As Ascension and Father Mike Schmitz begin their Catechism in a Year podcast, questions have arisen: what editions can I use, which editions can’t I use, why can (or can’t) I use a particular edition, why are there so many editions, how can I include more people, how can I join a discussion group? I don’t have all the answers, but I do have quite a few. Let’s dive in and see how we can unite our parishes (and Franciscan fraternities) as we study the Catechism of the Catholic Church (whatever that looks like for your group).

Best way it was explained to me is there are major catechisms (Council of Trent and the CCC 2nd Edition (dark green or dark blue covers) and minor catechisms (Baltimore, YouCat, etc). Since the major catechisms were originally written for clergy (specifically bishops) it was permitted for the bishops to then produce minor catechisms for age specific audiences. And the Foundations of Faith just refers to Ascension's approach to how they organized their edition. It's the major catechism blue cover edition's text with special color coding, charts, timelines, extra appendices, etc.

I like the expressions “major” and “minor” although it’s more accurately “universal” and “local”. Universal versus local makes it sound like they are different, but it’s really just making the language of the doctrines of the Church appropriate & more accessible for different ages or places. In example, you probably wouldn’t want a children’s Catechism to deal with sexual sin & certain expressions can mean different things in different places (in example, various expressions used by Australian, British, and Americans-all speak English, but have local nuances).

If you go to the website under Catechism in a year there’s a FAQ section which tells you which catechism is suitable and includes pictures of the covers and a small chart comparing them.
@DeannaWillistonOFS
@DeannaWillistonOFS Год назад
Yes, the chart tells you which editions are best suited for reading along, word for word with the same paragraph notation. But the wording and graphics of other editions may also bring something to the table. Here’s the link (the chart is very far down & you need to click on the FAQ “.What catechism editions are suitable for reading along with the podcast?” ascensionpress.com/pages/catechisminayear. The next FAQ lists editions that Ascension feels are not suitable for the podcast. I agree that those editions are not laid out in the same format, which would make reading along with the podcast difficult, but they could deepen your understanding of a particular passage.

I am attempting Bible iIn A Year and Catechism In A Year with Father Mike. Going into Day 70. I find that it helps me focus if I have the books to read along. I purchased the Great Adventure Bible, and then was unsure I would do well with Catechism. So I did not purchase the Ascension version, but a smaller White hardcover from 2003 for less $ from Amazon. He refers to the paragraph# and that works well. I know the USCCB website works too, but I really prefer having a book. The Nicene Creed was the prior version so that required some "editing" on my part. There are a very few other changes. I am happy I purchased this version.

Great! Thanks for sharing. I have the white one upstairs. I think it’s the edition between the crème colored first edition and the dark green 😆.

So my main question is why we need it does it not equate to more of and indoctrination plus they never say who wrote what my wife is starting 365 with fr Schmidt I listened with her Schmidt and Cavens didn't get much from it seemed like two intellectuals and a mutual adoration society

Catechism in a Year uses the Catechism promulgated by Pope John Paul II (the dark green one in my video, currently published with a dark blue cover; the Ascension edition is this catechism with a built in study guide that follows CIY).

Why do we need a Catechism? See #5 from the USCCB (my take: it’s an official document with the universal teachings of the Catholic Church; individuals and parishes within the Catholic Church have the same teachings): “5. What is the purpose of the Catechism? The Catechism serves several important functions: It conveys the essential and fundamental content of Catholic faith and morals in a complete and summary way. It is a point of reference for national and diocesan catechisms. It is a positive, objective and declarative exposition of Catholic doctrine. It is intended to assist those who have the duty to catechize, namely promoters and teachers of catechesis.” www.usccb.org/committees/subcommittee-catechism/faq-about-catechism#tab--_-what-is-the-purpose-of-the-catechism

She gives absolutely no information on any of the different catechisms of the Roman Catholic Church even though she could have provided historical context for each one from just a cursory review of each catechism on Wikipedia. This entire video is just a confusing jumble of unrelated factoids without any structure whatsoever. She seems to make little distinction between the official catechism of the Catholic Church, published in 1992, older catechisms of the Catholic Church, ie. Catechism of the Council of Trent(1566 A.D.), and the many popularizations of the catechism. The only concrete piece of information I learned was that she doesn't like page numbers on the bottom center of the page; it triggers her, or something. A video on this subject should be informative, not irritating.

Fair enough. Wikipedia does a great job of giving lots of information. The purpose of book reviews on this channel is to let people see inside the books so they can see if the features and content will be helpful for them. Page numbers being at the bottom center of a page usually indicate a book that is meant to be read sequentially and is unhelpful in reference books. (I actually like this feature in fiction books, text books, other books that should be read sequentially only.)
