Great interview. I love his perspective on Grand Seiko and overall Japanese philosophy and culture. I enjoy learning about models I never knew existed. Down to earth collection!
Nice interview, Derek and Ricky! Nice to see the passion and knowledge. I don't have any leads on a Seiko Astronomical Observatory Chronometer - normally, I would ask you, Ricky! I was visiting with Derek at Carat & Co. the other day and saw the King Seiko SJE083, and it's fantastic. Beautiful subtle dial, authentic retro design, and superb finishing! It really evokes the look of the watches of the 60's.
Thanks for watching it! I believe this is why Ricky & I went over our 10 minute “mark” and just let the conversation flow because we were having so much fun!
I remember my dad and my uncles all wearing Seiko 5s or Seiko Quartz in the 70s and 80s here in Australia, . It was a way the average person could wear a high quality watch without the Swiss price tag. I have retained and treasure my father's Seiko 5 (early 70s) and Seiko Quartz ('81) and means Seiko will always have a soft spot for me. Great legacy of what they made available to the average person.
100%! Everyone told me I should buy a PRX but I see that watch everywhere and I am so glad I bought a 4502-7000 instead. It costed me more than my rent but I just love it and this podcast video helped me to not feel bad about my decision even more haha
6:40 - I am happy to report that the gold medallions of the 2 King Seikos 4502-7001s that I bought are perfectly aligned with the serial numbers. Thank you!
I was considering buying a dateless King Seiko but when I found out the 45-7000 has an instant date change I opted out to get one with the date function. There is just something so satisfying hearing the click around midnight haha
So much to learn about watches in and out. I make it my duty to learn about all complications not only the watches I keep, also one doesn't have to spend lots of money to get a good collections going, a collection that can bring many years of happiness.
The King and Grand Seiko's powered by the 4500 series manual wind Hi-Beat movements are the absolute pinnacle. They crapped all over most of what the swiss were producing! They were the F1 of watch movements!
I also started out with liking the date/day window esp since my first watch was the skx007, now I recently got the SARX095 and its so clean and simple. My friend who isn't into watches didn't get why I would pay more for less things on a watch lol he said he would want a busy looking dial with crazy hands. I find that usual the longer you get into a hobby, the more you start to like simplicity.
Japanese watch company are very mean. Most of their watches are using mineral glass crystal. Ain’t my Japanese watch crystal was scratched, I lost interest buying Japanese watches. A synthetic sapphire crystal costs only under $100.
The only Shikoku worth having is the king seiko......because all the other seiko watches are just rubbish poorly made movements stamped out by machines......Swiss watches are by far the best! By the way I,m a watchmaker and know!
