I'm like some other commenters. I would want to see this at a tractor pull, pulling in the unlimited class. With the weight, traction, torque, and horsepower I can see it being very impressive.
It may be a heavy weight and have a relatively high torque output but it's only 450hp. It couldn't pull the scraper attachment with just the tractor engine, it needs the extra 500hp 6cylinder fitted to the scraper. It's doubtful whether this tractor would do very well in a pull.
@@Draxindustries1 Agreed. I've ran one. They are for hauling heavy loads and higher speeds, but could no even load themselves. And any hills you would be downshifting like mad. Big, but not that powerful.
@@Draxindustries1 Pulling a load that has already been loaded, I don't think would be much problem. Where the problem comes in is loading the carrier. Depending on the texture of the dirt, even the pusher engine is not enough, in most cases. Thus they have the pusher dozers, or they hook 2 scrapers together to help load each other. The force it takes to pull the weight of a tractor pull sled is nothing, compared to the force and traction it takes for the blade to cut into and load the compacted dirt. Traction is the main thing scrapers don't have enough of to load by themselves. This tractor probably weighs half again as much as most pulling sleds and at least twice as much as the pulling tractors. I believe it would have enough traction and could pull the max loaded sled out of the arena and head home with it, albeit not as fast as the high horsepower, highly modified pulling tractors, which are lucky to get a full pull. Of course, I could be wrong. My thinking is based only on a life of observation of heavy equipment working, not on much actual operation, on my part.
@@michaelthebarbarian3380 it would never win you don't know how much money is invested in a motor like that for a pull ...if so belive me it would not be the only one left in country that could use this truck and every pull truck would use the motor.. but like they said it's the last one ...this is not turbo you don't bring a snail to a race
When I was a younger man, back in the early seventies, I drove a 631 from Kingsport TN to Nashville, over 300 miles. We had a convoy of two scrapers and two escort trucks. We took I-81 to I-40. I don't think we would get too far doing that now.
@Larry VanDyke, that was a long old tramp,I have taken my old 631b out 10 miles that was plenty far enough!,lol, they don’t ride like the 6wheelers,lol.Over hear you can’t move much big gear now without a lowboy.👍
This is so cool! Reminds me of the V660 Cat Forklift I once drove and worked on. Weighed in at 94,550 pounds and was 14ft 8in tall! I had to pull the trans and repair the step down box housing. Felt like a king driving that thing around!
Amazing! I worked for Ohio Machinery for 42 years and never saw one. The engine was only used in this application as far as I know.. very rare machine!
This was the first time a couple of years ago that I ever knew that Cat made a scrapper like this. I thought that the scrappers was always built in one unit rather than a tractor unit and scrapper. The 666 looks amazing after the refurbishment and you lot must have put some very hard and long hours into it :D
Thanks for your kind words and yes it did take a fair effort getting all restored. Yes Cat started with the DW series of scrapers which were triple axle varieties and they were then superseded by the 600 series. They don't make any triple axle scrapers anymore, but having the "tractor" separate from the box as opposed as being all in one made them more stable at high speeds and uneven ground. Cheers
Having never seen anything like this before, my first thought watching this was it looked like a 2:1 or 3:1 scale version of a tractor I'd expect to be the same size as a Ferguson 35. :)
As an engineer in US Army I drove CAT 911 with 24 yard Westinghouse pan scraper. 140,000 pounds at 35 mph was thrilling and I still remember 40 years ago.
When I was a kid I'd play on those when they'd park them for the weekend at the highway construction sites .The grease monkeys spent the weekends servicing and repairing them and chasing us away from them .After the second year they tolorated us and they let us watch and help change motor oil (handed them filters and refill lines ) we got as dirty as the monkeys , they'd let us stand where they could see us and cycle all the systems on each machine to work out air in hydraulic cylinders the ground shook as they were opened and closed ,, at ten years old we were impressed...
@@adhdrebel982 Great story ,Thankyou ,that was a great childhood and as a kid they would have seemed Monsterous!,as they still big today as an adult,I can remember seeing the 631’s when my brother and me used to go to work with dad in his lorry and they were like dianasours!👍
I have to echo Aallistairc123: What a brute! Yet a nimble brute, when compared to other such machines. Cat knew how to make great heavy equipment. Thanks for posting this video, for the big brute motoring grandly and proudly through the British countryside as well as the lovely country. I hope that they rebuild it for public view and enjoyment.
