In this video I show how to catch the hook or ball while operating a crane. The crane used is a Tadano 180G-5. I have had several questions regarding this topic. So, I decided to make a video showing how to catch the hook.

The best way to maintain control is to never lose control. I see a lot of ops trying to operate faster then they can handle. Speed comes with time. Great video.

Good explanation, I work in marine construction with crawler cranes on barges. Imagine doing that with 200' of boom while the barge is listing with the swells. Kudos to all the operators who keep us safe with their amazing control in adverse conditions!

Appreciate the short video...keeping it simple. Ive failed the practical for crawler multiple times due to not controlling the load. I re-take the test this Friday and this gave me confidence in what I need to do! Thank you

Awesome bud. Another thing people should know and pay attention to is the centrifugal forces induced when swinging. To catch the load completely you’ll need to adjust the boom and swing accordingly. Thanks for posting. IUOE local 12 SoCal baby

The not-so-simple physics of simple pendula. The angle from the vertical at any given point in time is a direct function of the maximum angle from the vertical at the end of each swing, so reduce the maximum angle as close as possible to zero by moving the tip of the boom over the load when it is at or near the end of one swing. Yeah, yeah - easier said than done. Great video, Jimmy!

Been running gantry shop cranes and, yeah the swang is tha thang. Being able to stabilize the load is the difference between an experienced operator and a green one.

Good short-video on the topic, i teach/instruct on a school with excavators and wheel-loaders and when asked what do you do if your load gets swinging i often get the answer: "just put it down on the ground"🤔 and then we have to try to demonstrate the right way of controlling a load. Keep up the good work👍

EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! I operated overhead crane in a railroad back-shop, (up in the cage), for many years. I'm retired now for a bunch of years, but I've become to telling of my experience, in various things. STOPPING A SWING was one of my videos. I teach the theory of how a SWING lives and then the multiple ways it lives, from swing to jitterbugging and how to kill them, using a plumb-bob. You demonstrated how to kill a swing, very well. Thank you.

Its interesting seeing the mechanics on a crane. The swing period is a lot longer, so it seems a bit more forgiving provided it isnt compound, lateral and back and forth. First learned load catching moving steel plates with excavator. Sure, there might be a tag or a guy with a mag stick, but a 3K lb plate is significantly more than any mere human could control. Hoping to get a crane cert in the next 6 months to join in the fun! Thanks for the video!

Also when you’re hooking down while it’s swinging actually transfers the energy downwards and gives you more time to catch it ,

Great video. I have a harder time catching the ball when it's going in and out, I find booming up to be easier than booming down
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 4 года назад
Towards and away is much more difficult. I too, have found that booming up is easier. I think cranes inherently boom up faster. That or the timing is easier to match because of the load moving towards the cab. Many thanks for watching! 🙂
@HughieGT
@HughieGT 4 года назад
Yeah and add a little cable down to that boom up, it’ll also help. The old timers used to let the ball free fall and in the process it would turn that side to side motion to down. Instantly catching everything and making you look like shinny penny. 😉
