"Going" to the show with an expert commentator is maybe even better than being there in person without the input from someone so knowledgeable, but I'd still love to see this first hand. That is one nice D2, clean and elegant. Thanks for letting us tag along. Hopefully, there are more examples in this mini series.
Pretty cool old D2! I guess of the D2's vs. IH, it would be like finding the late Case SC's before they switched to the number series. They made at least 4 different engine blocks for the SC's... Lots of 'running production changes' done to those tractors.
Thanks for the walk around of the 5J. Your knowledge of these machines is amazing. I plan to be at Nowthen on the Saturday of the weekend too, so hopefully our paths will cross at some point during the show. 🇺🇲🚜👍
There's nothing like listening to an expert, whatever the topic, and it's hard to imagine there's someone else in the US who knows more about old Cats than Squatch.
The dozer blade is nice and close to the tractor......much more controllable and effective. The "modern" dozers could use that same tech to improve their performance.
Curious about the hydraulic pumps. If they are using the front mounted (model 44?) for pump, tank and distribution to the hydraulic cylinders... what are the hoses on the rear mounted pump going to? Great commentary Toby!!
I was more interested in the big caterpillar that was right next to that tractor I see that you did a little tease because I seen that rounded bumper that you're trying to make
If there is a new front mounted hydraulic pump for running the blade, then what was the original rear pump being use for? Also 113 still has some holes in the dash panel where things like this ones temperature gauge mount. Those holes 🕳️ are going to become really obvious (🐁doors!) once you get the new wooden cab mounted on 113. 🤔
Ok, I have two questions. One is stupid and one is really stupid. Question 1: Why do Cat owners put toy John Deere tractors in their air cleaners? Question 2: On a D2, with electric start on the pony motor, would it be possible to use the starter to spin over the starting engine (with the fuel off) and engage the pony to the diesel engine to start it? Like I said, I know it's a really stupid question, but I can't help but wonder if it would work
Well let's say the electric starter is doing maybe 200 rpm Then you start the pony motor and once running it'll do 1000rpm then it'll spin the main engine just fast enough to start it Those numbers are totally made up but the starter doesn't spin as fast as the pony motor running so the electric starter wouldn't be able to achieve the rpm to start the main
It would barely spin it cause the electric start for the pony motor used 6v. The did have electric start for the diesel but required 24v. The pony motor also did the job of what glow plugs and block heaters that didn't really exist back then.
Ok… what’s the deal with carrier rollers. I have an early 5j (1938) with carrier rollers. My cat “Operator’s Instructions” book has a photo showing a D2 with no carrier roller (page 31)
Good, old fashioned rivalry between the CAT crowd and the John Deere folks. Air cleaners keep crap out of your engine... ergo, the JD is "crap" being kept out.