I operated 1 for 12 months at a Cooper Mine open pit in AZ and I had a Good scraper they call it a double barrel one engine in front and one in back V8 IN FRONT AND and a six-cylinder in the back boy were they funded to operate and and loaded you can pull out of the pit at about 15 or 20 miles an hour add a hell of a lot faster going back down at 81year old I would love to get on one two day they were so smooth and fun jk
@James Keene ,yes they are a great old machine ,we got the double barrel one also,if ever you on holidays over here in the uk you would be welcome to fire the old girl up.👍
A guy named Gavin has a 770hp D11N pushing a 660B.John Deere has never made a machine the size of a 666 unless its the current 850D LC exvacator.Enjoyed the ride!
Show de máquina, uma bela relíquia. Infelizmente aqui no Brasil o povo Nutella não valoriza essas excelentes máquinas que foram de fato o progresso... parabéns pelo vídeo.
Great video and quality. I love it! It's too bad that the bowl / box got scrapped. It seems to run very well. I'm glad you have the means and ability to have saved this one and move it over there. Of the millions of videos on RU-vid, this is the only one that I could find of an operating 666 (even if it is only half of one), and it has to come from one that isn't even in the states anymore! Man, she's a fat, but beautiful pig! Take good care of her.
To bad they couldn't show it in action. Dirt work/excavation is the job I enjoy more than anything else. One company I worked for had the Terex 14 scrapers. We called them double barrels because they had two engines, one in front and one in back. Those things would go almost anywhere.
@ketd9 Haven't got any pics on my laptop of the dashboard, but when I get chance I will take some. It has 2 hold positions on the transmission. A brief history of the machine:-New in 1968,and spent most of its working life (late 90's) on the East coast of the states building route 95,from Maine to Florida. In it's life its had several major component overhauls.
@espeescotty Thanks for your great comments, much appreciated. Your right it would be great to see some more 666 footage,at the end of the day it was the biggest scraper ever produced by cat!!
Hopefully in the next week or so we should have a new video up of it fully restored. Managed to source the rear scraper box for it so now it really is a behemoth!
If one like this were mine, I would smile often, until I had to do any serious repair on it. Then I would suffer through it, and probably smile again, later.
I'm super surprised at it's agility. I feel like they finished the thing...... And someone finally said...., "Uh how about a seat?". America needs one. Call it the, "protestor 9000"
John Deere made a small one like that it only had a 2 cylinder diesel ,they cut the pan loose and hooked the tractor part to a sled and had no problem pulling it in 14k lb class with construction tire treads on rear for full pull ..
@glenn3rd2004 Unfortunately the box had been cut up for scrap, but the sheer size at 16 foot wide would make it very difficult to get back to the UK. If one ever came up on the East side of the US (easier to ship from the east to the UK) then it could be a possibility later on down the line,so keep your eyes peeled!! You are right thou it would be an amazing sight to see,I have never seen one in real life myself!
@allistairc123 With the scraper box attached which also has a rear engine of its own the top speed when fully loaded (over 100 ton) is 42mph!! Not sure how quick the tractor unit is on its own,but i'm sure it must be around the 40mph mark, well that is according to the guy behind trying to keep up!
That's one bad ass looking tractor! Born and raised in upstate NY and surrounded by rock quarries and out of the thousands of pieces of equipment I've seen and run over the years I've never come across one of these Cats! Wonder if it's something more popular in other parts of the country here? 🤔 I've traveled out as far as the Mississippi River in the Bread basket of the US plains and don't ever recall seeing those out there either, mainly all farm equipment there. What was your need to have such a great piece of equipment like this? I mean it's a stupid question I guess? I'm just curious about what they main purposes were if you or anyone here would happen to know off hand? It's like they took a standard farm tractor and gave it a shot of some serious steroids lmao! But she definitely moves pretty quickly on the highways for transporting them to sites! I know Europe has some narrow roads so it really must be impressive looking to see such a bohemith coming down a small town road......! Lol. She sounds great, I know it's an old post but I hope she's still running well for you over there. Let me know if anyone happens to know what their main functions were from Cat? Thanks.
@Jim Clancio,hi thanks for your comment great to hear from you,yes it was a while ago but still have her all painted up now ,and have her Big Sister!,it is the front tractor from the Cat 666 motor scraper ,so she would pull a 54yrd box/pan with a rear engine on it,there would not be that many left in the States now ,Cat stopped making them many years ago.If you check out our other vids on the tube you will see her sister all complete !.Cheers👍
From oldest CAT everything are fucking good 👍 👏 👌 a bigger and stronger engine V8 all most 1000hp! 💪 it's a hilarious heavy equipment 🤔👏👌👍 cheers from Norway 🇳🇴
