise the blade all the way clear, align it to where you want then make a plunge cut in the thickness of the side with the window. 3 use any transparent plexiglass (it yellows out in a few years) cut to the dimmensions that match the dimmensions of the window PLUS all the way to the top of the side wall. 4 secure in place with a screw or if you don't want too much metal, 1/4 inch drill through the whole thing and use a wooden dowel. Lexan doesn't chip when cut, unlike plexi which sometimes shatters. I got some small lexan panel cut-offs kicking around I can send you in an envelope if you want. Speaking of which, you should get a PO Box so ppl can send you stuff. Lures, knives, that kind of thing.
