I think a lot of people forget that some of us do things like this for fun and a challenge.... Added bonus for Marty ( and us ) is that he can earn a crust from the video ... of him and his mates having fun = ) As for the price... that`s entirely up to the owner and the eventual buyer.
@JohnSmith-ud9ex Yes thats true but after a while you do get sick of people taking advantage of your skills and generosity especially in cases like this where they turn around and sell the thing for big money they would have had no hope of getting if it weren't for the skills and generosity of others ( if I sound jaded its because I have been used in this way meany meany times over the last 40 years). I hope Marty here at least got some RU-vid money from the vid especially since he went to the effort of making it for us to watch for free.
I`m in my 50`s... so jaded is a natural state. Thankfully I am, at last, learning not to waste energy on an insurmountable foe ( human nature in its natural state 99% of the time for 99% of people ). My comment was trying to be upbeat and appreciative of Marty. Besides, Marty`s comments on his second video regarding the state of the machine casts considerable doubt on the asking price and the owner has yet to find a buyer.... But you are right... unfortunately.@@-TheRealChris
For a dozer that has been sitting for a few years and with water in one of the pots , the old girl isn’t chuffing out any soot when it’s loaded up . Just a good old honest Cat
fun fact, nz is very flat and boring, just a gigantic stage set for movie making.all the hills and mountains are papier mache. us kiwis work nights moving them around for tourists selfies.
Glad you guys were able to give him a hand. That driveway was washed out pretty bad. Probably best he keep ahold of it, since it's on the side of a hill and just a matter of time before it washes out again.
Thanks for keeping us updated Marty! Seriously these little clips are so nice, knowing you have pretty much zero obligation to make/post them but still keeping the fans in the loop! Really appreciate getting to watch you do this great work!
This brings back memories of my pre-teen and teenage years watching a dozer being used to dig dams on the farms I grew up on. I am nearly 70 now and this is fantastic. Beautiful sound. As they say, "Work fascinates me; I can sit and watch it for hours".
I luv the way all the crew came together to help the owner get his much needed dozer back up & running 👍🏽. Whoever was running the dozer made a great job of the road & for a tiered machine it done the job with ease. Thanks for the upload Marty, God bless you & your family (inc doggie, angry ram etc) not forgetting the crew 👍🏽🙏😁
The world has become small ... very small ... me here in Amsterdam watching you guys doing your thing in scenic New Zealand ... special, very special ... thanks Marty!
OMG : I've waited my entire life to see and hear a tale first hand of the proverbial "spanner in the works". Spanners are elusive in the USA, although we have an abundance of monkey wrenches! 😂
For anybody considering buying this old Cat I wouldn't be concerned about the cylinder walls or ring seal, it fired up on all 4 from cold & didn't have one hanging or smoking & runs clean when up to temp. Marty's quick fix is basically the same way I fix these old track adjusters as well. I just do a clamp on style with a piece of pipe slit down the middle to go over the ram rod. These old D4's bring 6 to 10k any day of the week here in the US.
Exactly what I was thinking, it's the ideal machine for anybody like Marty with a bit of land, It wouldn't take long to earn your money back compared to hiring a machine in with trucking costs and a guy to run it if it's not self drive hire. Then when it pukes beyond economic repair weigh it in if scraps worth anything on an island like NZ, or part it out for what you can get out of it. I did the same thing here in Canada with my backhoe loader, I paid about 8K for it by the time I fixed it, earned all the money back the first year over hire costs, still own it, and might not use it for a year or do 5 things in a week with it. I've got a guy offered 10K for it, as it's the same machine he grew up running for his dad in the 80's. But I've got the same type of history to family ones in the UK like he does, so it's not for sale anyway.
it starts so good for a machine with that kind of hrs and water being in the cylinders for who knows how long glad to see another machine is up and running and not going to the scrap yard
Well, Marty being a good mate he helped out a fellow New Zeelander and hot that Cat back to work. Several more days work and the owner will have a nice inproved road leading down to his property. Then sell or do improvements to the property itself. Definitely was a joy watching the old Cat working.
Interesting comments about "hope youre getting paid" for resurrecting the machine.. a lot of the time down here, people do this for the love, cost of materials only (if that in some cases), just helping someone else out.. as for what its worth to sell? well, its worth what someone will pay ;) looks like a solid rig (performs well it seems) tho, some good bones. love your (guys) work, MartyT! 👌
I just love the videos of you taking something in this condition and tuning it up, cleaning and servicing. I’m amazed at how many times you have shown that something that was “ broken” was just dirty/rusty/low on fluids.
I for sure thought you guys were just helping out. Didn't even cross my mind that commenters would consider anyone other than the owner retaining it. As for the price, it seems high.
I thought about $10k NZD. Second hand gear sells for a lot in NZ, it's costly to bring new gear into NZ. I remember seeing a new CAT for $50k USD a few years back... Prob a lot more now.
