I love how enthusiastic your presentation is. You could sell Cat machines and out sell the competition.

I ran one similar to this ole gal in 74. Fiberglass cab with modifications for a roll gage over it. People that worked there before me said it was a 64. I don't know but the controls were on the left like this one. Center pin and steering shake would kill you at times but I was young and loved it. Very little brakes as the front expander tubes were plugged. Couple nickels would stop the leak and keep on loading coal!!! No muffler but I loved it. Most of the time my foot was flat on the floor never to use the declutch but used only the brake and gear lever to neutral. Best ole coal loading machine in the pit. Just keep the engine wide open and she'd do the job.!!

I learned to operate loader on, my first loader, one almost exactly like this one. The first time in the seat was almost overwhelming. lol

There is still places in pa that use these, also a transfer station in Nazareth, PA that has 3 or 4 of them. Running.

the first eight years of my life, we lived in a house woned by a guy who had a cat 944a. one of those older loaders withsteering on the hind wheels. i got tons of memories from that machine as i used to get a ride on it. was wondering if you had any video of one?

Cat got an awful lot right on these machines. They put a lot of 54B and 120B shovels out of business loading railroad cars from stockpiles etc. here in Minnesota.

Good video again. it's a real testament to their original design from 40+ years ago that the new machines still look much the same. Btw is the vintage PA mining channel still around? Can't seem to find it + would love to see more of that material. Happy Christmas + looking forward to more great videos from you!

The design of the pivot seemed different from many Cat loaders in the 70's; and inside the cab, the gauge and electrical box positioning to the side instead of under the steering wheel was interesting as well. Was the transmission in this loader manual? The shifting pattern seemed to parallel Cat bulldozers of the era too.

some of the 988a's were powered by the 1693 cat diesel motor also.

@canvids1 Yes, Mixermobile Manufactures was probably the first to experiment with loader articulation beginning in 1953.

nice walk around Justin wonder who had the first Articulated steering? I know LeTourneau had them, I worked them! They were not hydraulic at the time but! Any idea Justin?

Note the size of the planetary wheel drive's newer machine's are not as big as the first generations.

There was a 988b for sale near me a while back he didn't want much for it I remember it being less than 10 k

These were a mean sounding piece of equipment when working.The low profile rear fenders pivited on the front mount to allow the tires more room to cock up and down on uneven high an low places and had rubber pads on the rear edge of the fender to rest on.....the cats had a master key switch,if you didnt have the key to turn the power on,you didnt start anything.....