I thought you guys did a remarkable job getting it going. Well done, I really enjoyed watching it come to life. You all worked so hard. Hugh. Somerset UK
I thought originally this dozer may be heading home with you Marty. 😁 As for the footage of it in action, I thought you did an excellent job showing us the dozer in action in the first video. It is always a treat to see what Marty brings back from the dead! Keep up the great work Marty!
I'd consider it a pretty low act if I helped someone fix something for free and they then turned round and sold it for big money like that, hopefully it was all sorted out up front beforehand and I hope you at least made some revenue from the RU-vid video. You brought it to us all to watch and enjoy for free and I for one really appreciate that, thank you.
yeah that was my point. The owner must have thought they won the lottery! It was a hunk of scrap after it threw a track. Didn’t even bother to cap the exhaust. Would have cost more to transport it to a scrap yard than it was worth. They knew no commercial company would get it running by tinkering with the engine like these guys did. Really if the machine develops a new fault you’d hope the owner would call marty back and say you can have it this time! 🤞🏻
I’ll bet he was thrilled to get that going again. His wife probably told him he had to put it up for sale, so he picked a price that wouldn’t hurt if it did sell. ;-)
I agree it was a GREAT save, mainly because of the precarious position it was in. Personally, I think the TD9 save was the epic one, due to locale, & duration of time in the bush. To me, it doesn't matter that no one of the group buys/keeps it, it was an excellent chance for the guys to get out & see if they could do it; and with this group there wasn't a doubt in my mind. GOOD on all of you for helping out the owner! No different than helping neighbors in my eyes.
Running a 6-B at a DuPont plant pushing mud and the tracks were LOOSE! I told them it was going to sling one if they didn't do something. They said to run oit. Undercarriage was shot and slak adjusters were all the way out. It slung BOTH tracks and the winch on the 6 and several pther pieces pulled it back out. Welded 2 inch blocks in front of the slack adjusters to tighten the tracks back up. Had to break both tracks apart and weld the links together. The master pin was shot. GOOD JOB, Lads! CHEERS!
He should be splitting the money evenly between the people who fixed it and keeping none for himself, he got his driveway done, they did all the work that he couldn't do.
@@-TheRealChris I don't see a problem with it. Here in NZ a lot of places such as here are well off the beaten track, so everyone helps each other. Marty will get his payback, don't you worry. Instant rewards are not always a thing here.
It may be fine for pushing a bit of dirt around on a flat piece of land, also where you could get to it if it tosses a track or blows a hose. To make it reliable enough to make do in the bush it is going to take quite a bit of work. Even if it was gifted to you with an understanding that you would take care of the maintenance as long as the original owner could call on it a few times a year, it would be a bit of a burden. You would end up spending thousands and more than a few weeks of wrenching and cursing over broken knuckles. Already having your own you were a good mate to help someone else out.
It seems to be a strong runner, even though the track system is quite worn. I don't think I was able to see whether or not the winch works properly. Another piece of equipment that has been resurrected from the scrapyard. Way to go Marty. Your son should be about ready to join you on these adventures. ✌️🦊👍
Thank you for the up date on the D4d , 10k is a bit stiff considering it's condition, a undercarriage will cost half that ,at least it's usable for now
@darrinrebagliati5365 indeed. However, I was partly asleep while watching the video. 👀 It is nice to see Kiwi's helping each other. Marty still gets content for RU-vid and doesn't have to worry about the wife! "Is that another vehicle!?!"
Great job resurrecting the old cat. Dad ran them most of his life. Great memories. That operator has a few hours under his belt running them too. Great job.
When watching your videos I’m always reminded of where I grew up which was in western Oregon and Washington. Especially along the Pacific coast, the terrain is very similar although the vegetation is somewhat different than NZ.
Machine looks like it’s got some life left in it. Better to see it running at all than to be left to crumble into scale. Several of the drone shots of the dozer show the actual slope on the land really well.
She's a worker! If the owner's got the tasks for her to do, it'd be in his interest to get all the over-due maintenance done to her. If not, he ought to let her go minus the maintenance price via, a couple itemized estimates. Great job Marty and comp!
What you guys did was amazing. Isn't it funny how the owner reacted when that dozer was on the side of the hill - he was happy to just know it was there & do nothing. You come a long with a few mates get it going. Now he wants 10k for it. (has he been drinking?). Should he get any amount of money that he should split (I think it was 4 of you + him) 5 ways.
10K for a 500hr track life and low tension in one track, sounds like a money pit no thanks 😂 But seriously, that owner should pay you guys, for the time and effort. It took to put that BEAST back together again.
She would be a fine maching for a remote property to do road reapir a few hours a year. Tracks dont really matter if she if used ocasionally like you do Marty. Sweet old dozer. A person can keep a eye out for a second machine and build one decent dozer. Motor is running and not lacking power so keep running it.
Looks like it was an old logging dozer with that winch it would be very handy for the right person bit if TLC be a good machine Thanks for the videos mate 💯👍 Best thing ever was work it bet the owner appreciated you guys leveling what he couldn’t and doing his roadwork
